@Wendy
Some people do term their self as such but shouldn't those who term their self as African American have that choice? After all, it was the African Americans who's ancestors were taken from Africa and over time, Descendants of African slaves began to realize just how much they had been misplaced. A misplaced people should not have to lose everything, including the right to say who they are.
Now, what I just said in the above does not go for all black people in America. Some black people in America don't even akckowledge their African ancestory, nor do they care to but for thsoe who do, that should be their choice and no on elses.
It's kind of like a person who is mixed with white and black are you going to ask the question that why can't that person be termed as either or, white or black? Or, are you going to let that choice be up to the individual? It's really no one else's business quit frankly. The individual is the one who has to live with his or hers choices, not the other people on the outisde looking in, wondering why can't.
Your quiet correct that it should be left to as a matter of choice however that's not what it is. I don't know if I told this story but at my school a black girl from England came to study here and someone referred to her as an African American from England. Isn't that stupid? Most people have not gotten the choice as the government have employed a tactic which is so often not noticed. Why is it that when a white person commits a crime on tv its a criminal, however if it is other race their face and race will be continually splashed across tv screens as if.

Quote I hope you can understand this.
But do you know what? Some Americans turn up and the whole place descends into chaos.
Typical old tactic of divide and rule used by Empires.
Sorry but Africa and Europe not falling for it anymore.
Look at Delf trying to separate Europe From America. Doesn't he know that it was Europeans who went into Africa and separated Africans like little animals. The darker ones from th lighter ones, etc. Doesn't he know that Europeans are the ones who started and stole America?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish to state that Africa was a divided continent long before the Europeans. By Divided I mean distinct and different in term of culture, thoughts, pride, religion and most of all the Political structure. Take the case of Nigeria as an example, the North, south, east and west were different regions governed by different systems. It was actually the British that brought about a sort of unity. And - i stand to be corrected - but I believe the Brown Paper bag division < separation based on complexion of skin , darker vs the lighter> was done with African slaves in the west and not to Africans

@LASIEFAIRE I wish to state that Africa was a divided continent long before the Europeans. By Divided I mean distinct and different in term of culture, thoughts, pride, religion and most of all the Political structure. Take the case of Nigeria as an example, the North, south, east and west were different regions governed by different systems. My Sister is a Christian we have the same mother and father, we also had the same upbringing but I don't have a religion, I don't even go to church and i raise my children that they have a choice to be religious or not. My sister and I don't share the same politics, religion and not only in looks but we are distinctly different. Does that mean she is not my sister and that we are divided? It was actually the British that brought about a sort of unity. What! And - i stand to be corrected - but I believe the Brown Paper bag division < separation based on complexion of skin , darker vs the lighter> was done with African slaves in the west and not to Africans I may or may not be spelling correctly but the Hootsie and the Tootsie from Rwanda, they were divided, separated, by the Belgian based on skin complexion and facial features such as big noses, little noses etc. People conveniently forget that African slaves from the west were enslaved in the west by whites who migrated to the west from the same British Europe you say brought about a sort of unity amongst Africans. A white person from Europe who migrates from Europe to the west is the same as the white from Europe who decided to stay in Europe but then thought to go to Africa to participate in colonization. Any way, Africa, one people!

