Cross River tops list of fake teachers in FTS
National News Nov 4, 2009 CROSS River State has the highest number of fake teachers participating in the Federal Teachers’ Scheme (FTS) with 597 out of 3,248 discovered by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) which carried out a certificate verification exercise in collaboration with colleges of Education and Polytechnics for the second set of participants currently on the scheme.

They were found to have entered the scheme with fake results or certificates purportedly obtained from 60 colleges of education and polytechnics across the country.

Their names have been removed from the scheme and directed to immediately withdraw Adamawa State followed with 447 fake teachers, Delta State had 278, Niger with 214, Kano 204, Gombe 142, Kogi 142, Kaduna 141, Sokoto had 159, Kebbi 110, Edo 113, and Lagos with 105.

Others are Taraba State which had 90 fake teachers participating in the scheme, FCT Abuja 82, Enugu 69, Jigawa 41, Ogun 38, Abia 30, Oyo 29, Bauchi 68, Anambra 20, Plateau 19, Rivers 15, Benue 16, Kwara 9, Ekiti 7, Osun 8, Nasarawa 7, Borno 6, Imo 22, Yobe 7, Katsina 3, and Ebonyi 5.

The Federal Government established the Federal Teachers Scheme in 2006 aimed at enhancing supply of teachers to basic education institutions and providing employment opportunities to NCE graduates.

Intended as a two-year programme for unemployed qualified NCE holders, the scheme also served as a period of internship preparatory to their taking permanent teaching appointments.

According to Mr. David Apeh, Principal PRO of UBEC, participants for the scheme are recruited and posted to teach in Public Primary Schools and Junior Secondary Schools across the states of the federation and FCT.

At least, Igbo and Yoruba, the 2 big giants and greatest groups in Nigeria are not as involved. Ok, except Lagos that spoilt the broth. Not so bad, though.
