Do We Really Need Engineering Technology In Nigeria?
« on: February 14, 2007, 07:38 AM »

In Engineering we have Engineering Technicians, Engineering Technologists and Engineers.Technicians and Technologists are trained in the polytechnicsand awarded National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) respectively, while Engineers are trained in the universities and awarded BEng Degrees. With the recent plans by government to scrap HND programs and polytechnic system in Nigeria, what will happen to the Engineering technologists that are also needed in the field of Engineering?? Going by the recent plans to merge polytechnics with universities a vacuum will obviously be created, that is there would be no Technologists in the Engineering system again, everyone will become an Engineer with a BEng Degree, although they said ND programs for Technicians will still be allowed to continue but HND programs for Technologists will be abolished. Is it possible for Engineering projects to be carried out and completed without Technologists?? Don't you think this will have a negative effect in a country like Nigeria that is still trying to catch up in Engineering and Technology??
