Slave Trade Justified?
« on: March 24, 2007, 11:27 AM »

I was listening to a phone-in radio program here in the UK and they were discussing the topic
"should the UK government apologise for the role of Britons in the slave trade?".

There were a lot of responses and most of them felt it is past and they don't need to apologise. However, one response caught my eye and it goes thus:
"We should bring the slave trade back as this will ensure that the problems of drugs, street gangs and all these card frauds can be eliminated".

This was very shocking to me and I started wondering what it is that blacks in the UK have done to deserve such an opinion from a white Briton? Oya, UK peeps especially, and all Naija peeps wetin una think?

What do you expect , if the British Blacks are the greatest ass kissers, if you don't have any respect for yourself nobody would accord you any respect, a layman filled with racist thoughts would think is easy to go about enslaving people in 2007.

No sane person thinks the slave trade is justified, but this is not something the government needs to apologise for.  We are not responsible for the sins of our ancestors, neither are we worthy to recieve apologies for them.

Seun,

the proponents of apology say that though the current citizens were not responsible for the slave trade, they are currently enjoying the fruits of the slave trade. They say cities like Bristol and Glasgow were built on the proceeds of the slave trade. So if they can enjoy the benefits, they should be able to shoulder the responsibility. Abi?

No, they should not.  Some of the current beneficiaries of slave trade are blacks.  Thanks to slave trade, and the struggles of their forefathers to be free, they are American citizens instead of improverished Africans.  Must they also apologise?   What about those whose black forefather aided the white slave traders and used the proceeds to take care of their own clans and families and left their land to their descendants?  Must they also apologize?  Is there any one of us that hasn't benefited from barbaric acts of war that took place in the past?  Must we all be apologizing?

We must forget about the past and hold on to the present.  Children are not guilty because their fathers sinned.

If the slave traders did not steal all that was good there, there would be no need for any of those people to be American citizens. Perhaps Americans would be the ones struggling to become African citizens for economic reasons.

I agree with this part of the post

We will never know if this is true, but I greatly doubt it.  We would still be fighting each other, as we are now.
