Igbos And Foreign Names.
« on: March 04, 2007, 08:53 PM »

Why do Igbos bear foreign names.Original igbonames are now extinct. The remaining are so common;uchenna, chinedu, chukuma, chidi etc.
I need answers from igbos who are proud of themselves.

You don't have an Igbo name?. . .Ever Igbo person I know has an Igbo name so I don't know where you get this extinction talk from.

The other factor is the church which mostly require the kids to bear biblical names at baptism. So instead of the kids answering their native names, they answer their baptismal names. You get names like Pius, Charles, Timothy, Benedict. . .

I do not see the disappearance you speak of, maybe you need to associate with more Igbos or something because 99% of Igbos I know have Igbo names as first or middle names. Some answer their native names at home and the baptismal names outside.

Um NO they don't. They even go as far as making UP English names over using traditional ones eg "Maxima" in "Men Also Cry"

Ever heard of Maxima before as a name for a human? Not even the BAs go that far. Nollywood is freaking ridiculous.

I have rarely met an Igbo person without an Igbo name. This is sharp contrast to others, one Yoruba man here is known as Hubert Alberto

Prisca Soares(former MD of NICON),Col David Mark,Ben Murray Bruce,Antonio Da Silva, e.t.c

Some of these are relics from our history but it is about time that they are changed

"4 Play" is proper Igbo name Grin

this is interesting but i guess it is a misconception that igbos don't have native first names but maybe that's rightfully so.
All the igbos i know do have native names but majority of the them use english names to be called by.
I'm defintely not sure of the yorubas you know but all the yorubas i know (and that's a lot b/c I am one) have native names.  A very small few do go the igbo route and use english names to be called by.  The others use their native names but it just sounds english by the way people pronounce it and maybe we are guilty of throwing our hands up and allowing people to mispronounce our names.  hehe

funny, i was just watching a nollywood movie yesterday (When Love Dies) and two of the actors had both first and last english names: Ramsey Nouah and and some other dude with a name more oyibo than Ramsey's.  I asked my mom what was up with that and she said that they were very most likely from Ogun State.  Ogun state is where many of the slaves that were taken to the West and given English names were brought to when some slaves were taken back to Africa.  (of course i still wonder why you would continue to give yourself an english first name knowing that information but whatever).

actors and actresses act, that is their profession, they can answer anything they want.
Every one anglisizes their name outside of Naija.
I have met many Tobys that were something something tobi.
leykans that were lekan  and laras that have since thrown the omo prefix away for good.

Nnekas that are now nikki and nnennas that are nina.
I even met an Emeka that is now mike(go figure)

It's one thing to do it while in another country
I just think it's sad that these script writers can't have Nollywood hold on to their culture.
Why try so hard to be like Hollywood, do you hardly see anyone in Bollywood movies with English names?

This is very correct, but their problems at Bollywood tends to be  far deeper than mere use of names, if you are not a fair skin Indian who are by the way in heavy deficit this days,  then Bollywood is not for you, so Indians in a nutshell are not very good examples to go by .

the same could be said of black american actresses, 925  Tongue. I mean even in Nollywood, you see all these fair actresses and they can't act AT ALL. Just there as "eye candy". Lilian Bach is an example, lol her name is also a good example of the thread at hand.

and you are right about the color descrimination but I still respect their movie industry for at least keeping true to their names and language.

Yes something should be done for our identity not to be eroded, but the Indian color discrimination is too way off, any time I watch Indian films I kind have this feeling of wanting to puke, God is so visible that the people you see on the movies are not the regular Indians that lives in India, you are right also about black American's having this problem too, I think Daimon wayan is the worst of them all, check out all his sitcoms you would see he has never in history used a dark skin black woman, and that is quite unfortunate and noisome.

all the black skin color thing just makes me sick.
So those of us dark girls should disappear?

In Igboland there are men specifically out to marry light skinned wives in this day and age.
ninetofive, the indian discrimination is almost like racism,it is terrible.
light skinned girls  in India will not even marry dark skinned men unless they were some rich professionals, that's pathetic.
