such a thread can not yield mature discussion, only few will be able to talk about this from a neutral stand point. I am edo so maybe that is why it is easy for me. At the end of the day why can't we think collectively? without such topics? Those doing the pointing are as bad as those being pointed at. how ironic Smiley its funny lol Fela would be saying right now in his grave look at these blind people lol he was one who saw himself first before anything as an African , then Nigerian. I loved him for that, he was rare Smiley very rare.

You right Donzman his music is Nigerian not Yoruba, lyrics maybe some, but music is the heart oof the whole shebang and it was in true African spirit.Any one who knows anything about music would tell say this.

Yoruba culture is well recognise all over the world more than Igbo and hausa, infact igbo culture came last, our igbo culture is dying out, even our names people are changing their names to western names I wonder why? look at my name ECHIDIME meaning tomorrow is pregnant, I can never change my name for any useless reason,it tell where i come from, same goes with the yoruba's they keep their names and the hausa's only igbo's are adopting too much of the western culture, especially names.

Truth is bitter by must be told as it is.

Can this girl you see here change her name to any african name?

In the same vein you do not know the amount of white people who listen to Chief Osita Osadebe or Cardinal Rex Lawson or Sir Victor Uwaifo. Admit it, your mind is playing tricks on you, you only notice the aspects of YOUR culture and disregard or ignore the aspect of other cultures present. So to you, it's the most popular when it ain't so.

Yoruba influenced religious practices is the only thing I can attest that is most popular, other than that, NOTHING.

I don't even know what traditional Yoruba music is like with the exception of the talking drum!

The only other thing popular about Yoruba is its influence on pidgin English, partly aided by Lagos being the commercial nerve of Nigeria and probably British West Africa.

I was waiting for some dumbass to bring that up and you did. Yeah Hip-Hop is English culture, it's mostly sung in English, isn't it? Huh

The only thing Yoruba about Fela's music is his ethnic background, the theme, instruments, melody of his songs are all NIGERIAN.

Maybe you should read and comprehend before looking for someone to label as a tribalist. Terracotta mentioned naming ceremony/man hunting as evidence of Yoruba influence. How true can that be when alot of African cultures do the same thing?

Yeah, if I do not agree that Yorubas have the most popular culture, I'm a tribalist. How interesting!

Give me a link of those musicians you listed and the stores that they are sold in. Fela and KSA and a few others are sold in white establishments. Infact KSA's first album is often played in Best Buy.

as for that hip-hop comment, omg. I just want to throw up on you for that statement. What the hell does Hip-Hop culture have to do with anything. Are you insane? How does that have to do with you trying to DENY that Fela is Yoruba, what is he then? Igbo? He's music if "Nigerian", lol yea ok. He's still a Yoruba man. It's ok for you to claim that Fela's music is "Nigerian" but then you want to claim Nollywood as just being of the Igbos, are you on CRACK?

You are a damn tribalist, you and osisi, else instead of destroying a simple thread with your pathetic PETTINESS, you would give LINKS and various examples of how Yoruba is NOT the most popular culture of the 3 major tribes instead of throwing around malicious comments like "oh so they are popular because of juju har har". Like I said before it's freaking pathetic that you people try to make everything into a damn competition. Get it out of your head, this thread isnt asking for the "best" tribe. ODE. Are you people really that insecure? Gosh.

you will hardly find a yoruba girl that dresses purely yoruba any where, not to talk of America lol
you wrong. The fabrics they use in america and here in the Uk are not authentic African fabrics, they are not following true Yoruba, Igbo designs, instead many including me will scout through Vogue, cosmo to find what Halle berry and co are wearing then ask our tailors to sew for us lol. Dont be too hard on what people wear Echidime, because like many things it has changed over the years and we all doing it, i am sure you do too. Cheesy

You're not that smart. I suppose Lighthouse Family is Yoruba music or D'banj's music is Yoruba, go figure.

Look in the mirror, I'm not the one propping up my culture but yet I'm a tribalist. I've lived in every major Nigerian region and I'm tribalist, you have no clue, grow up and take a look in the mirror.

All the Justinas and Radiants you see have Igbo names. We live in an English dominated society and most of the Igbos are either Anglican or Catholic which often require names like Paul and Peter during Baptism. You get names like Patrick Okedinachi Utomi. An Igbo person will tell you what you call "English" name is his baptismal name.

You have people who answer Ugochukwu at home but answer Stephen at the workplace, it's a matter of convenience and religious background.

Then you have folks like me who do not have any English names at all.

Tunde of Lighthouse Family is a Yoruba man. what is your point? No one said Fela's music is Yoruba music however he was a YORUBA musician. I'm not even "propping" my tribe. It just something that came to be. Had it been some other tribe, I wouldnt go around making up stupid comments out of envy and I don't even know why you people are envious anyway. It's NOT a competition. Re read the damn title, eyin didrin.

Now you resort to lying, you clearly said that Fela's music is Yoruba music which it wasn't. Another intellectual victory for Donzman!

A name is no good if it can't be pronounce properly. Mispronouncing names sounds awful to the ears and it loses any meaning it has, that is why it is always convenient to use your baptismal name if you have one.

I had an Angolan - Portuguese friend here whose name was Rui. Instead, he just asked people to call him Roy, why?. . .People could not pronounce Rui (with the rolling R) to his satisfaction. It's like an abuse to the name, why answer a name that will constantly be bruised and battered.

Fela's music is often sends a political message, where he uses PIDGIN to get his message across. Sometimes, he'll sing in Yoruba, but it's rare. Nonetheless, he's still Yoruba and has great influence on the Nigerian people in general.

Fela's music is a product of the NIGERIAN megaculture than the Yoruba subculture. The tribalists here will claim his music is Yoruba mucic when that is not the case, his music is wholly Nigerian.

It seems tribalists have a habit of attributing positives from a member of their ethnic groups to themselves whilst attributing the negatives to Nigeria as a whole. How convenient!

where in this sentence did I say his music is Yoruba? Terra called him a Yoruba musician, you insulted him and said his music is Nigerian, how does that stop him from being a Yoruba man? He's a musician of the Yoruba tribe.

You were backing TerraCotta which implies that you agree with him that Fela is a "Yoruba Musician". He's Yoruba but he isn't a "Yoruba musician", hopefully you're smart enough to discern the greater than subtle difference. Unless you want to tell me traditional Yoruba music is dominated by the saxophone, pidgin English, political statements about OBJ  and etcetera.

Same reason why I brought up Tunde from Lighthouse family but obviously you don't know the difference between a Yoruba man in music and a Yoruba man playing Yoruba music.

So if I ask you for example of Yoruba music, you'll point to Fela?. . . Huh
