lol chill out boo. get the original cd boot it up and navigate to the repair option, or you could try system restore. you might want to check you hardware, and how equiped your pc is to run vista in my opinion anything with a vista reating higher that 1.5 is a waste of time because it will continously give you trouble. so if your vista rating is more than 1.5 swich back to xp folk till service pack 1 comes out !!!!!!!!!!!

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=233 when i mean last major release i meant last for a long long time the next editons of windows like windows 7 would be major upgrades to vista and not a major window release, for example the last major release before vista was windows 98,every other OS that came after were just major upgrades.even xp, but vista is diff its a major release due to the radically new stuffs in the area of security which is a complete diff from former windows, gui and other features addup but what clearly makes it a major release is the whole new security framework that was built with vista which is unprecedented in windows, MS themself always term it as a major release, but windows 7 is just goin to be an upgrade. http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/windows_7.asp although he said vista wont be the last major update for windows, it is clear from his statement that it would be quite some time beforeMS come out with another major release, about the name, the real and only name of the next release in windows 7, and blackcomb where formerly used but now the official code name is windows 7, http://dotnet.sys-con.com/read/408802.htmor http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=233 i shall construe the definition of "major release", in the context you use it, as meaning "pre-release hype, marketing, and launch fanfare". every windows version, be it a "major release" or an "update" is an update of the previous one. win98 was an update of 95, 95 was an update of 3.11 etc. in effect, 2000 was the major release because it brought about so many changes and radical developments and marks the attempt to say goodbye DOS than 98. xp and vista are updates of 2000. winME was an update of win9.x thats the whole point of development: updating. microsoft created a lot of marketing hype because they know its going to be hard uprooting folks from xp. in any case, windows 7 IS a major windows version/release/update. here is your quote Q: So is Windows 7 going to be a major Windows version? A: Yes, besides he said: "and Windows 7 will be also be a major update." notice the ALSO? and he further said: "Microsoft is currently on a development path where every other Windows version is a major release, so it's possible we'll see a minor OS update between Vista and Windows 7." EVERY OTHER OS. meaning windows 7 since there is a stopgap coming after vista. "minor os update BETWEEN vista and windows 7" windows 7 will be ready in time as yukon, so perhaps the file system will be updated away from NTFS, and that is a major release.

the higher the rating, the better equipped you are. @dakmanzero. i don't think intel Xscale series processors are too bad. at least for once we can overclock our phones. my XDA 11i runs at 520mhz and it overclocks to almost 700mhz. and now ARM chips come with 3d accelerator chipsets.

yukon is out already = sql server 2005
as for major/minor windows versions, don't confuse yourselves people. look at the version numbers.
windows 3.0: major
windows 3.1,3.11: minor, 386enh and networking upgrades
windows 4.0 (windows 95): major - protected mode shell, protected mode drivers, preemp. mttasking, shell rewrite
windows 4.1(98) 4.1.2222(98se) 4.2(me): minor. ie integration, stability update then real-mode backbone update.
windows 5.0 (2000): also called NT 5.0, major - EOL to 4.0 codebase and dos, repurposed NT codebase for home/smalloffice use.
windows 5.1(XP) 5.2 (server 2003) : minor- shell update releases, funct. updates mainly
and now vista, which is called windows 6.0 offers a near complete rewrite of the whole stack and for the first time the shedding of loads of legacy code (hence the mass breakage of backwards compatibility).
vista IS a major upgrade no mistake.
I just think that it doesnt serve my purposes. its major feature, security, is irrelevant to me.

yes. and the number of things i lose for that extra security is too high
- drm and multimedia controls mean i lose control of my media - extra code for security features means i lose speed/performance - glossy shiny interface means i lose RAM and speed - all those speed losses mean I lose whatever speed gains the rearranged interface gives - poor backwards compatibility means i lose access to features of my hardware and software
lose, lose lose.
In the future, PCs will be faster and will have more RAM- enough so that the productivity improvements finally become relevant. At that point dx10 will finally be relevant because its feature upgrades will not come with a terrible speed penalty like they do today.
Also, by then, all hardware will be compatible, and all non compatible software will be irrelevant/emulatable.
At that point, I will be able to stomach the messed up multimedia support, and move to vista. Until then, xp is finet, thank you.
Besides, Linux has better security than vista already, and better multimedia support. In short, I'd rather MS just rolled the new interface and features into XP and forgot all the security bullshit. Security is soooooo yesterday's news, everyone that matters already has some form of nat/router firewall and proper access controls in place.

