@niyoo Congrats! CFA? Ain't that nice. Very audacious step to improve oneself. But tell me, do you have a Finance (or Accounting) background? Do you work in a Finance environnment already? I ask this 'cause I am currently in a crisis of figuring out what professional exam that may take my career to the next level. I've worked in the telecoms environ or almost 4 years now, basically in commercial job functions like Customer Care, Sales, Marketing etc. Now I'm basically involved in Corporate Accounts Management, International Corporate Sales & Business Development all rolled into one. My concern is that the above job funtions do not have any credible certification to back it up just like the Accountants have their ACCA and/or CFA. Or perhaps, i do not know of any So I've been groping around seeking for a reliable professional certiication to give me a shot beyond earning salary Anyone with suggestions? @Alfaprime I didn't comment on your initial post of work-life balance 'cause I was not yet ready to talk then. But my submission is the same I had the first time I read it. I am in an industry where I work 8am-5pm. Notice that I hadly submit any post after 5pm? Right! That is because I do not joke with my out-of-office time. I leave the office immediately it is time to go home. No sentiments attached. Hence I try to finish as much as I can before closing time ( work no dey finish na?!) So I guess that I am not in your category. Even at that, I have to beat Lagos terrible traffic. Usually gets around my area between 6pm or 6:30pm. But alas! A greater part of my off-office time is either spent in church (weekly church programs), making me often get home by 8:00pm Or when not attending a weekly church program, I herd straight home to watch one of my classic movie collections! I hadly go anywhere else beyond work and church. So I guess I lead a triangular life! (or is it point-to-point lifestyle? ) Lol! @Kuwena I didn't really want to be the first to respond to your series of 'humility' posts. I guess I have generated way too much controversy with you on the thread already. However, I think that Alfa's post on the issue unties my tongue. I share the same view with his. I've gone through the Bible several times and through some bits of history studying the lives of notably & presumably humble but great peronalities. I have never heard any of them personally talk about his or her 'humility' or strive towards being 'humble'. It's usually left for others to judge. So I guess that you are perhaps, the only 'humble' person I know who openly talks about that personal endowment.