Once, Hutus and Tutsis lived in harmony in Central Africa. About 600 years ago, Tutsis, a tall, warrior people, moved south from Ethiopia and invaded the homeland of the Hutus. Though much smaller in number, they conquered the Hutus, who agreed to raise crops for them in return for protection. Even in the colonial era -- when Belgium ruled the area, after taking it from Germany in 1916 -- the two groups lived as one, speaking the same language, intermarrying, and obeying a nearly godlike Tutsi king. Independence changed everything. The monarchy was dissolved and Belgian troops withdrawn -- a power vacuum both Tutsis and Hutus fought to fill. Two new countries emerged in 1962 -- Rwanda, dominated by the Hutus, and Burundi by the Tutsis -- and the ethnic fighting flared on and off in the following decades. It exploded in 1994 with the civil war in Rwanda in which hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed. Tutsi rebels won control, which sent a million Hutus, fearful of revenge, into Zaire and Tanzania. In Burundi, the Tutsis yielded power after a Hutu won the country's first democratic election in 1993. He was killed in an attempted coup four months later, and his successor in a suspicious plane crash in 1994, in which the Hutu leader of Rwanda was also killed. http://www.cnn.com/EVENTS/1996/year.in.review/topten/hutu/history.htmlIf its the issue of Division of Africa, The west didnt have anything to do with that. Difference? We think we are better than ya'llFalse Statement. Some do and some don't even care to dwell on such an issue. AND Ya'll think ya'll are better than us. False Statement. Some do and some don't even care to dwell on such an issue.PERIOD. If I go to Africa, I'll see the worst poverty known. If you come here you'll see a bunch of lazy ass entitled black folks.Another ignorant, false statement. Poverty of all levels exists all over the world. Poverty is poverty; there is not level of poverty in which is better than another. Secondly, the vast majority of blacks in the US work for a living, even the majority of those who are on some form of gov. assistance in which the vast majority of blacks-- not only do not receive, but further more do not even qualify for do to their high living standards. The majority of Black-Americans (76%) are middle and upper class Americans, and the group has one of the nations fastest growing middle classes. its 750 Million of ya'll and 38million of us.Another false statement. Theirs currently now over 1Bill people living on the African continent, and the African-American population now current stands at more than 43Mill strong, and is still, as it has always been increasing steadily. There's only one population group in this nation in which has a decreasing population and that is White-Americans. your population is growing (which is not good) Yes, the African population is increasing, though whether or not such is a bad thing--- is questionable. Our population is declining (which is not good) Once again, this is a false statement, in which for some odd reason many black folks seem to have their minds set on. Whatever the reasoning is, it's false. The African-American population has never decrease, not even during the Great Depression in where there was a slight decrease in the white population. If africa's people continue to climb - Africa will not be able to feed them. Circumstantial prediction. Though not at all solid fact. If Black american's population continue to shrink - our political power will shrink.Odd that you would make such a comparative statement-- considering that African-American political power is stronger now than it has ever been in history and is steadily growing. Thus contradicting your very own assumption of that the population is shrinking--- when in fact it is growing just fine and thus showing one of the many reasons the political power block has grown. I got nothing but love for Africans, between.Sure you do.

a.)as was said before, africans(immigrants) have education and economic gain as primary concern; this is speaking as a whole and not exceptions. b.)africans are not trying to question their current identity as aa's. This shows that the aa ethnic group is a constant changing group as you as any other group but very rapid in its mobility economically, numerically, and etc. c.)lineages are different as was said before. africans trace their lineages to their prospective patriarch or matriarch. AA's ,of a particular generation, just like alot of original americans, do not carry that knowledge as a whole unless they seek it out from a family member who is knowledgeable. In my birth state, which is in the south, i know of many aa's who are very knowlegeable of who is in their lineage and who is related to whom. Alot of them cannot trace it to anybody who is african but they can only trace it to indigenous americans and even name tribal affliation if such occurs. I have met aa's who can trace members who were slaves but very few. I would believe this to be the case of such members being freed or runaways before or during the early 19th century. I myself have ancestry that is traceable from south carolina-north carolina-virginia in which our extended family aka.tribe smith-poindexters are very numerous and carry cherokee lineages as a base from my mothers side. On my fathers side they are a bunch of mustees(black and indian). d.)culturally aa's are very distinct as comapred to the rest of the world and this is nothing new with amalgamated groups(peoples composed of mixed compositions ,ethnically and culturally, given rise to a new group) I have seen people try to account african things into aa's culture but it is very unsubstantial. 99.99% of aa's culture was born on american soil. contrast whites(priveledged and not poor white descendants) who carry baggage from old their country of origin. e.) finally, from the opinion of continental africans themselves, from the north to the southern tip in which i have personally met and discussed this topic. aa's are not considered african at all in any shape fashion or form. Their are specifics but the vast majority of africans are at a consensus that aa's are definately not african. i guess it would be like telling someone you are a new yorker and the the big question pops up. " oh yeah what burough? what street? what neighborhood?" Therefore, africa being nothing more than a continent, it would suffice to say that every land has its people and every people have their specifities, so representation without no knowledge or witnessess or hard core evidence would present it self dubious to one that does possess such characteristics.

