Football or Soccer Fans in Nigeria: Introduction
« on: April 05, 2005, 12:19 PM »

This is a thread for faithful soccer (football) fans on this forum to introduce themselves.

My name is Seun and I'm based in Ogun State, Nigeria.  My favorite Nigerian players are Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo, and I watch soccer on TV whenever a national soccer team is in the knock-out stages of a major competition (World cup, Olympics, CAF football finals, et cetera).

The international player I love to criticize most is David Beckham!  I also enjoy criticizing the Manchester United football club and their current manager, Alex Ferguson.  I love criticizing them because the other soccer fans in my family (father, brother, and sister) love 'Manchester United', as they call it.  My favorite international player is Ronaldo, though I'm also in love with Ronaldino.

What about you?  Introduce yourself and tell us about your favorite soccer players, teams, clubs or personalities.

Erm, hi,

I absolutely love football and stay glued to the screen whenever any of my favourite teams is playing.
- Together with the rest of Nigerian girls (most actually) I nursed a huge crush for Sunday Oliseh for a long time.
- I love Okocha because he's such a constantly marvellous dribbler and player. Okocha remains one of the highest paid Nigerians in football career. He was raking in £90,000.00 a week at some point. Yes, that's ninety thousand pounds Shocked
- Kanu remains one of my favourites and as I always say to people who criticise him all the time, even though they've fixed his heart problem and all, should he overdo it and slump to his grave on the pitch like Okparagi?  What will come of that? Nigerians will wail for 2 days, if that, and forget about him. Please leave the poor guy alone.

International team....
- anywhere, anytime, any day it's got to be Arsenal. I love that team. It was really sad we didn't go far in EUFA. Suffice to say that I automatically do not like Manchester United. So Seun, that's another thing we appear to have in common.
- T Henry is an amazing player. Sol, Vierra, Cole.... the whole team really.
- David Beckham is like a big fish in a pot in England football, which was why he was such a huge name. Now he's in Spain where the average fan in the stand is a potential Abedi Pelle, he's a small fish in the ocean, totally insignificant. Poor guy.
- Wayne Rooney Angry, my goodness, I can't stand that sick child. Have you noticed how rude he is to referees? He should be benched for a year or at least till he learns some manners.

By the way nice match between Liverpool and Juventus last night. Apparently that was their first time of playing each other since the mayhem of 1985 (20 years) when a stadium stampede resulted in the death of over 39 people. Liverpool won 2-1.

I could go on for ever, but I'm guessing others want to comment as well.

Ole, ole ,ole, ole, ole etc.

Here's another soccer fan, need I add that I used to be a striker back in the old days, when I was in school?  Did you guys see last night's Champions league matches:
  Chelsea (4) - Bayerm Munich (2), and
  Inter Milan (0) -  AC Milan (2)

Nice job by Lampard of Chelsea, who scored two goals while Joe Cole and Drogba both scored one goal.

I guess Inter couldn't break the jinx of 3 years Cry.  AC Milan's Jaap Stam and Shevchenko ( my guy Smiley) had a goal to their credit.  Unfortunately our boy Obafemi Martins couldn't score but he tried, guess AC's defence was tight.

Watch out for UEFA league Newcastle vs Sporting Lisbon tonight.

The name's Trae.  Soccer addict: 'naija for life!', though I don't think I'm half as good as Mercy Akide at kicking the ball Grin.  My favourite player, I guess, is Aghahowa...he be doning the famous number "17".  I like Trezeguet of France aswell. he also rocks the number 17 at juventus! Tongue.  Probably because our names are alike. What more can I say? Tongue

Hey, I am femonchy and I am based in Lagos.  I am a football afficionado, meaning that any team that plays sweet football is my team.  So, it's a time dependent  thing! lol.  But really I have a soft spot for any club with a Nigerian, and Arsenal used to be my team before: you guessed right!

Aight, Jay Jay never earned 90k per week anywhere (check the info out) from Frankfurt to PSG to Fernabache to Bolton.  But I still envy his take home pay sha!

Peace, aight, and nice meeting you all!

Name's domino. I like football but love it most when the heat is on, on major competitions.  Any team that plays well, I give you full support to go ahead and win!  I so remember France '98, where I screamed and screamed for France to win and WIN they did (even lost my voice)!

Naija wise, anytime t, Jay Jay and Kanu remain my favourite players, while internationally, T.Henry, and Beckham have caught my fancy.  Z.Zidane is not a bad one too (he's growing old hun..? Grin)

Maybe I'm not "faithful" enough, ehn Seun?

