What you all think of TV ads these days. It seem like a lot of foreign stuff is being used? Does that mean Nigerian ads are not good enough? What ads do you like and which ones do you hate?

Hi there newintexas. From the sound of it you really hate this one. Don't you find that when you see bad TV advertising it's almost like you feel they're insulting your intelligence?

Vicks Blue ads, Vicks lemon plus ad, FCMB ad, MTN Love ads (esp the one where the husband tells his wife he's working late and she sends her picture), Lux ads, Lucozade Boost cheetah ad, Guinness ads, Indomie ads,
I hate ones of poor quality and lack of concept like Binatone, Dansa fruit juice copied Hollandia's concept of a classroom ad, most bank ads where they copied Ecobank's singing choir, Intercontinental bank ad and Dabur ad. There are many but for now, i can't remember.
Nigerian ad practitioners are yet to come to that age where they will use local concept or african ideas to conceptualize their adverts. That's why you'll hardly hear of a Naija ad winning any Cannes film award or any other international award. The reason for this as well is that we are copying the western style when we should be doing our own in order to be original. I say this because i am an advertising specialist under mass comm. so i know what i'm talking about. Our advert agencies are trying but they need to be original and the picture and sound quality needs to be high.
I heard the guy who did the FCMB soundtrack's name is Fadabansi.

The Vicks blue is very Naija. However, I suppose the people in adland always think that Europe and America are the top standard. Yet, when it comes to things like fashion Africans combine things to make their own style. And they're damn proud of it! Africa is becoming the cool continent all over the world.

I like 1. All PHB ads (cars will drive themselves, cars will run on water, the impossible slam dunk and the volume control babe) 2. Malta Guiness (your mother!) 3. FCMB (Abasi ayaya) 4. Omo ( its not dirt) 5. Cussons (my bum bum is itchy) , also Vicks lemon plus (wont tell why)
I hate 1. Harpic ( She actually calls it 'apic) 2. Ariel (recycled rubish) 3. Hollandia Milk (a disgrace to classical singing) 4. Dansa (even worse than hollandia) 5. Flucor day (what nonesense) , also Guiness (i don't know why. maybe because i prefer the older)

Omo's "dirt is good" advert is cinematically alright but logically ridiculous. If dirt is good, we shouldn't wash it off!

Dirt is good in the sense that it is a mark of some achievement, especially for kids. Its is good that the girl on the advert is expressing her gardening talents at a young age. or that the boy (with his father) is showing his flair for mechanical engineering. or that the other boy is exhibiting the future of nigerian footbal. in this context, dirt is good.

I can bet the OMO 'dirt is good' commercial is Cannes-deserving, for its quality art direction. And who says the concept isn't tight? It must have taken some sort of deep thinking for one to associate filth with cleanliness. Perhaps, Seun was right to have claimed that the ad is 'logically ridiculous'. I hope he won't get shortlisted as a member of panel at this year's Cannes But can someone tell me the agency responsible for the ad? are those models Nigerians?

To Seun's point about logically ridiculous. I think what the ad tries to say is that for instance when kids play and get dirty they are really enjoying being kids and doing what kids do. We should celebrate that kids get dirty and be grateful that Omo can clean up afterwards.
