Vaswanis: Court quashes deportation order
Latest news
Written by Muideen Olaniyi
Thursday, 05 November 2009 02:15
A Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday quashed the deportation of the Vaswani Brothers, the withdrawal of expatriate quota of companies within the Stallion Group and the repatriation of such staff. Justice A. M. Liman in his judgement described their deportation and other actions taken against Sunil, Haresh and Mahesh Vaswani as unlawful, and directed the reinstatement of their expatriate quota.
The Judge agreed with the counsels to the plaintiffs Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim SAN, who led Professor G. A Olawoyin SAN, Mr. Tunji Oyeyipo SAN and Mr J. A. Badejo, that the Vaswani’s cannot be deported.

The Judge said their expatriate quotas and staff cannot also  be withdrawn and repatriated respectively  without complying with Section 36 of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 and Articles 7, 12(4) & (5) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

The Judge held that failure of the government to seek and obtain representation from Stallion Group  is a breach of their fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution.    A statement by one of its directors, Alhaji Tajudeen Olalere reads in part: The judgement puts an end to our unfortunate predicament.

are these Vaswani brothers not Nigerians by now? Huh

They should at least have Nigerian green cards if not citizenship. Why invest so much in Nigeria and not have a personal interest there?

borrow a page from western countries nah! Spare us all this deportation drama every so often.

Or is there something I'm missing? Huh

Nigerian government comprise legislature, executive and judiciary period.

Military govt first deported them, Obj reversed it and later deported them. Umaru came and reversed Obj decision only to turn around to deport them within a year. Now that has been reversed again whether by executive or judiciary, it is nigerian govt that is going forward and backward

Why am I not surprised, do you guys know how many of these Asian ( Indians, chinkos, Lebanese etc) guys cheat our govt( who cares) but they also cheat our fellow Nigerians that work for them as well

They only strive cos our system is so corrupt and they know they can buy their way with money in any of our government institutions.

Its a shame that the court even disapprove thier deportation, Mind you this is not the first time these guys (vaswani) have been deported.

I don't know why no one is talking about this being another 'policy sommersault gone wrong by the Yar'adua government'. These guys were already kicked out of Nigeria but Tanimu Kurfi's number economic assignment as Yar'adua's economic adviser was to bring back the Vaswanis.

In fact Tanimu and Aondoakaa jetted to London to have a meeting with this guys all in their bid to woo these guys. So I honestly don't know why the same Governmment is wasting everyone's time by going to court.

I think they should leave the vaswanis alone and think of how to tighten our system so that people can not continue to cheat the system whether you are Indian, Lebanese, Chinese or Nigerian.

They are always deported everytime only to be brought back after they have settled the new powers that be!!  Everybod wan chop the cake jare!!
And dem get Naija citizenship, so why deport them??

At the end of the day they will pass the "settlement" in the form of higher prices to the Nigerian public!! As long as they do not outsell Dangote they will be fine!!
The rice and cars they sell are cheaper than any other Naija company and people like Dangote can not compete with them so they get deported.

They were planning mass rice cultivation in Nigeria----which is directly antagonistic to a lot of Nigerian Importers!!
