@Terracotta

Your analysis is incredibly flawed because u don't adjust for population differences

For instance,Kaduna has  higher numbers than Ekiti.Does that tell us that people from Kaduna are more educated than people from Ekiti.It simply means that there are far more people in Kaduna than Ekiti

Can't ignore a decent challenge--Rrather than exposing a flaw in the figures I posted, your point demonstrates why the reliance on JAMB statistics proves nothing either. Tell me, did you, docokwy, babyosisi etc. adjust for population differences when they declared that Igbos were the "most educated Nigerians". What statistical analysis was offered to compare the percentage of, for instance, Edo state indigenes (2nd place on the JAMB list), Delta state indigenes (fourth place on the JAMB list), or Akwa Ibom state indigenes (6th place on the JAMB list), to the percentage of Igbos, Yorubas, Hausas etc. registered for JAMB? If the population of those states (which are ethnically homogenous states with the exception of Delta) are smaller than that of the "Igbo", "Yoruba", "Hausa" etc. states yet they are still posting comparable or superior numbers of JAMB takers, an objective observer would note that point while making their claims on who is "most educated." Imo state for instance is ranked 13th in terms of population and is number 1 on the JAMB list, while Edo state is ranked 27th in population and number 2 on the JAMB list (check Wikipedia for the stats). Based on your suggestion of "adjustments for population differences", which state do you think should come out on top? Any statisticians reading this thread with nothing better to do should feel free to supply us with an answer Cheesy

So my fellow countryman--what is the quantitative difference between your critique of the raw population figures in the UNESCO report--which absolutely suggests that Kaduna has more "educated" people than Ekiti if we use secondary school enrollment as the yardstick  Wink)--and using raw population numbers from the JAMB test? Both figures are based on a head count and not on any adjustments based on population/percentages. I'm afraid you'll have to dump your conclusions from JAMB results as well if you want to "adjust for population differences." If not, you'll have to accept the UNESCO figures as equally valid. And on that basis, Nigerians from Lagos, Ogun, Edo, and Delta states would be considered the "most educated" in the country. Feel free to try again.

Quote
What u need is data that tells u what percentage of people from a state are enrolled in school.

If state A has a population of 2 million people and 1 million have gone through schooling,State B has a population of 1.5 million and 900,000.The later is more educated even though it has fewer people who have gone through school

I don't need to do anything--as I said, I avoided what Xcape accurately called an ethnic "pissing contest" because I think this is an insidious argument held by people with ulterior motives. (For instance, one Nairalander posting here's reputation as a bit of an ethnocentric rabble-rouser at Nigeriavillagesquare.com precedes him, since I'm a casual reader there Wink ). Anyway, I think the previous passage has established that this argument is a red herring since the JAMB results suffer from the same critique. Curiously, none of the people boosting those JAMB results as "accurate" have noticed that they weren't "adjusted for population differences."Cheesy

Quote
U have to make adjustments for population differences.Otherwise we can conclude that Nigerians are better educated than Jewish people because there are more Nigerians in school than Jews

Why yes, 4Play--we absolutely could conclude that Nigerians are better educated than Jewish people because there are more Nigerians in school than Jews. That's the basic premise of this thread, isn't it  Huh Counting which group of Nigerians "has more people in school" than the other  Huh Or is there some other arbitrary criteria that was decided on while I wasn't reading? Of course, you can submit your "adjusted for population differences" argument here, but you'll have to produce actual figures rather than assumptions and guesses.

Quote
Go back and get us some proper data

Not so fast, slick--I throw the challenge back to you. You and the other JAMB cheerleaders dismissing the UNESCO report will

a) have to provide an accurate "adjustment for population figures" for all 36 states in the JAMB listing, since the results you are using are just raw head counts like the UNESCO report;
b) then prove that states with a higher number of JAMB registrants also produce a higher number of people admitted to university. I'm sure you're familiar with the adage that quantity is not quality--there are around 806,000 people taking JAMB exams every year, yet there are only 147,000 university places available for them. That means that more than 700,000 JAMB takers aren't going on to higher education. JAMB results boosters should be able to demonstrate that the states with the highest amount of registrants are not the states with the highest amount of students who are not admitted to universities.

As the old cliche goes, "there are lies, damn lies, and statistics." The latter do not always show what we think or what we wish. If you think the UNESCO report is "incredibly flawed" because it lacks "adjustment for population," then I've shown why the JAMB results are "incredibly flawed" for the same reason. Oya--our resident JAMBites have to prove their case with better lies, damn lies, and statistics. I doubt that I'll be back to join you for the rest of the pissing contest, but I hope I've given you some food for thought. Hope all of that wasn't too complicated  Wink

@Terracotta

Stop using big words to mask ignorance because it won't fly past Donzman. Edo state is far from homogenous and neither is Akwa Ibom so none of those states you mentioned is homogenous.

