ATP Valencia:

Defending champion Nicolas Almagro will meet Potito Starace in the final of the ATP Valencia Open after overcoming fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura in Saturday's semi-final.

Third seed Almagro, who won his only ATP title in last year's tournament, edged victory over wildcard Ventura, finally winning through 6-7 6-4 6-4.

The unseeded Starace got the better of Spain's Ivan Navarro Pastor 6-7 6-0 7-5 in a match that lasted almost two and a half hours.

Navarro Pastor, who replaced David Ferrer in the main draw after the top seed withdrew with a back injury, took the first set on a tie break, but Starace bounced back to rip through the second without reply before clinching the decider.

Unseeded Ivo Karlovic used his booming serve to stop qualifier Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina 6-4, 6-1 Sunday to win the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships and capture his first ATP tour title.

The 6-foot-10 Croat closed out the win on his second match point, pounding in a 140-mph ace. He arched his back and clenched his fists before going over to shake hands with his coach, who was courtside.

Rafael Nadal was tested for the first time this week as he beat Italian Potito Starace 6-2 7-5 to reach the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open and extend his record claycourt winning streak to 70 matches.

The top seed was below his best and was pushed hard by the Italian world number 72 before coming through to set up a clash with fifth seed and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who ousted Argentina fourth seed David Nalbandian 7-6 6-2.

Argentina 12th seed Guillermo Canas received a walkover into the semi-finals when his opponent, Russian second seed Nikolay Davydenko, withdrew before their match because of a right wrist injury.

Should Calleri beat Hernandez, we will have two spaniards and argentines facing each other in the semis.

@viee, time will tell.

Guillermo Canas won a nearly three-hour-long battle with fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri to reach the final of the Barcelona Open, coming through 7-6 6-7 6-2.

"To be in another final is really good," Canas said.

"To play against Rafael Nadal is great. He beat me twice before, so this time I hope it's going to be different."

Top seed Rafael Nadal notched up his 71st consecutive win on clay when he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-5 6-1 to reach the Barcelona Open final.

The world number two struggled for his usual consistency in swirling winds but was too strong for Ferrer, advancing to a final against 12th seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas.

Nadal said: "This was my most difficult match of the (claycourt) season. The first set was really tough. The key to winning was to find the rhythm in my forehand.

"David is very quick and one of the best players in the world, especially on this surface.

"It was a very difficult match but it is great to be in the final for a third year."
