Which American accent do you want to imitate?  There are so many and various dialets.  You have various accents.  I met a man the other day.  I knew he was a southerner, but not an Alabamian.  He was Texan.  He is white.  He has that redneck, white trash accent.

A Lousianian has various accents within that state.  Do you speak Cajun, creole, proper, or one the black dialets that is mingle with creole.  So you have to decide what region and people you want to imitate.

I must stay that Naijas sound and look so stupid when pretending to be something they are not.  But if looking stupid is you thing.  I say go for it.

By the way, for those of you who are uninformed, which seems like all, there are various black accents and dialets.

uyia,

I guess that would make all Naijas idiots, because I don't know one that doesn't speak pidgin - bad english.  Furthermore, all the Naija I associate with are educated. Dumb ass I have enough sense to know when to change up the way I talk.   I am so proud of Black American venacular, we set the trends not only for the US, but the world.  We create, and y'all imitate it.  You are just mad because we are God's chosen and the world's innovators, and you are so insignificant.  You know you don't exist in world - the black American world.

I can see why you are still third world.  You don't create anything yourselves.  You are just poor imitators.

@ big sis, your tone is  like a typical African American woman. You have so much anger inside you with due respect, take it out on someone else.

Educated Nigerians use pidgin English. WE know when to use it and when not to use it. I don't know how many times i've been embarrassed at a meeting because one of your people does not know how to speak English. I do not need to tell you about nigerians, YOU BEING ON THIS SITE SAYS IT ALL.

@ bigsis, you have no right to even open your mouth. You guys are some of the most uneducated individuals. when you do decide to go to college , it is for basketball and football. if that fails then everyone goes to their basement to do rap. Nigerians are the most smart and educated blacks on the planet. We are the BLACKS in all the prestigious USA colleges. A report was just made on this issue by PRINCETON. It is your e\country but WE are the ones using your resources. YOU know about that, that is why you are here. SO do not insult us. YOU should be proud to be in our midst.

our pidgin english is spoken by all (educated and uneducated) just so you know. we can revert to real good english whenever we choose.we speak our pidgin among ourselves. feels good. You are proud of your black american vernacular (which white people don't appreciate by the way!  Undecided. they think its real GHETTO)but ours you think is bad english? doesnt make any sense to me.  Huh

1. the first thing i looked up was your name on your profile. If i'm not mistaken SUNMOLA is a YORUBA name (one of my college mates had that surname!), that automatically makes you a Nigerian who is masquerading as an American simply because she has been granted the priviledge to hold a blue passport by her white masters.

2. You're proud of ebonics? REAL educated black Americans don't speak that way. It is meant for ghetto, gangsta wannabes.

3. Pidgin is bad english? At least we are proud of it!

4. Black Americans set the trend for the "whole world"?  Grin Grin In what areas? Drug dealing, gangsta rap filled with violence and vile language? In being the largest percentage of occupants of US prisons? In being the shame of the black race during the Katrina episode?

5. In what areas are black americans God's chosen?

6. World's innovators in terms of what?  Shocked World innovators of baby mama's, gangstas, burger flippers and welfare dependents?

7. Of course we don't exist in the black American world, it is impossible to exist in a vacuum! In your own very country all you have is one month to celebrate your "history"? Have you asked your white neighbours what they think of your place in the development of America as a whole?

8. Of course you are not third world. At least you can be "grateful" (ala Mohammed Ali) that your ancestors where "priviledged" to be among the few who had their necks shackled in iron and bundled off as slaves to plantations!

9. What have you achieved in your own country? Virtually all the top scientists i know here are white and Asian!

American accent is easy to learn. Just Talk through your nose and add enough swear words to your speach like

-Sh*t
-Mother***er
-Damn (pronouced DEUM)

change all occurences of "want to" to "wan na".
All "going to" to "going to"
Sprinkle in enough "you what am saying" (pronouced : Yno waram sayin)
refer to people by making reference to their "arse" eg "Am g o n n a to kick your arse" means "I will kick you"
Use the word DUDE to refer to your friends
Finish the makeover by adopting a swagger like a hip hop artiste.
Wear track suits always with the most expensive sneakers you can lay your paws on.
My guy, everyone will think you are from yankee.

