NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is favored to win a third term, but the victory is predicted to be far smaller than the blowout he pulled off in 2005.
Public opinion surveys find Bloomberg with a much narrower lead over Democrat William Thompson Jr. this year than the lead he held over his Democratic opponent in his last re-election bid, when he steamrolled Fernando Ferrer by nearly 20 points.
This time around, the billionaire mayor has spent more money, but Tuesday's election is shaping up to be a closer race.
Analysts say that's partly due to resentment over the way the mayor changed term-limits law after saying he supported term limits for officeholders.
Thompson narrowed the gap between him and Bloomberg, but it was still a double-digit margin in the latest poll.
