BISHOP PROSPER
There once lived a Bishop Prosper Leader of poor paupers by his counsel Wise and eloquent in his teachings The fraudulent rich finds pardon If they could be cheerful givers
God loves a cheerful giver Even when all you have is meager One makes a path for plenty when his pocket he gives till empty
Never you free your soul to ponder On issues which make to wonder Nor question the saying of Prosper Lest questions fill your life of wonder
He taught the way of greatness And schooled them the way of fatness Nobility dwells in obedience The humble gives no little audience
Direct not your givings to the beggars Nor to them that have no wisdom Wisdom is profitable to direct God sends Holy Bishop to take precious offerings
By and by his barn swells loftily Beams with beans and rise with rice And his paupers faith what he taught To ask is to be given
In multitude both great and small Unstopped by no ponder To quiet the screams of their belly With bread, beans and berry
The Lord forgives you for your laziness And forgives you for your faithlessness Oh, that you had been wholehearted To till your ground unending
But of his much he gave nothing while the weak lay dying God loves a cheerful giver And not a lowly beggar.
