While I pesonally believe religious and ethnic factors play out in Nigeria's political system, I believe it is exaggerated. I have lost an election in the past because of religious affiliation, but that has not made me to believe that I could not have defeated my opponent if I was far better than her. If I was so better than her, that may have overridden religious consideration.

I find it hard to believe Bankole's 'persecution' has religious undertone or if at all it has, I'm not convinced that's the sole or main reason the so-called progressives are after his seat.

Let him clear himself of the allegations first.

The trend is Nigeria is worrying. All any thief that is caught needs do is to shout 'It's because I'm a Muslim, It's because I'm a Christian, It's because I'm Hausa, It's because I'm Igbo, It's because I'm Yoruba' and you will see people line up behind him/her even if caught red-handed with the loots.

Same thing Nigerians said about Sanusi but the story is the same in America. There's are: It's because I'm black or hispanic or jew or woman or Arabian or Mormon or Muslim etc. But the difference here is that there society is far too advanced and secular than ours and it will be difficult to get people who will queue behind you in large numbers without one person asking questions.

He was a slimy young ba/stard . The son of an ex political looter must be green with evil like his dad. Thanks for the info. I also thought he attended Oxford university according to his resume. I don't know why our leaders lie about their academic qualification as if they will be chosen by how many degrees they possess. Obasanjo does not have a university degree yet the North imposed him on Southerners. Its like Omisore who claims to have a masters degree in industrial Engineering from a British university yet he was chilling at Osun during that period.

As the ultimatum given to him by some members of the House of Representatives to resign or be disgraced out of office expires today, Dimeji Bankole, the Speaker says he is not moved by the renewed threat to his position.



Mr Bankole said the plot to remove him was normal, part of the challenges public office holders are usually confronted with, and that he had always prepared for it. He spoke yesterday morning with journalists in Abuja shortly before travelling to Russia on an official assignment.

A group of 10 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers who styled themselves ‘Progressive Members' of the House last week gave the Speaker seven days to resign or be disgraced out of office. The lawmakers, who brandished documents alleging corruption against Mr Bankole, said at a press conference, that they will be forced to make the documents public if the Speaker does not relinquish his office at the expiration of the ultimatum.

But the embattled Speaker said that since he assumed office, he has always been conscious of handling financial matters, which is why he upholds the rules of the House, guiding the funds of the lower chamber.

Bankole prays against impeachment

Mr Bankole stated that he is also not disturbed by the threat made by the 10 lawmakers to send the documents to the anti-graft agencies, contending that the documents being referred to have since been with the Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS), as well as the Presidency.

According to him, most of his colleagues were not aware that he had personally invited the EFCC to investigate some of the documents meant to be used in blackmailing him, long before now, and that the EFCC chairperson, Farida Waziri once visited his office on account of that.

"The day Mrs Waziri came to my office on my invitation to investigate some of the documents, you will recall that the story was twisted when a newspaper slammed the headline the following day with a caption: EFCC quizzes Bankole. Even the EFCC was alarmed and had to do a retraction immediately," the Speaker said.

Mr Bankole said he would not interfere with the investigation by the EFCC and the ICPC, neither will he pre-empt its outcomes on the N2.3 billion alleged car scam because the documents on the matter were forged by those he described as "smart crooks" itching to nail him at all cost.

He added that he has nothing against any of the "Progressive Members" even though their allegations have dented his image. He said that apart from being his personal friends, the lawmakers are those he has close affinities with. He, however, said that the real reason why they are making the allegations will soon unfold.

The scandals

Mr Bankole asked Nigerians to remember that the law places limitations on the amount of money he can approve as Speaker, stressing that it is only the management of the National Assembly that could approve an amount as huge as N2.3 billion, though with a resolution by the House.

The Speaker explained that when the issue of purchase of cars for members came up, he ensured that he did not act alone, stressing, "I took the matter to the House, which in turn took a resolution that the management should handle the process."

On the N5.2 billion Rural Electrification Agency (REA) scandal, the Speaker said neither he nor any member of his family was a beneficiary.

According to him, those who took the contract with fictitious names are already in EFCC custody, just as he challenged the media to approach the commission or other anti-graft agencies for further clarification.

The Speaker explained that he has refrained from commenting on the matter all along, believing that the truth would be known someday. He added that one of the alleged culprits, Ndudi Elumelu, the former Power Committee chairman in the House, has already denied the involvement of any of his family members. He stated that he stopped his family from going to court over the matter.

Mr Bankole said as soon as he assumed office, he prepared for the worst, especially when it was alleged not to have served the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
