soludo says the coins will be lighter than previous ones and about 60% cheaper. The cost of production for the notes has fallen by 50% too.

My concern is what the coins will actually buy.
Imagine carrying 20 or so of the coins, yet it won't even buy you say a bottle of soft drink.
the benefit then, certainly does not justify the effort. the British pence and the US cent have some values and hence makes portability sense. Remember one of the characteristics of money is portability.
I am afraid that this might end up being a wasteful idea as no one will in the end use them.

You guys make me sad.

What you guys mean is that prices of items should be in multiples of N5? Things can sell for N7, N8, N9 N11 and even N14.50k. Why are you guys whinning about N1 not buying anything? Can it buy sweet and kwuli-kwuli?

Thank you  my brother. Releasing those coins is an attempt to curb inflation.Soludo probably knows that the economic indicators show that it is practical to bring out denominations less than =N=5. Smiley. Also,in response to an earlier post i was told the notes are smaller than the current ones.

interesting. I alwayz tell people who ask me how  Canadian money looks like that is it just like the Nigerian one as in colours etc. Now, they have completed it by creating one naira and 2 naira as coins, ironically, one  Naira looks like 2 dollars here and 2 Naira looks like one dollar, love da new notes etcccc

The new naira notes are  simply off the hook! I like them.

But I wonder, did they actually make the N20 note to be that way because of the nigerian police who has that as their official 'egunje note'?

Hm, it could be!  Undecided

With polymer, no matter how they (police) fold the note,
it will spring itself out of their pocket.  Grin

just curious- is there 50kobo coin as reported by most dailies?

and how can i change my own naira to the new ones? I travelled out of the country with some wraps of N50 and N20 naira notes. Too bad, i might as well keep it as a monument- the old naira notes.

I like both the new notes and coins, especially getting rid of the arabic inscriptions on them and displaying our main three languages, Yoruba, Hausa and igbo(WAZOBIA).

Its about time we start celebrating our own culture.

Good job mr Soludo.

i really love the new notes. especially the 20 naira note. i simply don't understand all the barage of criticism the notes have been receiving. and thank God they removed the stupid arabic on it. whose idea was it to have it there in the first place?

The notes are not too bad, except that the public at large have to be well tutored and educated the need to handle the notes safetly without abuse.