@ Topic, what you want is the nigga accent, forget the White boy shit

I'll start with some tips.
Picture yourself as a fearless Thug, you don't care what people think about you, you're too cool to listen to opinions

**Always put emphasis on silent letters, for example pronounce Car____Curr
**Never pronounce The(Dee), always say The(Dar)
**Use terms such as ride(Car), Paper(Money) Cap(shoot), Crib(House), Turtle|ZigZags(Marijuana)

Remember to always stress the words, overtime you'll get used to it and it won't sound forced.

There are many Thug accents, so find the one that suits you best.

**Instead of saying "what have you being up to Mate"
**Say "Wattup Ma Nigga", or "Wattup ma Nikker", or "Wattup Witchu"
**Remember to pronounce words with the rhythm dee--dee--dee--dee--da
**Putting emphasis on the last syllable and on the silent letters
**Use Mayne|Dawg|Homies to refer to your friends or acquaintances
**As much as I hate to say this, you have to swear alot aswell, use words like Mutha F**ker and Punk ass Nigga
Or punk ass Bitch, or Bitch ass Punk. Combine household terms like Tapes, Caddy, Bling with these words.
**You should try and mimic people like 50 Cent and other AA Thugs, mimicing AAs like Eddie Murphy is a waste of time,    becuase they have intergrated into western society and have lost a lot of their culture and feel.

To have a much greater capacity to understand the phonetics of the African American Accent, view Black American shows and Try to subscribe for BET(Black Entertainment Television)

I'll keep you updated, and remember Put Emphasis on letters that you wouldn't usually pronounce

Todays Sentence
I'm gon cap your Punk ass if u don't move your ass out of ma face fool

(With Emphasis)
I'm gon cap your Punnnk ass if u don mueve your arssss outtar ma face fuel

I'd like to add that one of the most annoying things I have seen is a naija guy with a heavy local accent trying to speak in British cockney accent. Its worse in those ones who have spent donkey years here and all of a sudden discover they are talking to a JJC. My brother, its pathetic and terribly tormenting to the ear drums. Once you did not learn these accents growing up, the most you can do is a fake unconvincing mimic.

can we stop being self-righteous for a sec?
The african immigrants in prestigious American colleges come from all over Africa not just Nigeria and they are usually sons/ daughters of already educated or wealthy people who moved to the US or send their kids to the US.
trust me, I hang out with immigrant Nigerians (I'm one myself) too majority of them are in community colleges. It's usually the sons of lawyers, teachers etc that end up in Princeton etc.
let's not kid ourselves. Don't you think Nigeria would have been the best country in the world if what you said was true that we're all educated etc?
plus most nigerians/ africans and blacks in general in my school play sports too. lol

no insults please

"everyone goes in their basement to do rap" can also be translated in the nigerian language to "everyone goes to the cafes to do 419" yeah stereotypes are everywhere. I met some really outstanding black americans, so lets not generalize.

ebonics is to communicate just as nigerian pidgin is to communicate. yeah both are considered to be used by illeterates.
ebonics originated with african americans that are secluded in the ghetto. obviously their dialect will be diferent from the mainstream. african americans who don't live in the inner cities etc usually don't speak ebonics.

I won't advice anyone to go learn ebonics though. unless they don't want job prospects or unless they're moving into the innercity etc (it's advicable to learn ebonics if you want to survive in these areas).

@ wesleyana you do not get the point.

she was talking about nigerians that is is why i replied with that. Of course other africas are there too.

not only sons of lawyers go to prestigious school. if you are smart and you have  agood GPA the schools come looking for you. There is nothing wrong with community college. when all is said and done it is what you study that matters not where you went to. A nurse with a degree from a community college will make more money than a person who read psychology in princeton. point made. she started the insult first on the wrong website!!!!!!!!!!

Hey yicob, I've got one for you!!!

In the North, we pronounce the word water -- "waaatah", & below the Mason-Dixon line -- "wartar". Some people like to pronounce it like "woughter" as in daughter.

So, there goes your first step in transforming your dialect from "wota" to any of those 3,
