A Little HumourGroup setting like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)Group Leader: Today we have a new member in our midst, perhaps she would like to share.
Trini: umm, not really
Group Leader: Come on sister, we are here for you
Trini: Well … ok , my name is Trini Girl and I was banned from Nairaland
Group together: Hi Trini Girl!
Trini blushes shylyTrini: Well … it is like this, my good friend had just been hurt by a Nigerian guy in my country. I was so angry because I had never heard anything good about Nigerian men. So, I went online to look for a Nigerian chat room, where I could blow off some steam.
Group shaking heads.One group member:
Kei! (while clapping hands)
Another:
Haba. It is not good oooo!
Trini continues: Well, I stumbled across this Nairaland forum on Google and I decided to join, and that’s when it happened.
Trini girl pauses as her voice cracks.Group leader: It’s ok Trini, take your time.
Group leader pats Trini’s backTrini girl sighs and continues: Well … I actually wasn’t following the thread, I just posted my view and left. I did not see a lot of what folks had to say. But then I realized I had to defend my position since people were thinking that I hated Nigerians, and I did not!
But anyway, after a while I realized it did not make sense to argue and I left it alone. I wasn’t angry anymore anyway. I just thought everyone was entitled to their own opinion and I left it there.
Group leader: So you were not affected by the comments?
Trini Girl: I was shocked! It was the first time I had ever seen a forum where people could use such language and get away with it. Nigerians are a hot tempered bunch. But I was ok.
Group leader: So what happened next
Trini Girl: Well, a couple days later I tried to login with my username and password and I was denied! I saw a message that I had been ….
BANNED!Trini breaks down in tearsGroup leader : It’s ok , it’s ok , let it allllll out, that’s it … good girl …
Trini wipes tears away.Trini through tears: It was the first time anything like that had ever happened to me in my life! I was angry! He hurt my feelings. Especially since I never said I hated Nigerians. I thought he was being unfair to me since I read similar threads and they were not banned.
Group Member: So what did you do then?
Trini (sniffling): Well,
(wiping tears away) I said good riddance since obviously I was not welcome, and I did not go back to Nairaland till 4 months later.
Group Member: So you don’t know how long the ban was for?
Trini: No. It could have been weeks or months. I do not know. I only tried to get in once.
Group Leader: So what made you come back?
Trini: Well, I’m not sure. I had told my friend about it and he laughed at me. He works at the Nigerian High Commission in Trinidad. I think he had asked me if I was still banned, and that made me come back and check to see if I was. That was in December.
Group Leader: I see, so, how have you been recovering since then? How is your time in Nairaland? Is it pleasant?
Trini smiles: Yes, I must say, I am happy to be back. It is only now that I have started contributing to posts and I have been learning a lot. I also hope that readers learn something from my posts as well.
Group Leader: Are you afraid to contribute since your experience?
Trini: Nah! No way. Fear is not a word in my vocabulary. I try my best to stick to the rules, yeah, but other than that I’m ok. I didn’t even know that banning was a normal occurrence. I thought I was the only one. Now I know I am not alone. But I have read many posts where people keep referring to being banned, or having fear of being banned by Mr. Moderator.
I find it very funny, but maybe it’s good they fear being banned because sometimes people can get carried away and say very lewd and personal things and use coarse language. Moreso the younger ones.
Group Leader: So you’re saying you don’t insult people.
Trini: Welllll, at some point it may get a little personal because we’re dealing with human beings here. I also lose my temper at times. I think some jesting and teasing is permissible, it adds to the fun of it. But it must not get out of hand. We must not cross the line.
Group member impatiently: Is this a support group or an interview?
Group Leader: Sorry, you are right.
(clears throat) So Trini, how are you
feeeeeling now that you have shared?
Trini: Ohhhh I feel so much better now that I have gotten this off my chest. Thank you so much.
Group Leader: One more question. How do you feel about Nigerian men now?
Trini: Ohhh I love them! I have met so many funny, intelligent, witty Nigerian men since I came back to Nairaland. I especially like the fact that so many of them believe in having a relationship with God and family. I see why our women fall for them so hard. It’s unfortunate that the bad apples in the bunch give you a bad name.
Trini smilesGroup Leader: Wonderful, wonderful, praise God. Everyone, let's give Trini a round of applause for being such a good sport and sharing with us today.
Group applauds Trini Girl and everyone moves over and gives her a big hug!!
