Sexual Behaviour Statistics for Nigeria
« on: June 05, 2005, 11:11 AM »

According to chapter 6 of the Nigeria 2003 Demographic and Health Survey (pdf):

20.3% of women and 7.9% of men of 15 years or less have been sexually active
54.1% of women and 22.3% of men of 18 years or less have been sexually active.
79.3% of women and 47.4% of men of 20 years or less have been sexually active.
84.6% of women and 66.9% of men of 22 years or less have been sexually active.
91.3% of women and 81.3% of men of 25 years or less have been sexually active.

This implies that Nigerian women are much more promiscous than Nigerian men of the same age (Shocked).   Please give me a minute do compose myself.  I do not know what more to say.

Why do you assume that sexual activity is a sign of promiscuity?

What if the sexual activity happens within a marriage?

There is an age boundary there? So we could isolate our opinions to those below 18 years of age, don't you think  Wink

niyyie says:

"Sadly enough, this report appears to be true as  I remember my teenagers and can still recollect everything I saw with my 'two naked eyes' (Nigerian english    )

Growing up, you suddenly saw that your age mates (girls) were blossoming into beautiful maidens. Before you can say "Kola", the older guys/men have started wooing this girls right under your nose. They woo this girls with beautiful gifts and money. They eventually go to bed with them. This girls then become arrogant and disrecpectful to their agemates. Whilst the boys of the same age are still there.

Note also that, biologically, girls mature (and become 'ripe' for sex) earlier than boys of same age. This compounds the problem.

... I hope my being explicit here is allowed, as I assume we all matured.

I rest my case."

I'm doing some extra research.  Ka's point is valid.  Wait a few mins.

I've spent a little more time analysing the results.

Comparing results from Table 6.1 (Current Marital Status) and Table 6.5 (age at first intercourse) on the report (the survey was conducted just 2 years ago), we can conclude that:

If you take 1000 random Nigerian women between the ages of 15 and 19, about 309 of them would be married, but only 489 would be virgins, which implies that 202 out of 691 single women between 15 and 19 have engaged in premarital sex (29.2%).

If you take 1000 random Nigerian men between the ages of 15 and 19, about 11 of them would be married, and 752 would be virgins, which implies that 237 out of 989 single men between 15 and 19 have engaged in premarital sex (23.9%).

Ok, so if we make an allowance for those who are married, can we women between the ages of 15 and 19 are 1.22 times (29.2/23.9) more promiscous?

How can you obtain the statistics of married womens virginity status? I wouldn't really mind knowing the methodologies used to obtain such statistics, because really i am not sure about the accuracy.

Why do we feel conflicted about sex? Isn't it the most natural desire? We do it yet we decry it as a shameful.

If I may ask, is  it only men that rape women?
according to Punch newspaper of friday, june 03 2005, 134 women was arrested for rape. but most of us think that when a woman have sex with a man with out his conscent, it is not a rape.

I looked through the report admitedly not thoroughly but I couldnt see the sample size. It would be interesting to know what the sample size and spread is. For instance, if the sample size is only 1000 then, I don't think this is representative enough for a population of over a 100 million. Likewise, what is the geographical spread of the sampling? Cities, villages, towns? Does it cut accross the north, west and the east? If only samples are taken in Ibadan, that is definitely a skewed sampling method. Can u enlighten me on this Seun

Thanks for the explanation, but please note that having premarital sex does not mean one is promiscuous. A promiscuous person has sex with many partners indiscriminately. However, you can have sex before marriage and still have it with one person only.

You're right.  What we have is a situation where a smaller population of men are having sex with a larger population of women.  The unmarried men who are having sex are having more sex, but there are less of them than the women who are having sex.

In more colorful terms, a few 'bad' men are sleeping with all the women. Tongue

@seun why is it that the female  statistics tops the male for every age range stated? sure that the study was well conducted and can the study be credited?

Why not you try reading the study yourself?  For the third time, the study in questions is available at:
http://www.measuredhs.com/pubs/pdf/FR148/06Chapter06.pdf

It includes people in rural areas of the country as well as urban areas.  1000 people participated in the survey.  I strongly encourage you to read the study.

Niyyie, you have said it all.  It's the work of nature which can't be reversed. Girls gets ahead of men in this area; that's why a girl of twenty-something, definitely, looks like an aunt to a boy of thirty-something (girls don't bluff, the truth must be said).

However, its no big deal whether girls top chart or not, what really matters is that we're all into it. Make e be.

Seun that is exactly what I have been talking about. The average girl starts having sex at the age of 15, 5 years before the average guy. Yet they pretend and form so much it pisses me off. Whenever you start going out with a babe who is no longer a virgin, she tells you you are either the 2nd or 3rd person she has ever slept with in her life. For God sake who cares if you have been with 20 just make sure that you bring that experience into the relationship, you past is of little importance to me.

Now if I wan talk here all the babes go hala say I dey too detailed meanwhile them start before me, them don do pass me, I tire o! Do you know that I had one babe who was very religious na from fellowship I dey carry am go my place where she go crash the whole weekend. I fing it very difficult to live a double life but try a babe na piece of cake..na so so form form full their life..I beg make I comot before them stone me here...

This just backs up my experience in life!

When I was young I was struggling to get any but the babes were dashing it to bigger boys!

Now as a "bigger" boy I am getting it offered to me by all these young babes that refuse to check their mates!

i have not read the report but from my little experience in life, i can't agree more.  A few bad guys are having all the girls!  The question is: do we have some of these bad guys in our little forum here?  And all the girls claiming virgins, wind go soon blow!  CalabarMan, you yarn correct.  But rather than blame all ladies, i guess it's up to guys to get to understand them better.  As soon as you can figure that, then it's a piece of cake like someone earlier mentioned.

Bioye well said

And 4 all these chicks we de claim virgin MR ADMIN I THANK U. Who SAY NAIJA NO GO BETTER. MR ADMIN u founded a site where MOST OF the girls say that they are older big babes ( some of them over 30 years according to their posts and all r still virgins Huh. Since we have a site that is full of 30 SOMETHING YR OLD "VIRGINS" which is something miraculous (Ive never seen such a conglamoration of very old "virgins' anywhere in the real world) then may be we could start acheiving miracles that would fix all the problems that naija has u know.
