If You Test HIV Positive
« on: May 31, 2005, 05:17 PM »

If are tested HIV positive, will you tell and what will you do?

I did an HIV test of recent and well as you'll guess I'm negative.  So I was wondering if was positive what would I have done.

I won't have told anyone I guess and most likely would have pretended nothing big has happened to me.  I wonder what you guys will do if you had HIV (I'm not wishing you have, just thoughts Grin)

And please know your HIV status!

Well I will just run crazy and start laughing if I discover such a thing.  I mean, I'm not sexually active and I don't live with anyone who is known to HIV, so the question I will ask is, "why me?"

I think anyone who is HIV positive should not be silent about it. Its sad, knowing when you're going to die, but its sadder going through it alone. Let your loved ones know about it so they can help you through it by showering you with loads of love.

And if you're planning your wedding only to be blown by the news, let your intended know please.

AIDS is in very low occurance here (chances of things like skin cancer is much higher) but it is just plain irrisponsible not telling anyone about it, think about what could happen. You could infect another person with it as well!!!

If i discovered i am HIV+ (TOUCH WOOD)!!,  i would let people i love know and it is at that point that you really know who your friends really are. It is a painful thing to want to handle it on your own. You will need all the support your can get. And of course you will have to stop being sexually active for the sake of infecting others..

have you all hear of the case where someone went to the cinema, she/he did not check the seat beore sitting and then she/he was pricked by a needle and attached to it was the message (you are now HIV +) or the case someone was pricked while walking on the beach and the same message was asstached to the neddle.

if you become infected from helping a friend then that is a whole new story and an unfortunate event...

that is just pure evil!!

Let people know?  You must be joking!  I wouldn't dare; I would rather just continue doing the things I'm doing in peace while I'm still alive.

Chigszy, we know you did not make it up. You are hereby absolved of all guilt Grin

However, the story is fake.  Most forwarded e-mails of that nature are fake.  Some people love to fabricate such stories, forward them to friends and enjoy the popularity!

I am shocked by what Seun and dablessed have to say about this topic.  Seun, you may really not be sexually active and still get HIV.  It is not only through sex that HIV is transmitted.  To dableseed and ilks there is a big difference between HIV & AIDS.

If I had HIV I will tell all my friends & family about it & also try to educate them about the virus (I did an Hepatits B & HIV test last month & and the results were both negative, my friend's wife needed blood at Ayinke house the maternity of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital).  For your infromation, HIV just goes to expose the weakness of the way modern science is loopsided towards money.  They ignore viruses while they are going to see if they can conquer space, whereas they have not conquered the pressing needs of humanity.

To come nearer home every human being has at least one kind of virus in his body.  We all caught the cold virus on the day we were born.  How we cope with the cold virus depends on how we expose our self to environment that will trigger off the cold virus.

Magic johnson has been living well with the HIV virus for more than 10 years now and it has not developed AIDS yet.  HIV fights the immune system of the body.when to immune system is really down & oppotunistic diseases attack the body that cannot fight back that is when the personis now said to have AIDS.

There are a lot of NGOs that give out free information on HIV AIDS.  I recommend Community Life Project Isolo  #9 Ilori Street off Ire- Akari  Estate Road Isolo Lagos.

Re: If are tested HIV positive, will you tell and what will you do?
« #15 on: June 27, 2005, 01:07 PM »

Slowpoison, I am aware that HIV can be spread through blood transfusion, sores in the mouth if there's an exchange of saliva, piercing of the skin by unsterilized sharp objects like a blade or a needle that has been used by an HIV positive person, et cetera.  In general, "exchange of body fluids".

The reason I will not tell anyone if I am HIV positive is because of the discrimination that HIV positive people face in this country.  In fact, I've not taken the test yet because when I take it I want it to be in a private setting between me and the doctor alone.  I won't even want my family members to know when I take the test, until I've confirmed that it's negative.

I do not know how expensive the anti-retroviral drugs for managing HIV infection are in Nigeria, but I am aware that the amount of tablets you have to swallow in a day is something else!  So let's all be careful.

I know such a thing will never dear infects me, since i have my own clipper if that will be the possible cause of me being infected by the virus, I have my own water can, to prevent me from those you might have cut  or injury on their mouth region and might have the virus, and abstianity is part of my life

Then the question. If i tested HIV positive what will i do?,
I will not tell anyone except my parent and if i am married i will tell my wife only, and make sure i am going for medication and check-up always.

What a wise thing to do.  There are other diseases that is far more dangerous to HIV.  i.e. Cancer, leukaemia, sickle cell, appetites B and hell others.  So don't HIV is the end, actually you can live a longer and normal life if diagnose earlier.

80% of HIV infections in Nigeria are transmitted by heterosexual sex. Factors contributing to this include a lack of information about sexual health and HIV, low levels of condom use and high levels of STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, which make it easier for the virus to be transmitted. Blood transfusions are responsible for 10% of all HIV infections. There is a high demand for blood because of road traffic accidents, blood loss from surgery and childbirth, and anaemia from malaria. As there is no coordinated national blood supply system, blood isn't routinely tested for HIV, and a study last year found that 4% of blood donors in Lagos were HIV positive. The remaining 10% of HIV infections are acquired through other routes such as mother-to-child transmission, homosexual sex and intjecting drug use. The rate of mother to child transmission in Nigeria has gone up in recent years as the number of HIV positive women has increased.
Although prostitution is illegal in Nigeria there are more than 1 million female sex workers. HIV infection rates among sex workers have been estimated to be as high as 30% in some areas. There are low levels of condom use among sex workers because of a lack of knowledge about HIV transmission and poor acceptance by male clients. \
Prevention
Education
Nigeria's STD/HIV control estimates that 60% of all new HIV infection occurs in young people between the ages of 15 and 25. Recently a new curriculum was introduced for comprehensive sex education for 10 - 18 year olds. It focuses on improving young people's knowledge and attitudes to sexual health and reducing sexual risk taking behaviours. In the past attempts at providing sex education for young people were hampered by religious and cultural objections. The new curriculum was developed with consultation from religious and community leaders and hopefully will remain in place in the future.

Good article, but you left me wondering the original source of this information.  Can you provide us with references to the statements highlighted above in red... please?