I think I'm finally up to date with the thread. Seems things have been a bit slow. @ Opoks thanks, as per your enquiries, It depends on how you look at it. I didn't study a finance related course in the University, I actually did a science related course but I guess not too long after my Service, I decided to veer off a bit into the finance related line so I took up some finance/accounting related programs. Have actually completed about two now,(ICAN & CISA), CFA will be the third. I work in a finance related environment but I was actually posted to the HR dept. but that wasn't what I had in mind for myself so at least with what I have now, I've been able to get out of HR, I'm more in the operations line for now, though it's not where I plan to end up but it's all a means to an end, all short term plans that I hope will tie into the bigger plan. As per searching for Professional certifications, I think it all depends on what you plan to end up doing, either on your own or as an employee, If you enjoy your current line of work and plan to end up in that line, then you should look for certifications that will fortify you in that line, if you don't plan to remain in that particular line then i think you should look for certifications that would tie into what you plan to end up doing. my 2kobo. Work-life balance, what can i say? I'll like to throw out a few posers; In what context are we defining work? Is it in the context of being present in the office? 'because even those in the commercial banks that close so late atimes and claim to be "busy as hell" sometimes do not spend half of the time they spend in their banks as productively for their employers as they (the employer) would wish for. Some of that time is spent on the net, part of it is spent gisting and doing all sort of "things" that actually can't be called "work". So in the context of balancing the two (work-Life), do you classify the times spent in the office doing 'your own thing" as work or what?, We also have the case in some organisations where you can't leave before your boss, though you may have completed the tasks assigned to you in good time but you now end up just loafing around till Mr./Mrs. Almighty is ready to go home, (God help you if he/she is the type that has an unhappy home---make i no too digress), will the idle time spent waiting for Mr./Mrs. Almighty to feel like going home be classified as work? Anyway, i think what constitutes a balance would vary between individuals and various factors would also contribute such as how much joy/satisfaction the person derives from the job the person is doing, other commitments that the person is committed to outside his/her work environment/job schedule, insecurities that the person might have about his/her job, the person's percieved relevance to his/her job, no matter how misplaced such notions might be, because nobody is indispensable to any organisation. And many other factors that will depend on each individuals circumstance. I noticed that Anniffy is MIA, dumb Kenosky, please confirm by posting happy smileys that he has not been kidnapped yet. Who chase Stan comot thread? Na kuwena with too many "I'm sorry's" or Jisi with her "drunken" posts? Izi, you write well and make a lotta sense, keep it up. Kuwena, you say you've decided to sacrifice all for money? Sometimes I read your posts and wonder if you are just typing to wind people up, to sound out your ideas or actually believe some of the things you type. I believe you read a lot. Please go read up on all these so called "rich men" you want to be like and see if they actually had to go to such extremes to get where they were? And I'm sure if you read enough, you'll find out that some with the benefit of hindsight actually wish they had lived more and enjoyed the simple things of life that brings joy rather than sacrificing all for the pursuit of what the "Wise Man" in the Good Book called vanity. But I've come to realise that you are a very impulsive and prevaricative person and I know that sooner or later, you'll be back apologizing about one post or another, anyway I'll like to tell you that you only have one life to live and there has got to be a balance between everything, it's not about giving 100% to anything and thinking you are living, that would be a big lie, You'll merely be existing and not living. Life is meant to be lived so live and and go throw that 100% loyalty stuff (apologies Obj) where it belongs, in the trash can. This just occured to me, why is it that some people give their all to achieve something and don't while others playfully gloss over that same thing and achieve it easily? Is it because of "Gods' Grace"? (for those that are religiously inclined), is it fate? Is it just another trick that life plays on us all from time to time? For example, why did any of the 'thiefing' governors that planned to be the President of Nigeria not make it and the one that was already going back to dust his old books to go back to the chalk and board "your reward is in heaven" profession get yanked out to be the president? I have my own view on why it is so. What is yours? @ all, have a nice night.

Well this issue of work life balance is an issue for me….I presently work in a knowledge driven environment. I love my job but I hate the hours…work life balance is practically non – existent….i get to work at 8…leave at 9 or 10…sometimes work all night….(although once in a blue moon)……I know I can't live this life when am married or have kids…I wont mind taking a pay cut then to have a less stressful career but I doubt it will come to that though….so basically now am trying to learn all I can…develop myself the best I can and climb the ladder as fast I can

@ Opoks
Welcome Opoks, we've asked after you and been wondering where you been. Welcome again
Let me comment on your question
Your last two statements begs questions: What do you mean by 'trading all'? What is 'all'? How much of 'all' are you willing the trade? How do you go about trading it?
Finally, can anyone ever attain 'spiritual perfection'? Ain't we by nature imperfect? Are there levels of 'perfection'?
My Response
I was very careful how I referred to spiritual perfection. Recall my emphasis on "my pursuit" and "I endeavour". Spiritual perfection as a quest, is a journey which we embark daily and can account for how far we've gone; meaning there are levels to it. Perfection is a destination and that destination is not of the physical, we call it DEATH, but its more of a translation from natural to supernatural or from the physical to the spiritual, its that point when one achieves complete liberation from "MySelf"( carnality) and attains true FREEDOM. The closer you draw towards spiritual perfection the further you go from your "self" and the closer you are to your "Spirit", you consistently transform daily and (i) if balanced with a consideration to the well being of the body, the body is subdued gradually and dies by the natural processs of aging, else (ii) a forcefully subdual of the body by the spirit - Till you are no more,
I wanted to add this and many more to my post but consider it too profound for public presentation.

