somewhat but you're not likely to be considered for a job in Lagos based on how light you are.

you underestimate the situation i guess.  Undecided

maybe for guys, it's not that much of a problem.

I'm sorry to crush anyone's ego here, being light/dark doesn't make you special. Go to my village, you'll see light skinned individuals grinding it out with poverty , come to Lagos and you'll see dark skinned individuals living it up, when did I miss this discrimination?

People might be amazed at your skin colour because you look different, doesn't guarantee you any special treatment, it all boils down to your ability(ies)

To compare it to racism like that practiced by our colonial masters err idiots would be stretching the truth a little too far.

sharrap you! I never meant that in Nigeria it's comparable to racism. Thankfully It's not that absurd over there but it is kind of a prejudice to favor one girl over the other just due to complexion which i said is just a sad remanant of colonial times.

For once i tend to agree wholeheartedly with your last post Donzman, apparently some of us must have missed this form of Nigerian racism!

Bad feelings between Africans and Indians was at the root of Idi Amin's deportation of Indians in the 70s

I might be wrong but IMO Idi Amin deported the indians primarily because they were in charge of most of the economy of Uganda then. After they left, the economy all but collapsed.

yeah. it's a gender thing.

skin tone (in Nigeria) isn't that much of a big deal if you're male.
You see that males and females reason differently on this issue.

It's the women that bug themselves with things that don't matter, just like women world over. If it's not skin, it's breats, if it's not breasts, it's cellulite. If it isn't cellulite, it's crows feet, if it isn't crow's feet, it's bent knees. If it isn't bent knees, it's straight knees.

IMO, We sent the Ghanians packing because they were dark as hell. After they left, our economy collapsed.

There is evidence that suggests good looking people get a better  deal in life:better jobs, partners ,income e.t.c,.

In Nigeria where light complexion is seen as integral to the perception of good looks,it might be the case that lighter skinned people get a better deal in life

But that does not equate to anything on the level of racism

Idi Amin was exploiting tensions between the 2 communities going back decades.OF course part of the reasons for the tensions was the Indians' domination of the economy, this and a number of other factors poisoned the relationship between the 2 communities .

@4play I am not conversant with the politics during Idi Amin's time but I know that he was not one of the most likeable fellow even in his own country. I am just hearing that he had some beef with the Indians but then that wont be surprising because he also had some stuff going on with the Isrealites then. My point is that I would not use him as a standard.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that the philosophy of today's times do not espouse racism. If U are a racist today, then that is U as an individual. There were times when these kind of discrimination was the norm and a whole race just thot that they were the best and being black was a curse. White children grew up and learnt that as a gospel. However, today it has been reduced drastically to an individual basis. It is ur choice to be racist if U want and not because it is championed by the prevalent philosophy of the day

I know people who made a bunch of money off TURA soap, exploiting women and their vain needs. In the end, the genuinely GOOD women get the best men with looks included ofcourse.

Where is that Indian man?.  . .I still demand to know why Indians think I'm out to kill them or something? Huh

I beg to disagree, while we may not have the blanket and open philosophy of racism as we had in the 1940s and 50s, what we have at present is institutionalised racism. The insidous racism of the Jade Goody variety.
The kind of racism where African is portrayed as a haven of disease, hunger and suffering and the western nations as angels sent from heaven! The kind of racism that exists in certain "white-only" sports like golf, tennis and winter sports.
The kind of racism where black people tend to pay more interest for mortgage than the average white, are twice as likely to be denied mortgage loans.

Racism will never go away, it is how we respond to it that will make the difference in the long run.

@Uche2Nna

When Idi Amin first came to power,he was actually popular and when he deported Asians, that was greeted with approval by most Ugandans

The racism that exists today is not as vehement as before but rather more subtle.

I am not saying that  we have annihilated racism, it is still there but just in little pockets. It is no longer institutionalized as it were before because if it were I would not even be here posting. However, we have a long way to go, agreed but I am happy it is getting better.

@ David  Whatever is being portrayed as Africa today is not entirely wrong. As a matter of fact that is the condition that 80% of Africans find themselves. Now how is that racism if U are pointing out the inadequacies and the stupidity of our leaders even if the person doing the pointing is a white man