Funny enough you took on the easier challenge. Why don't you take on the bigger question posed to you by the docokwy guy?. . .Not everybody who is enrolled in secondary school  in Lagos is an indigene of Lagos. That is the main reason why your silly UNESCO statistic cannot be used. The JAMB stats. are more valid because they reflect state of origin as opposed to the UNESCO stat. which reflects state of residence/education. I went to school in Benin and so did a bunch of my friends are aren't from Bini, they'll count in the Edo secondary school enrollment stat. Such an error will not occur with the JAMB stat.

Hopefully you get the point and stop typing of paragraphs while saying nothing at the same time.

Quote
Curiously, none of the people boosting those JAMB results as "accurate" have noticed that they weren't "adjusted for population differences."

Don't be dumbIf Yorubas/Hausas are more populated than Igbos(like all the census have told us) and people of Igbo origin have a higher university application rate, no population adjustment is needed. It is obvious that Igbos are getting more education both in terms of raw numbers and in proportion to population, isn't that right? Unless you want us to believe that the census is wrong which is on you to prove.

Therefore, for the 3 major ethnic groups, the JAMB statistic is not flawed or is more accurate compared with the UNESCO trash. We all know the number of Igbos attending schools outside of Igboland, enough said!

Again you make long posts without thinking.

TerraCotta,

Do you know how to read? You made a number of untrue statements, one of which is that Edo state is number two after Imo in university admission. That is totally incorrect.

If you know how to read, please go back to the JAMB site and read it properly for all the years, so you can establish a trend of what goes on. However, I can already tell you that there are two types of statistics in that site:

1. Data on JAMB application

http://www.jambng.com/app_ume.php     (for universities)
http://www.jambng.com/app_pce.php      (for polytechnics)

2. Data on JAMB admission.

http://www.jambng.com/adm_ume.php  (for universities)
http://www.jambng.com/adm_pce.php    (for polytechnics)

Unfortunately, there is no data for GRADUATION. As you rightly pointed out, quantity is not quality. So, the emphasis is on admission statistics, I repeat on ADMISSION STATISTICS. and not APPLICATION STATISTICS. There is data in this regard for several years. I have summarised the data for 2004/2005 as follows:

The north is said to have about 75 million people. Of this, only 22,675 were admitted into the universities in Nigeria in 2004/2005, compared to 99815 from the South which is purported to have about 64 million people.

Specifically for the South:

South East (SE) has 41,126 (Imo =15,608; Anambra = 9967; Abia =6054; Enugu =5986; Ebonyi =3519. 20885 JAMB admittants in the SE are females. Meaning that in contrast to widely held conception, slightly more SE males than females attend universities

South South (SS) has 35,788, with Delta (9514), Akwa Ibom (8136), Edo (6630) and Rivers (4905) leading the pack. Bayelsa (4191) had a tremendous improvement in comparison to previous years. Cross Rivers brings up the rear in the SS

South West has 22,901, with Ondo (5214) leading the pack, followed by Ogun (4506) and Lagos (4141). Lamidi Adedibu’s state of Oyo, with over 5 million inhabitants, brings up the rear in the SW with 2639.

This trend has been like this for the past several years, with slight changes here and there. But in all cases, Imo, Anambra and Delta have always remained on top. Thus the South East, followed by the South South are the most educated Nigerians since recent times.

From the above data, it is clear that the North has a problem which by extension, is helping to drag Nigeria backwards. Little wonder ignorance, elitist manipulations, easy brain-washing and other characteristics associated with uneducated societies are rife in the North. In the North, Kogi (4745) leads the pack of university admittance in 2005 followed by Benue (3688). Jigawa (210) Yobe (284) and Zamfara (383) bring up the rear, and dismally too. Curiously, Kano with the highest population has only a paltry 1307. This is not surprising as the population comprises significantly of illiterate beggars and Almajiris
,

If you make a painstaking effort to study the available data, then there is no doubt who are the most educated. Moreover, secondary education (which data from UNICEF you are flaunting; and which is flawed because it is not state-of-origin based) as it is currently in Nigeria, can hardly be said to make one educated. University and Polytechnic education therefore are the most basic ways to assess educational attainment in Nigeria at the moment.

@ xtycod that is the dumbest argument/statement I've read in a long time

because 100 students were rusticated they're now the SW is educationally disadvantaged? If I choose to follow your warped line of reasoning,

then since more SE people are admitted to universities, then a greater proportion of the cultists would be from there too. would that be acceptable

to you?

secondly, this question is still not clear - is this claim of 'most educated' based on sheer number of people or the proportion of the group being talked about?

One may argue that there has been a backlog of SE people/SS people not going to school for a while which are now applying and being admitted

but the SW may have had consistent figures for years based on its population, so there is still a lot of clarification to be made

but like Doc said, based on admission stats, the SE leads in sheer number admitted

define what you mean by 'several years' mr x, your argument is still flawed - populations of the two regions need to be specified

before any concrete conclusions can be made, let me give an example:

what if out of say 20million from the SW 23,000 go to uni, and out of 50million in the SE 42,000 go to uni, who is the disadvantaged group?

having more numbers doesn't necessarily mean you have an advantage dude, simple reasoning should tell you that.
