doctors are not the total cause of the  problem in hospital buy they are the cause of the rot in the health sector,eg when they need to open a medical laboratory blood bank in one hospital in a state in naija, they made a medical doctor the head of the comitee, no lab scientist involved at all, they went bought useless equipment and came back, then they looked for the most senior med.lab scientist to do the signing and the man refused.they used ministry of health to harras the poor man, they set  up a panel for him found him guilty and wanted to sack him,but he still refused, later they left the man,but posted him to a remote place where he retired this year.

now this has to do with life, if the equipment is not okay ,somebody will die, cause wrong blood etc.
Doctors are not the only one that are attimes nonchalant, have u gone to these politicains office,u can see obama easily than see them, what of what is happening in our police.what of lecturers that use research money to marry 3rd wife, buy houses, etc.

when we change this country all these rubbish will stop, i tell you very soon a fidel castro, jerry rawlings will appear, this have been my prayer.it will come to pass

Narrow mindedness at its peak, whatever is being talked about we must just blame doctors!
Such tunnel vision bespeaks questionable literacy.
It shouldnt be a wonder why doctors that seem not to work well back home do so well in other places allover the world, i mean come to the UK and you'll meet fantastic nija docs , same with the US, saudi arabia, UAE, the list is endless!
That just goes to say the problem in Nigeria is insttitutional.

@ reindeer
Doctors are not to blame for everything but they aren't blameless too and i see no reason you should open your stank to insult GREAT NIGERIANS.

I was wrongly operated on at Nigerian Navy OJO(DOCTOR OMALE) hospital AND I also didn't get a proper surgery at CHRISTIANA SPECIALIST HOSPITAL OWERRI (DOCTOR AMAECHI). I was only 11-13 when i had these surgeries.

I am ashamed of the murderers called Nigerian doctors.
Most times when they don't know shit bout an ailment, they claim and act like they specialise on that.

GOING AS FAR AS RAPING KIDS???

Medical students sort (pay lecturers to pass) their courses.

SHAME ON NIGERIAN DOCTORS.
SHAMMMMME

My dear, nobody ever said doctors were blameless, nope, that will be preposterous.but for everything wrong in the sector being ascribed to docs is just wrong.
If you have any grouse with any doctor, its simple approach the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and seek redress, many docs have faced panels there and lost licences ok? so your unfortunate experiences will not be a representative of the whole system, that will be hasty generalization. You should seek justice no matter what, i personally never condone malpractices and negligence and whichever doctor is found guilty should be punished.
Now lets leave childish dislike and face issues here, every sector in Nigeria needs re engineering and that can only be achieved if people truthfully faced issues and not express petty dislikes and envy.
constructive discussions are always welcome but when you make statements like 'pharmacists dont know what they are doing' or 'doctors dont know about ailments' it just shows a laziness in thinking through before talking.
Such generalizations are better left for high school kids.

Only God  can save us from the cruel hands of the so-called doctors.

They would perform operation and later tell you there was a mistake and the patient would be charged for another fee for their (doctor's) negligence.

Whats wrong with these ones? Its only Drs mistakes they'll see.
@oluschen, if you had a problem with your left testis and a Dr removed the right one and thus you had to loose both then too bad! It happens, even in the US of A and ikennahill's precious Ghana. You should've sued the Dr, now lack of testosterone is making you talk rubbish on a public forum.

@reindeer, don't mind these detractors. Hardly anyone appreciates Drs for the little or big things. Most
people only know they exist when they are ill or when there's a strike.

Abeg, ive given up on people who seek someones error just to say something bad about them as if errors are limited to doctors in this world.
May i suggest that the next time such  people have issues they shouldnt come to nairaland to whine but seek redress through the Courts or the medical and dental council of nigeria.
And to the guy who may have lost testosterone, hahahahahahaha! Grin

That is so true! And that is the same sorry state of the nation called Nigeria.
I believe given the right equipment and inducements, Nija doctors are among the best in the world, this is evident by their accomplishments world over.
the same people who go on strike in Nigeria work in exemplary fashion outside, thats to tell you the problem is not with them but with the system.

The Nigerian hospitals and the services they provide is a reflection of the systemic failure in all sectors of the Nigerian service industry.

Where there is no system in place, then anything goes. In countries where the health sector is flourishing, you would find that other systems also work (transport, power, security, education  etc). So those who prefer to single out the Doctors for ridicule, are just poorly informed people gropping for others to blame other than the true culprits. You see, to blame is really ourselves for not holding those that were supposed to put the systems in place, accountable for their gross incompetence and negligence.

Nigerian Doctors are ordinary Nigerian citizens who have been called out to perform miracles within the boundaries and limitations of the Nigerian society. They are called to make state-of-the art diagnoses with no equipments; to peform state-of-the art operations with inadequate training. Nigerian Doctors are being called to be perfect, blameless, altruistic and well mannered on empty stomachs, while trying to survive a society that hardly respects or understand the challenges and the burdens that are thrust upon them.

So, those that are so eager to call the Nigerian Doctor incompetent, heartless and the so many other uncomplimentary names, should pause first and take a long look at themselves in the mirror. Because the person you are calling names, is really yourself, for not doing anything about our collective shame.