i just gav my ubuntu some OSX love, , quit whinig and go install mac osx on your PC it works, i am running the OSX leopard beta right now on a vista capable pc. moving from windoze to mac is like moving from fry pan to fire, like i said earlier mac is complete evil, at least in windoze the only thing that is not open source is the OS with mac everything is unopensource, the os and the hardware, i wander what makes it beta than windozes not to talk of linux, don't even go there, You CAN NEVER COMPARE linux to mac, YES COMPARING TO WINDOWS IS UNDERSTANDABLE BUT DOING THE SAME TO LINUX IS CRIMINAL, what makes mac looks, stability, security, all this things are all in UBuntu and lots more infact head to head a mac system can't even stand linux in looks-right now as long as computer is concerned ubuntu linux and other distros like fedora, suse etc are the definition of eye candy, u just need to see linux composite in action, stabilty on my ubuntu is legendary not a single crash i=since i started, what about security, well u know macs is built on UNix and unix is linux, added to all these is the fact that ubuntu is FOC as in free, if u even request for a cd, it would be sent to u free of charge , i requested for Feisty fawn cd and it was delivered to my doorstep byTnT currier, can that happen with Mac, ? i wontt say more, u have google

@ bigrovar you don't know what your talking about, and they all run perfectly well t really? yet u (that seem to know what u are saying) have not addressed one of the issues i highlighted like security, stability and GUI, for your infor i ahve Xp installed on my system and it runs very smoothly, like i said before, MAC OX is a watered down version of linux, if u want the real thing get linux and i honestly don't care what you say mac osx is more supiror ok then i take it that u are one of those MAC fan boys that have closed your eyes to any constructive arguement, unless it end s with MAC IS KING. soo in that way i wont try bring u to reason, since like u said NOTHING CAN CHANGE UR VIEWS. if run mac osx lepoard beta on a pc or osx tiger you will be amazed at how somoothit is, , i can switch to windows vista /windows xp/linux in a single click of a button really oh that is great , but u know in linux that is standard not even something to brag about infact its like a birth right, i have over both vista and xp installed on my UBuntu, (although i had to remove vista), by the way my friends run mac and i can is the envy in their eyes when there see me runs things in my ubuntu that they can't even try on their mac, the fact that u can install ubuntu on almost anything from pda to ipods,psp,ps3 and xbox just shows that with open source nothing is impossible, oops i forgot MAC IS KING since it seems that is the only thing that u want to hear. his is the future of computing. i t is just a matter of time before apple realease an official osx for pcs and when they do it will sell !!!!!!!!!!! hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe u make me laugh, even Steve and Gate know that the future of computer is opensource, abi is mac opensource? don't even go there, and by the way MAC has been ranting about a PC version of OSX for soo long that people have stopped listening, even if it does happen , so what, he is just a late comer to what has been a norm.

XP
Actually the Vista ready machine in my study is no different from an XP after a 2 days use I desided to do some petty tweaks . No more flashy looks and since I am a heavy user and not a gaming freak I had to block alot in the Windows. Then later reinstalled XP and removed the Vista since my work is not about beauty it is about effectiveness.
Funny enough, the I did the same to MAC OX and Linux. I am not a flashy guy, am always about speed but they don't. All them flashy operating Softwares just makes me sick. Although I posted some thing to make your Desktop and Progs look good in my forum but I am not that kind guys
I am after smooth and slk.
I am still looking forward 5 or more years with XP since you can always get more for XP. To me it seems to be all purpose.
I am still looking forward to the Windows 7
If it is not good I guess I will look for another option.
I am planning on building myself a Quad Core workstation and XP Pro is still my choice
XP is just perfect

@ bigrovar plus you can't run xp natively, thus you use a virtualization program, which any os can use even windows running power pc. though macs can run linux and windows nativeley. and communication with windows pcs is a huge ass pain, when working with linux. and the insallation isn't straight foward, i had to edit a number of configorations in order to run it.

Young_15 you are talking about 10 years ago. ubuntu installs with almost no configuration- smoother install than even windows. I can attest to that. Not every linux is fedora on the new macs, the only 'native' running of XP is via boot camp, which is plain old dual booting. from inception, linux has been 'capable' of this. i put capable in quotes because its a hardware feature NOT an OS feature. Until recently, macs have not run on intel, which is why mac freaks think its something new. PC users have been doing this since the nineties. Finally, linux runs on BOTH ppc and intel, and a host of other architectures. xp and mac are limited to a few architectures. In short, you can run linux anywhere, even on a mac. even on an old ppc mac. Not so for mac os. the mac os does not install on non-macs. so young-15, it is the MAC that is deficient in that regard. * communication with windows systems: ok , young-15 you are either seriously uninformed or just spreading lies. Linux doesnt even need to use samba to communicate with windows systems. CIFS works transparently without the user even knowing. Modern linux acceses windows shares and domains with NO PROBLEM and even supports ntfs which MAC does NOT. Stop talking out your arse
