Why do people say a male child is better than a female child .is it because it is the male child that happens to bear the name of the father or what

That's exactly what you should have asked those "people" who said that.
Ask them what is being infered by the term "better"
How is betterment measured.
Ask them about the relationships between gender and who is "better"
etc,

I disagree that a male child is better than a female child especially if no proofs are provided.