AA's seem to be satisfied with either Black, African descent or AA and most of them who call their self black are taking the short route for African descent, in a sense AA is just a fine way of saying African descent. I think it is a positive way to never forget that AA's are the result of the European slavery on Africans here in America. e.) finally, from the opinion of continental Africans themselves, from the north to the southern tip in which i have personally met and discussed this topic. aa's are not considered african at all in any shape fashion or form. Their are specifics but the vast majority of africans are at a consensus that aa's are definately not african. i guess it would be like telling someone you are a new yorker and the the big question pops up. I don't see African Americans going around saying that they are African either. I my self, I say it from time to time but that is only when someone pops up and wants to try and tell me that I have no connection to Africa at all. Who is anyone to tell me that? I am not an African in the pure sense but I am definitely of African descent no matter where I was born. I wonder how those Continental Africans refer to the third, fourth and fifth generation Africans born in Europe, are they not Africans? Are they a new breed? I have seen and spoke with some Africans born in Europe who very much so remind me of African Americans in looks and culture, some of them can still speak their native tongues but they were not born in Africa and some of them have mixed in with Europeans, although you can't really tell just like you can't sometimes tell with AA's.

@Exponent I don't think Hero was saying that poverty in America is equal to poverty in Africa. As a whole, it would be better to be poor in America of course, at least one could actually find something edible if one goes dumpster diving. I think what Hero is saying is that, their are poor people or poor individuals who actually starve as well in America. Of course it is not as bad as it is in Africa but people do go hungry in America if they do not resort to begging or stealing. America is not the land of opportunity for everyone you know? In the profession I work, I see hungry children everyday, they act like they have never seen food when they see it. The parents of those children make sure if not for anything else that they bring their children to school so that they can at least eat because when they get home, there is no going in and out of the refrigerator or cupboards because there is no food in there. People don't think such a thing is possible in America but it is. People in America sleep on the streets under bridges or business doorways, they beg, go hungry for days, stink, have no health care and the list goes on. The point is, no ones hunger or no ones poverty is better or worse than someone else's hunger or poverty. It would be futile to disagree on weather my hunger should be taken more into consideration than yours because you come from a poorer country than I do. Hunger is hunger, no health care is no health care, I don't care where you live. Me my self am an American and I remember having to turn down health care from my job because it would be to much money coming from my already low budget check to cover the health care. I don't have that problem now but my point is, when I had no health care, I just didn't have it and I was just as venerable as anyone else.

Something I just wanted to add to this topic. Why is it that continent born Africans think that it is within their right to say who is African and who is not? Some Africans will say that AA's are no Africans but those same Africans will turn around and say that Jamaicans are Africans. The thing is, you got Jamaicans who will tell you that they are descendants of Africans but they are Jamaicans pure at heart. I wonder why it does not upset Continent born Africans that a Jamaican will tell them they are African decent and Jamaican pure at heart but it bothers them that an AA would say basically the same thing accept for they are American at heart. I am beginning to think that dark skin, kinky hair and poverty is being associated with who has the right to claim Africa and who does not. It is okay for a Jamaicans to have a choice to claim Africa because he comes from a place that is exposed to a level of poverty, it is believed that he suffers or shares the same experience as a continent born African. However, black Americans don't have that choice. AA's are a bunch of stuck up lazy and ungrateful fools who have no idea for which they came from even though they are aware they descend from African slaves but because they are American, and don't suffer like most Africans so called do, they can not claim Africa.
I know some one is going to refer to culture but if you do that, think about this. How many people come in here and talk about AA's being lazy and saying that AA's should be able to do better than they do because they have benefits in America that they should appreciate and take advantage of?
Let me pose this question before anyone goes off saying that.
Hypothetically speaking, what if the situation went like this, AA's held onto the same culture as Africans or Jamaicans while they lived in America for generation after generation. What would they all be accused of then?

