There is a lot of debate in Nigeria about the generation of sufficient energy to meet the countries needs. No one seems to be giving though to the other attendant problem of power supply. You can generate all the electricity you need but the weaklest link is in reliable supply to the consumer.
Vandalism, theft and lack of infrastructure are issues that need to be addressed too not building the biggest power generation plant ion the country

@ uspry
how much would a wind generator cost? i am looking for one for a cyber cafe so its out put should be about 10kva. please mail or reply on this post
Re: Wind-generated Electricity Energy by uspry1(f): 9:45pm On Mar 26, 2007
@ibkn

Depend on the building size, how many computer systems, copiers, lightings, and electric socket in your cyber cafe is to be fit for your needed wind generator. You have to change regular light bulb to saving energy light bulb. Air Conditioning eat up all the power if using wind generator system. (u maybe have to buy two or three wind generator)

I suggest you to have integrated high voltage/low voltage (HVLV) hybrid renewable energy package that contains:
[li]240volts AC  3kW wind-generator [/li]
[li]1.2kW solar PV panel with solar PV controller[/li]
[li]DC/AC transformer or inverter[/li]
[li]battery back up[/li]
HVLV bundle package will hook up with your existed electric utility box to generate whole electric powered running your cyber cafe business. Cost would be estimate between $2million to $6million Nigerian Naira  ($18,000.00 to $45,000.00 US dollars) with possible obtaining Nigeria micro-finance program for small business owners. I use a bundle package that is manufactured in the US.

A stand-alone small-scaled wind-generator and battery backup/inverter without solar PV system would be between $80,000.00 to $1m Nigerian Naira ($600.00 to $8,000.00 US dollar)

You can contact local Nigeria wind-generator distributor to request for price quote exactly fitting to your cyber cafe building with existed electric utility box that is found at below:

Dear All,

Interesting topic. 4play, though you may be right that renewable energy is more expensive than conventional fossil fuel energy, the real ? is expensive to whom? If you live in Nigeria, you will realize that Nigerians pay heavily for electricity. Let me use myself as an example. I pay an average monthly bill of 3000naira whether there is light or not. Add this to the cost of running my small generator (the type we call 'i pass my neighbour') at approximately 1000 per week comes to 92000 per annum. Now this is a very very conservative estimate. It doesn't consider the cost of oil, generator repairs, fuel strikes which cause abnormal price increases, health hazards, general hazards associated with storage of fuel, noise pollution etc. I believe that to Nigerians, renewable energy is not too expensive and it should be further developed. As Afam pointed out earlier, inverters are extremely useful solutions. I have one myself (that is why my generator fuel costs can be as low as 1000 per week). We need to get power to the people.

Nigeria has not been able to solve the power problem - recently our President Yaradua tacitly admitted his predecessor's failure having pumped in $10bn. Now $10bn is not small cash. All we want is constant electricity and if we cant get it from fossil fuel why not try another tactic and give it to us through renewable sources?
Re: Wind-generated Electricity Energy by Iman3(m): 3:33pm On Jan 26, 2008
@Cotton

That has nothing do with the debate. If you think your power supply is irregular and too expensive, that has nothing to do with whether the energy source is renewable or fossil based.

Would electricity be more regular in Lagos if the Egbin power station ran on solar or wind energy instead of on gas? Obviously not.

Would it be less expensive?Clearly not. Solar energy for instance,as the article I linked noted, cost 3 or 4 times more per watt generated. If instead of building a gas powered 1000MW plant for $600m,the PHCN built a solar powered one of the same capacity for $2bn,how will that reduce the cost? If you think things are expensive now, wait till the Govt start investing in even more expensive power sources.

Now,you can make the argument that if you made private arrangements for solar or inverters you will be better off.Nothing stops you from doing that but to suggest that Nigeria's power supply problems can be solved by investing in even more expensive renewable energy sources is utterly far-fetched.

Here is something for you to consider @Cotton,

Year One TOTAL POWER COST

Solar Panels , $5000
Installation, $500 ( Just in case you may need to add frames to hold the panels or you can do it yourself)
SunLight , Free

Year Two TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

Year Three TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

Year Four TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

Year Five TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

Year Six TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

Year Seven TOTAL POWER COST

Solar panels maintanance fees, $50 ( should anything happen that you even need maintainance for
SunLight , Free

, you get the idea now . Now how much more expensive is this compared to what you currently have to deal with now

I-man,

I was not suggesting that Nigeria's power problems would be solved by the govt investing in solar/wind energy directly. What I was trying to say is that solar/wind energy should be made available with incentives so that private persons can access them. Such incentives could be by way of duty exempt imports etc. There could be policies to encourage private investment in the sector.

Forgive me if my post was not clear.

We are full of ideas in this country but what we lack is implementing them. Wind, solar, hydro, thermo, nuclear sources are all areas of tested sources of renewable enegy. i guess, most developed countries have diverted from oil and are combining either of these to generate electricity.
Since we want to be developed by 20-20-20, Nigeria should follow the queue.

Wind turbines can be build in Nigeria by private investors, there is no need to wait on the FG to do it.

Hello All, this is an old post but very interested. I would like to ask, do we have enough wind in Nigeria to power small wind systems?
