Igbos come show your proverbs skills
« on: March 07, 2007, 02:47 PM »

Igbos are well renowned for their use of proverbs or idioms in expressing themselves. Let us build a catalogue of these proverbs with explanation in English language so that other tribes will appreciate how rich our heritage is.

ihu di mma adighi nma i tu mbö - a pretty face does not deserve to be pinched

well let me continue

ezigbo ôyi kariri ezigbo nwanne - a good friend is better than a bad sibling (brother/sister)

nwata etoghi eto wara ôgôdô, ikuku kue, o blulu ya na ôgôdô ô ma n'ukwu - if an ungrown child ties a wrapper, when the wind comes, it carries both the child and the wrapper they're tying.

ônye ya na ekwensu na-eli ihe, na-eji ogologo ngazi - he who dines with the devil, uses a long spoon

ônye ndi iro gbara gburugburu na-eche ndu ya nche mgbe nile - he who is surrounded by enemies, looks out for his dear life at all times

mmadu na-azôtasi ala, wee zôba ute - you have to secure a land first before fighting for a mat to place on it

Now guess this'll do for today.   . . . . youngies, expect me back very soon Wink