AA's seem to be satisfied with either Black, African descent or AA This is true in your last statement! however the vast works of academia covering the identity of the black american has been dominated by black americans and not outsiders. w.e.b. du bois "The Negro" , Charles W. Chesnutt, "The Wife of His Youth" , Self-Image - "Race Love," A. M. E. Church Review, editorial, April 1886 - Paul Laurence Dunbar, four poems, 1890s, and etc. Why is it that continent born Africans think that it is within their right to say who is African and who is not? my stab would be that the base african cultural center lies in the continent itself, therfore providing a default measuring stick for an authentic african character. ex. in the quran Allah says: Al-An'am - 6:20 "Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Muhammad SAW as a Messenger of Allâh, and they also know that there is no Ilah (God) but Allâh and Islâm is Allâh's Religion), as they recognize their own sons" The similitude, " as they recognize their own sons", plays a key part in continental africans determining who and who is not african for they themselves carry the original africaness in which it is unanimously agreed by african and non-african scholars. If you were to question an aa about how is a dinner table of an igbo's house set, he/she would 99.99% not know. It is they who are african and it is they who set the rules. The same question should be posed to aa's. How is it that aa's are the only ones that can determine what and what is not authentic aa culture? i think the major wedge comes via the fact that aa's do not really get the chance to see themselves. If one was to objectively look at aa's and africans mannerisms, beliefs, creed, character, and other social characteristics down to the marrow one would find an immense amount of differences. from talking with a mad amount of africans expanding almost the entire continent, i have found that physical and ancestral lineages are put on the back burner contrast knowledge of social mannerisms, linguistical precision, and contemporary affairs. I have also found that no matter how much you imitate them, still you will be disregarded because ignorance of lineage affiliation is looked down upon in the continent. NOt all africans are of high class lineages of course but tribal affiliation is very important in the many societies that exist. This can be seen in the life-styles that exist in each tribal-nation that count for subject matters ranging from, as said before, creed, history, language, and manners. I would like to enforce the fact that this has nothing to do with how nice they treat you. it is mearly a recognition of africaness and non-africaness. I don't see African Americans going around saying that they are African either true but you see the word African used with being American which strikes a nerve in some[/some], and i repeat [b]some africans. They, who are the some, do not see anything at all african about aa's

read this new york times post by lydia polgreen 2005 quoting ms. mann an aa residing in ghana To encourage still more to come, or at least visit, Ghana plans to offer a special lifetime visa for members of the diaspora and will relax citizenship requirements so that descendants of slaves can receive Ghanaian passports. The government is also starting an advertising campaign to persuade Ghanaians to treat African-Americans more like long-lost relatives than as rich tourists. That is harder than it sounds.
Many African-Americans who visit Africa are unsettled to find that Africans treat them - even refer to them - the same way as white tourists. The term "obruni," or "white foreigner," is applied regardless of skin color.
To African-Americans who come here seeking their roots, the term is a sign of the chasm between Africans and African-Americans. Though they share a legacy, they experience it entirely differently.
"It is a shock for any black person to be called white," said Ms. Mann, who moved here two years ago. "But it is really tough to hear it when you come with your heart to seek your roots in Africa."
The advertising campaign urges Ghanaians to drop "obruni" in favor of "akwaaba anyemi," a slightly awkward phrase fashioned from two tribal languages meaning "welcome, sister or brother."

I think the diffrence is based on a mental mind set.You can even see the diffrence sumtimes I could spot a african in a crowd of 50 black people(I do it all the time),its that black people and africans carry themselves very diffrently not saying one is better than the other. And also Africans in America are like so many other immigrant races r HARD WORKERS trying to suceed in a better situation, African Americans do not even feel like immigrants, just a secondhand race, not even sometimes realizing that this is not their land, its not even the white mans land he jus stole it and calls it his own by force. The elements of being an immigrant will almost force you to be sucessful, and prideful of your accomplishments,a large % of Black people lacks these elements yet its not their fault, while living in this country government will speak, and act as if every race as if is equal, and the well know fact is that is all an illusion, and even though most black people know this they will ignore the FACT and rather live like someone is owing them, (Although partially black people r owed somthing) My 2 kobo