Did you guys see the unbelievable match today? Norwich made a big dummy of Manchester United. Imagine, just last week, we (Arsenal) beat Norwich U. 4-0 and they charged back this week to knock Man you to-0. The first goal was conceded through a freekick orchestrated by no less than Rooney. Second goal had to do with him as well. Anyways, it sure is good to see ManU sobered.

The first leg of the semi-final championship match between Chelsea and Liverpool ended in a goaless draw. Chelsea had the highest ball possession but Drogba and Co just couldn't score a goal. Let's see how the second leg goes.

I am looking forward to the outcome of the return leg match Chelsea- Liverpool UEFA competition  tonight. I hope Silverbird TV airs the match. Any fans out there? Are you going with the boys in blue or the boys in red? For me it's the boys in red!

Re: Football or Soccer Fans in Nigeria: Introduction
« #14 on: May 03, 2005, 09:50 AM »

I'm going for the boys in blue and we are all going to see a different chelsea in action today.

CHELSEA NEWS
1- Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is expected to welcome back Arjen Robben and
     Damien Duff to the team.

2- Robben is still not 100% fit following an ankle injury and missed Chelsea's title
winning game at Bolton on Saturday, but seems set to feature against Liverpool.

3- Chelsea has won the premier league and carling cup so I see no reason why they
     wont win the UEFA league

4- William Gallas, a central defender drafted in to play left back after Wayne Bridge's
broken ankle in February, is playing with a back strain.

5- Chelsea Line-up: Cech, Cudicini, Makelele, Terry, Johnson, Gallas, Carvalho,
Robben, Gudjohnsen, Drogba, Smertin, Tiago, Lampard, Cole, Forssell, Kezman,
      Jarosik, Geremi, Huth, Duff.

LIVERPOOL NEWS
1-  Liverpool will be without the suspended midfielder Xabi Alonso so Dietmar Hamann
looks set to recover from injury in time to replace the Spaniard.
Alonso's punishment comes after he was booked in the goalless first leg

2-  Manager Rafael Benitez rested Milan Baros, Djimi Traore, Sami Hyypia, Igor Biscan
and Luis Garcia against Boro, but all will return to face Chelsea.

3-   Harry Kewell completed his full 90 minutes since mid-December following groin
problems and is also expected to play.

4- Liverpool Line-up: Dudek, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher, Traore, Luis Garcia, Gerrard,
Hamann, Riise, Kewell, Baros, Cisse, Smicer, Nunez, Carson, Le Tallec, Warnock,
    Welsh, Potter.

liverpool are a win-win-lose-draw kind of team. no consistency. and their attack was blunt in the first leg. definately the boys in blue are consistent, deserve to qualify and will. i'm looking at an AC milan-Chelsea final.

@ Mamba. Did you see Mourinho's face at the end of the match Cheesy? Yippie, up Liverpool! Although, I am not a fan, only wanted them to beat Chelsea so that my real boys AC milan can win the championship. By the way watch out for the return leg match between AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven  tonight. The first leg ended 2-0 in favour of AC Milan. Looking forward to watching them do it again.

AC Milan made it to the finals of the UEFA championship league  Cool. Although the game ended 3-1 in favour of PSV Eindhoven, goal aggregate is 3-3, AC Milan won with an away goal advantage. Men! they gave me quite a scare Huh. Final match comes up in about a month? AC Milan -Liverpool. I just can't wait!

Lips sealed Hi Seun, it is Chawkee, aahhh... , so many favourite players b/because I have been keeping a tab on handfuls, that is why I can't start mentioning. All hail the international players of this decade, they are really doing some wonderful job. That is the reason their Naira equivalent keeps escalating Grin  Or what would you say of JJ who's mansion is fast growing.

But Seun, no talk say na 4 my mouth you hear am o, .......... (many of them go soon retire and the hot Naira equivalent go stop to pour in, like it happened before, .... (Yeking, Amotaxi.....)

That is why I want to recognise the upcoming ones, .....(Obagoooaal, Makinwa, Taiye Taiwo...) They will put 'Niger4life' there on the world map soonest. Charl.   Smiley

I Love The Super Eagles, Arsenal and Real Mardrid. But am a Gunner 4live. Theiry Henry is one of my best players, I am extremely proud to be called Nigerian along side Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu, Aghahowa(Our Talisman), and the deadliest striker to ever come from Nigeria Obafemi Martins. I Love to hate Chelsea and their coach Muhrinho. Manchester United and their supporters will only have past glories to talk about for years to come.
