High Definition TV (HDTV) In Nigeria
« on: January 28, 2007, 04:05 PM »

Hey' all,

I think we are still backwards in Nigeria when it comes to TV experience. I was reading punch onlne last week and saw an ad about flat screen TV from Sharp. Over here in Europe we are going HD and very soon TV stations will be transmitting on HD.

What are Nigerian TV stations doing not to be left behind?

Most TV stations in Nigeria can't boast of noise-free standard definition signals.  More importantly, they don't have enough interesting programs to fill in their daily time slots.

More tellingly, the VCD format, which is half the resolution of standard definition, is still the standard for watching movies in Nigeria.  In fact, some people still watch movies on VHS tapes.

So it's too early to be thinking about high definition TV in Nigeria. It's not a priority, and not worth the cost at all.

Although I'm a tech fiend and love new gadgets I think that HDTV is a bit far-off for a country like Nigeria, if there's any company that will bring HDTV to Nigeria it will be DStv, there's talk that we'll get HD in South Africa over satellite next year, until then I'm holding off on buying a new tv.

Another thing to consider is that there will be a high demand for the spectrum used by over-the-air HDTV, government authorities might decide that instead of automatically granting it to tv stations they might want to auction it off and chances are that the big telcos will scoop up that precious spectrum.

Also another factor to consider is programming and the costs of HD to stations, they will need to get new cameras and editing studios, all this equates to a lot of money. So right now it doesn't seem commercially viable in the short term to broadcast HD in Naija.

South Africa should have over-the-air HDTV in time for the World Cup in 2010, in just over three years from now.

I don't really know about that.  While the quality television content is limited,  my understanding is that the film culture is incredibly powerful.  I don't know if you realise how far Nollywood has gone towards capturing the hearts and minds of people all over Africa.  Give yourself a pat on the back Nigeria.  I really believe that the means to deliver the message will soon follow.  As long as you strive to continuously improve the quality of what you produce the rest will follow.  Please don't allow yourself to embrace a 'good enough for Nigeria' quality standard.  Your ability to tell riveting stories is far beyond that.

Time will tell.

Bests

Eric