Chesnutt, "The Wife of His Youth" , Self-Image - "Race Love," A. M. E. If you know the history of America, it has pretty much been white people dominating everything concerning black people from education to religion. Blacks in America have been taking back charge of being in charge of what their identity is. "The Negroe" is a book written to describe an example of the black experience in America, it is not a book suggesting that black people title their self as "Negroe". Negroe is a spanish word that blacks in America would know nothing about if it was not for white people in America reffering to them as such. The depths of the book entitled "The Negroe" covers Negroe being another title for blacks in the series of titles white people came up with to identify blacks with in America and the experience attached to that. Just to name a few, in that series of titles colored and nigga would also fall in there some where. my stab would be that the base african cultural center lies in the continent itself, therfore providing a default measuring stick for an authentic african character. ex. in the quran Allah says: Al-An'am - 6:20 "Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Due to the huge European influence in Africa, Africans their self are not even the same Africans they were 100 years ago, slowly but surely Africans are losing site with who they are in order to keep up with European way of life. As long as Africans continue to develop a mind set which says that they have to leave Africa in order to survive, they will continue to open their self up to losing site with African tradition and such. As we know, Africans are leaving Africa by the heards to live and work in America, Europe and some are even desperate enough to wind up some where in China. Pretty soon, it will only be the bushmen that carry the characteristics of what a so called true African really is, what will be said then?

I like this statement. Very True! It has been only recently in lets say since the Black Conscious Movement in the 60's that Blacks in America (I say that because AA's are not the only ones that have been apart of this) have started to take control of defining themselves. That is how the term Black started because that is what Black people decided. The same can be said about African American. African Americans decided to call themselves that it wasn't something that was given to them by others. Now there were people like the gentleman named that help create that foundation of thought like W.E.B. Dubois and others but the control didn't occur until 40 years ago. That is when you start to really see the rise in African Studies and African American Studies in the States and Blacks were in the forefront and started to take control over their self-identity and their history.

Not true in terms of black Academia covering the identity of Blacks in America. If you know the history of America, it has pretty much been white people dominating everything concerning black people from education to religion Are there any books that you can refer to that at least covers a pages worth concerning the black americans identity from a white author. true, whites dominated everything concerning media, however when whites documented anything about non-whites, it was highly opinionated and lacked scholarship like that of a w.e.b. dubois. Their main concern was that of the spotlight of themselves and not those deemed subjugated. You will see this with alot of minority groups in america. The leading scholars of these particular groups are members of those groups. Do not be fooled by the name negroes, colored, and niggers for there are aa's of a generation gone who still exist using these terms formally without any regards for white people. Some of the most staunch enemies of whites used these terms. They are merely technical terms for formality which have no meaning except for the distinguishment of non-whites. Go read about the forced migrations of south-eastern native americans from their lands in which those who stayed were referred to as negroes, mulattoes, and colored. You will find this even in the spanish colonies in which indigenous populations were refrerred to as negroes. read the following quote from Lenape Then and Now: The Invisible Indians of New Jersey and Delaware by Edward F. Heite (1937 - 2005) For purposes of the census and enforcement of discriminatory laws, race in America has been defined, throughout the nineteenth century and much of the twentieth, by the subjective opinion of white record keepers. These officials frequently were ignorant of the nuanced meanings of race terminology and often were uninterested in ethnic origins. To some record-keepers, every nonwhite was "negro." a large percentage of blacks have always cared about were they came from with the exception of those who were entirely submissive and excepted their fate of captivity as is. black academia have brought to the rest of black americans a sense of i.d. and political solidarity and ethno-nationalhood. Look at Henry Louis Gates, Jr in his PBS "Wonders of the African World" in which he constantly asks questions to locals about are they black and if blacks did this and that. when he saw two black--skinned zanjabaris who told him they were persians he was dismayed. why? because he was forcing, as other AA"s do with non-aa's, their color schematic on people. this is a man who is representative of black academia, showing a sense of desperateness in seeking identity with those who have an established identity elsewhere, while at the same time turning his back on his known lineage in the americas and their accomplishments. In truth the aa's are a new ethnic group and can only trace their lineage so far just like any other group in the states. a vast majority of the groups are of recent immigrant parentage(late 1800's). The last slave ship was in 1859 and that was in areas pertaining to the gulf. regarding the east coast(specifically south-east), ships stopped coming in around 1808 and before that in other states. This is not the same for whites who kept coming until the 1930's, give or take. black americans are homegrown and are not, as alot of africans say europeanized. Their culture, since most came from there, is a hodgepodge of indian-african-european which became southern culture. they even had their own colony in africa called liberia(americo-liberians) where houses where fashioned in southern colonial style and became leaders of the country. african americans are suppose to be related to sierre leone creoles also(krio);. They, the ethnic group from their beginnings as a group, are 100% american. This does not entail any political allegiances to whites or friendly terms however it does mean foundation and survival where most would have ceased to exist. Look at other creole groups in africa. the aku or krio of gambia History: The Aku's origins are from the descendants of former recaptured freed slaves, (these were people who were rescued from intercepted ships attempting to take them from West Africa to the Americas after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807), who were repatriated back to the West coast of Africa in the 19th century. Their origins date back to the late eighteenth century when 400 impoverished Africans were sent to Sierra Leone from London. They were followed by ex-soldiers who had fought for the British in the American War of Independence and were promised freedom if they fought on the side of the British. By 1850 the Akus were spread across West Africa in small communities from Gambia to Bioko Island off the West African coast.
In the 1830s the British began a large scale transfer of some recaptured former slaves from Sierra Leone to Bathurst (now Banjul) and up-river to Georgetown (Janjangbureh) in the Central River Division of The Gambia. The community excelled compared to the indigenous communities as they had the advantage of being better English speakers and the British saw them as a way to spread Christianity and European values. Many were engaged in the fields of teaching, the clergy, clerical work, skilled building workers and labourers. Some distinguished Akus emerged such as Thomas Rafell and Thomas Joiner who were both wealth businessmen. However, the most prominent of them all was Edward Francis Small who was at the leading edge of politics from the 1920s when he called for self-rule and is regarded as the father of modern Gambian politics. The Aku community themselves were active proponents of nationalism throughout the sub-region. new groups form and disappear and some take their place and others are just written off with time.

