Donzman your reasoning is flawed, medical care around the world by and large is provided by the government - its not the 'best' hospital case that is material here, its the failure of the leaders to do what they have promised and been entrusted to do.

the private sector has a role, but a niche one in providing specialised servicces tailored to specific groups that want a choice or an elite level of service provision above the basic services.

Basic services for the majority of the population, as well as good enough for the leaders should be provided in govt establishments.

private sector has a role to play, but a smaller one in healthcare compared to other areas.

@donzman

which bank will give poor man loan of 20 million naira? which collateral will the poor man present. if banks give loans like that, then everyone will go for it.

this is not like OBJ who had only 20,000naira when he left jail and "borrowed" enough money to restart his farm to what it is today. he actually probably "stole" the money.

no bank in nigeria can give a poor man that kind of loan and the poor man cannot afford the kind of collateral that can settle that.

I'm sitting here wondering how people build businesses up from scratch!!. . .What happened to starting small and going big?

FALSE. Private sector has a HUGE role to play in healthcare!

huge role yes, but not the dominant role

it is the private sector that will build (by contracts given by govt) the hospitals, they will supply the equipment, but the investment must be made by govt, after which the private sector can partner in the maintenance and proper running of the facilities.

in providing niche facilities, the private sector can cater to high end clientèle

@donzman,
problem is you strongly believe heathcare delivery just like any other business. no it is not. it is special. it is very unique and a lot of consideration is done. in normal business customers come for goods and services and dealers advertise their goods/services but healthcare delivery is not like that.

in healthcare u cant even advertise precisely. have u seen a private clinic advertising on tv or radio or even bill board or saying hey we can do this and that? no. u may say hey we are urologists. full stop. u cant say hey we are the best is this and that. the clients(patients) cant even say what is best for them. the supplier(doctor) determines what is best for the customer. can u apply that to a man who wants to buy a car? tell him no,u cant buy this benz, u have to buy the toyota. no. but the doctor determines what is done. so healthcare is not your normal business. okay?

@donzman,

another point is, in normal business, the dealers have profit as thier primary aim. but in healthcare the doctor has his patients health as primary aim.(never mind the malpractice by some doctorrs). under nigerian law, the health of the patient takes precedence. if a doctor feels that a patient will benefit more from another doctor he has to refer irrespective of wether the other doctor will benefit more financially than the 1st doctor.

so bros, healthcare is very different from just ordinary goods/services. so dont treat it like any other business. like i said it is sacrosanct.

I don't think that Atiku and Yar'dua have got what it takes to improve our health care system because they are not ashamed that they have been in governemnt for the past eight years,  yet have not built a single hospital to cater  to their medical needs. I came to a conclusion that politicians do not even love themselves.

I WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM IF MY VOTE WILL COUNT

Yaradua the governor of kastina state for 6yeras or more, has been suffering from kidney problem but could not build a single hospital that can take care of his kidney problems instead he travel abroad anytime he need medicare who takes care of the bill???

Atiku a Vp for 7 years had a little bone fracture in his leg was flown abroad for medical checkup meaning he did not build a single hospital that can take care of common bone problems for his people in all his years as the VP (and he is saying he is not corrupt)

I have said it time and time again, we do not need Yaradua or Atiku to be our president. Things will just get worse.

What we need is REVOLUTION!!!

@donzman
u are obviously in a dream world. u live in the civilized world but dont reason as such. if the govt cannot provide health care what in your opinion would they be good for? u are actually advocating anarchy arent u? if i have to provide myself with electricity, security, water, health and everything else as u suggest, what then would be the point of having a govt in place?

I think this is enuff reason not to Vote for either Atiku or Yar Adua. These guys do not care about the common man. The common man must wisen up and stop voting for money, but change.  We must act now and vote good people like Pat Utomi, if not we are doomed in this country.

one last thing donzman, private individuals do not provide health care cos its not their obligation!!! got it? and it will probably do well to refrain form arguing blindly in the future.

As much as I agree with you, let me just point out that it is only God that can help us. Sometimes the people we assume that are good may not really be. These our politicians sometimes look clean in their agbada until you hear/read funny or bad things about them. Though I don't see Pat Utomi as a "politician", I read on this Nairaland that he sent his kids abroad to study saying that Nigeria is not safe. If that is true, isn't that funny? This is the same person that expects you to cough out millions to enrol in Lagos Business School o. I don't have anything against him o but all I'm saying is that we the masses should keep praying that God should choose the best person for us.

Interesting arguments, But I still insist that Its embarrassing for Nigeria's Leaders'' to fly out just to fix stuffs, which on a good day wud be possible in Nigeria, as far as am concerned, its all flamboyancy on there part and a waste of the country's resources, anyways, God dey and he's watching them,d day way him go vex**********

i hope you guys will all be mature in your posts. I really do expect post that dwell on the quality of hospitals in Nigeria. OBJ spent about 17 bilion to equip some 8 or so teaching hospitals but yet these guys still go abroad for check up. Are they not sure of what they did. Can't they equip Aso clinic like the one they visit in germany and also import the white doctors as a show of patriotism. How much does it cost. If these guys do not care about Nigeria welfare at that level , why should the ordinary man be. NO HOPE
