What i was saying was that igbos should not destroy their language.The igbo names we have now are so common,and they all start with 'chi'(God).For example,if you are an igbo man,take a look at your surname.You would find out that names don't exist in igboland any longer.The ibos should save their culture.

@Crude oil
Names reflect a people, God and religion play a central role in our lives, that's why you have all the Chi names. What do you want someone to answer as a first name? Okonkwo? are you silly?
Haven't you heard of names like Nchekwube, Okwudili, Uzonna, Uzochukwu, Uzondu, Ndubuisi, Nwakaego, Egodi a.k.a Ego, Emenike, Ejimonye, Amara, OsitadimmaOh boy, there's nothing happening to Igbo names, you just don't know enough Igbo people or something.
Due to religion, we feel a need to reference God the great provider with every kid, Chiemelie, Chiemeka, Chidimma, Chioma, Chika, Chinecherem, ChinenyeMany things you can pair with God.

Yes,i understand what u are trrying to say Donzman.But those names are no longer in fashion for Igbo parents.They prefer to give their children foreign names rather than those names you listed above.For example you can't call your child Emenike,or Ejimonye those names don't exist these days.Understand what i am trying to say,solid igbo names names don't exist any more.

Pray,what is a solid Igbo name?On one hand you claim that Igbos use only foreign names,which is demonstrably false,on the other you suggest that what is lacking is what you call solid Igbo namesIf what you suggest is that Igbos should stick exclusively to a particular set of names,that is pointless.All over the world,names evolve amongst races and ethnic groups as more names are added to the existing pool of names.In England there was a story in the Times about how traditional names like Paul,Thomas,David were getting less popular and exotic names like Kieron or even Brooklyn were more popular. The Igbo population is quadriple what it was a hundred years ago so it is not surprising that people are finding ever more innovative names to call their offsprings.That is a natural and inevitable consequence of change

What are you talking about?. . .Emenike is my friend's name, Ejimonye is my cousin's and they're young boys. You know what my middle name is? Azubuike. MMESOMACHUKWU,MAKUOCHUKWU,OBIAJULU, NZUBECHUKWU,ECHEZONACHUKWU,SOMTOCHUKWU,IFEKWUMELU I have a little cousin named Mmesoma and a friend named Nzube. I had a classmate in sec. school named Somto, I do not understand where Crude Oil came up with this idea. Takes Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Governor of CBN for example. People who know him know his name is Chukwuma but others like to call him Charles, does not mean he doesn't have an Igbo name now Crude Oil, does it?

most ethnic groups bad mouth each other. ex. edos are prostitutes hausas are dumb igbos are 419 yorubas are cowards etc (i used to think it was just play/fun irrelevant stereotypes, but i'm not sure anymore because of the rate people get really offended and fight on this thread) many nairalanders claim Hausas are the bad ones.

I don't believe that we don't have good,meaningful names in the Igbo language but i believe that we have a greater problem in our loss of our igboness at an alarming rate. It is evident in so many ways from the fact that a lot of igbo boys and girls don't know how to speak the language,young igbo parents don't take time to teach there kids igbo language,e.t.c. My take on the issue bros is that we are loosing our identity at an alarming rate in igbo land due to the penchant to acquire westernised things which has greatly affected our language,culture e.t.c. for example i knw girls who have lovely igbo names but chose to answer names like Yvonne,susan,imelda e.t.c. nt due to the fact that they where christened at birth with such names but because they feel the names give them what i call a "HIPPY STATUS" We must have a value re-orientation within ourselves as Igbo people so as to regain lost grounds and i feel that the poeple to start changing things for us as igbo people are you and me by that i mean all we igbos on this forum

Hmm.That the women are kind of loose and the men are great hairdressers. Before they were deported en masse in the eighties,I heard most of the brothels were filled with Ghanian chicks and they beat their Naija counterparts pants hands down

when I talk of solid Ibo names, I am talking of names like Udeogu,Onwegbuakuku,etc such solid and real Igbo names are no longer in fashion for young Igbo parents because they prefer the 'Chi' names and other common names around. The igbos should emulate the Hausa people.I hardly see an Hausa man give his child a foreign name,and they speak their language fluently without mixing it with English like the Igbos do.

if that where the only issue i would even be glad bt alas that is just bt a mere scratch of the surface. The telling problem is the gradual but sustained loss of our identity to western influences. Every parent,boy and girl want to answer english names to the detriment of our igbo names also the penchant of igbo parents(mainly the young parents) not to teach there kids the language are even more serious issues that must be tackled.