niyoo Thanks for challenging me. ICAN, CISA & NOW CFA? Very impressive. Leaves me to figure out what I want for myself This just occured to me, why is it that some people give their all to achieve something and don't while others playfully gloss over that same thing and achieve it easily? Is it because of "Gods' Grace"? (for those that are religiously inclined), is it fate? Is it just another trick that life plays on us all from time to time? For example, why did any of the 'thiefing' governors that planned to be the President of Nigeria not make it and the one that was already going back to dust his old books to go back to the chalk and board "your reward is in heaven" profession get yanked out to be the president? I have my own view on why it is so. What is yours?
My guy, there is something such as favour. Joseph the Dreamer had it. How else did he, a foreigner became a prime minister, next to pharoah? Did he work harder than everyone else in his time? No. Prophet Daniel had it. How else was he promoted to his level, higher than all the other King's advisers and administering a third of the kingdom of Persia? Also a foreign land? Was he wiser than everyone else in his tme? If so, to whom did he attribute his wisdom? God. These guys were extremely stubborn individuals who were willing to die for what they believed in. I also believe in such thing as destiny. I do not think that Oprah Winfrey work harder than all the women in the USA, yet she is up there! She has been the most powerful celebrity in the USA (and perhaps the world) for a long time, with multiple earnings to match that profile. Neither do I think that Brad Pitt and his beau, Angelina Jolie put in extra efforts in their mad popularity rating right now. I do not think that Roman Abramovich (Chelsea's owner) is smarter than anyone here. I think that opportunity met the man. The man met opportunity, whatever. I believe in destiny! After all, unlike most of us, he was orphaned early and had a very hard childhood. Our own IBB was also orphaned early but see how powerful he became today. We are not all presented with equal opportunities just like we are not evenly gifted. Everyone has a script written for him or her to play and that is why Christ famously said that 'we would always have the poor among us'. We all pray and strive not to be among 'the poor' and this is why I often advocate that we try to reach out to help those we fare better than. Does it mean that we should then sit down, relax and resign our lives to destiny? No. Life is a struggle. Some are born Great, others achieve Greatness yet some others have Greatness thrusted upon them. I think some of the people I mentioned above had Geatness enthrusted upon them. l Ditto the Yar'adua you mentioned above and even OBJ with his multiple terms as Head of State. However, rags to riches stories still exist. And rags to riches are made every day! Who knows, by working hard, the likes of us might persuade the God of Favour to smile on us. All I know is that one day . . . it takes one day for a man's script to be re-written. It takes one day for a man to forget all his days of strugle (just like it takes one day for him to lose it all) Whatever be the case, we will keep struggling. And hoping that our lives get better I will also add that there is no established route to success; it could be via academics, sports, professional exams, chance opportunity, mishap, business, loss, prayer, chance stumble, whatever Everyone has his script and his route lined out for him or her. To discover what works for you and which is your route is the beginning of success. It may not be making a lot of money, it may not be being a leader over many but whatever it is, everyone is relevant one way or another. Are you looking at the wrong direction? Do you think you may have been focusing on the wrong things? Do you think you need to appraise your life, where you've been headed? I think you should do it now? I did one yesterday evening and I think it should be a continuous thing. Cheers!

The first thing to do, I suppose, is to choose. You have to know what you want out of life. When you know what you want, then you must plan on how to get it (this, I think, is what people naturally do); but as they try to act on their plan, they meet obstacles, which they then try to overcome. I think it is these obstacles that make the plans not to be followed exactly as they were laid down by the people; but even when the plans change, the original choice (that is, what you want to be) should not change. If it does, the chooser may likely never be what he chose to. He needs to keep adapting, and learning and redefining his plans.

WHAAAAT TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY ??
ANYWAY I WISH YOU A GREAT DAY THOUGH ITS LATE.
GREAT THINGS ACTUALLY HAPPEN ON GREAT DAYS
I actually came back to pay my due respect to one of my
childhood heroes
I have always asked the question, what do we do to our heroes ?
Ans: We seek to kill them
And what happens if and when they die ?
Ans: We bury them and forget them.
this piece is dedicated to the LATE Sam Sochukwuma Okwaraji.
the guy who played and died for Nigeria on the 12th August 1989
exactly 19 years ago.
I hope you guys (Ken and Kuwena - he was your namesake ) remember him.
may his legacy continue live in our hearts.
