Whatever. You guys are acting as if black americans are a special breed black, when in fact they look just like regular africans albeit mixed. Makes you wonder just how ugly we must think we are especially compared to a girl like Ashanti who looks like just any regular Igbo girl.

We African-Americans also do not like to bereferred to as "wild Beasts", so please do not refer to us as "Akatas". We are not Akatas.

akata most definetly does not mean wild beast.
Yes it does. In direct reference it actually refers to a "WILD CAT" which in extended acknowledgment of the term boils down to "WILD BEAST" as it was meant to be used in its original reference to African-Americans back during the Nigerian Colonial period when the term became a popular use for referring to African-Americans. It's use was spawned from stories told by the British Colonizers and their white American cousintry in the land, painting the African-American as "violent, "volatile", "lawless" "((BEAST))". This was told to them so that they would not want to know and or associate with us, and just the same--- we were told similar stories about Africans, so that we would not want to know and or associate with Africans back on the continent. The term is a Yoruba one, and was addressed to the African-American in regards to the (( BLACK)), ((BEASTLY)) nature in which the whites presented us in. This in time broke down to us being thought of as general "Black Beasts" and in common Yoruba way, they made common reference with that terminology to "Black Panthers" in which they broke down for even greater ease to just "Wild Cats" or "AKATAS", and in time just like "NIGGER" gradually molded into the more accepted, and circumstantially addressed term of "NIGGA", in which could be used negatively and or in a general non-meaningful manner amongst us African-Americans, so has "AKATA" amongst Nigerians over the years. You should not use the word if you do not know the history of its use and meaning. It's just as bad as saying "Nigga". Folks will swear up and down that it's not the same as saying "Nigger", but it is and it carries the same meaning and history. HOW IS IT THAT I, AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN, KNOWS THIS AND YOU NIGERIANS DON"T?

exuse me but you are wrong because i did my research for a class project. akata is not even nigerian. it made its way into the nigeria vocab. it means a cat that doesnt' live at home like a stray cat. so by calling african americans akata, it basically refers to a black person that doesn't reside or come from africa. because in case you too don;t know, we sometimes call caribean people akatas but not all the time.

I don't know who told you that lie, but you need to stop believing it quickly. Everybody with any type of even general knowledge of the Yoruba language knows that Akata is a Yoruba word derived out of Nigeria.

HOW IS IT THAT I, AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN, KNOWS THIS AND YOU NIGERIANS DON"T? if you don't speak Yoruba, I wonder why you're so sure of the origin of the word akata. In Yoruba, "Cat" is called "Ologbo". The similarity of the word " akata" and " cat" does not automatically mean akata is a Yoruba derivative. It seems closer to English than Yoruba. Many Japanese words are also similar to some African languages. This doesnt mean akata is a good word, but you need to check your sources before assuming things. Akata could be any other language. The K in akata could be a corruption of the Q sound from any language. Language evolves, like everything else. There is no 100% assurance from any quarter that the word akata is Yoruba. You hardly know the language, but you're so convinced you're an authority.

You hardly know the language, but you're so convinced you're an authority. how the hell is this hero guy going to tell me what akata means. i'm/we're the ones that are nigerians. we know. he's the akata trying to tell me about my roots and my country. i should be telling him about his roots since i know where i came from.