Due to the huge European influence in Africa, Africans their self are not even the same Africans they were 100 years ago[/qoute] This is just how life revolves. economically all existing nations must operate according to the market and along with markets come the exchangement of ideas ranging in foods, taste, clothes, and etc, ibn khaldun even said this in his muqadimah in which all groups are a constantly evolving group. ancient americans are not modern americans. They didnt even call theirselves americans however the first inhabitants(not all) amalgamated with other groups(not all) and became something else. african americans were not brought over. neither were africans since there was no such alliance. maybe fulanis , igbos, yoruba and etc which in itself is debatable because such groups do not hold any past beyond mideival times and some are younger than that. same thing with native americans who did not exist as the very group that they boast today. they were cherokee, choctaw, blackfoot, and etc which are not as old as people suspect according to anthropological finds in the americas. These groups would have shunned the very idea of being american since this name represented their enemy at one time. now they boast that name claiming to be the first americans. europeans did not come as a european alliance nor as a recignized white community and represented different nations and saw there nationality as race and fought against each other; In europe and in the americas. The self proclaimed americans were english rebels who would have ended their fate as william wallace. The very founding fathers of the united states did not consider other europeans as the same race. look at what benjamin franklin wrote in his "Observations Concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling of Countries, etc." Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. I could wish their Numbers were increased. And while we are, as I may call it, Scouring our Planet, by clearing America of Woods, and so making this Side of our Globe reflect a brighter Light to the Eyes of Inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America, where we have so fair an Opportunity, by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red? But perhaps I am partial to the Compexion of my Country, for such Kind of Partiality is natural to Mankind he, here, has just excluded a mass of whites in the u.s, while alot of the general masses would not have known that ol'e ben himself is a product of discrimination being mistaken for a runaway indenture and also having a maternal grandma who was subjected to servitude. he actually in real life was indentured until luck came his way. leading europeans looked down on europeans who settled in the americas. they are now called caucasians and euro-hyphenated nation which was never even thought of until political climates changed.
