Guys,
I simply do not understand the crux of this debate. Are we saying peeps that graduated with 2.2 are better than those that graduated with 1st class and 2.1? I think we should all be objective here and not allow our emotions rule us. I will not say 2.1 is definitely better than 2.2 but in life there are rules that govern the game and if they are known beforehand then there shouldn't be any cause for complaints. How many of us here got into university without realising that in the outside world a 2.1 is viewed to be better than a 2.2? Knowing this, why would you not then go ahead to make sure you graduate with one knowing that it is what life requires of you. My humble opinion is that your grade is a fairly accurate description of your academic abilities. Please note that I said "academic abilities" which might be different from ability on the job. You might have crammed and whatever but the important thing is that you did what was needed to make the best out of the situation you were in. That is one of the key things that employers are looking for, the fact that you were able to make something good out of that situation. So the corollary is that since one is able to do well before, he'll most likely do well again. But pray, how do you expect someone who wants to differentiate between potential employees to go about it? Employ all of them for a year to see how they do on the job? Of course that is unrealistic so you will expect such a person to refer to past records which is what all the 2.1 & 2.2 stuff is all about.
When we say companies emphasize certification, what do we really mean? What are the certificates certifying? They certify your academic abilities. I'm sure no company has ever told anyone that they should your certificate to gauge how well you will do on the job. In a booming economy there would have been no need for all these arguments but we unfortunately find ourselves in a situation where it is "survival of the fittest". Please if you had a 2.2 do not be discouraged, you are the only one that can hold yourself down. Develop other skills and go for further studies. Alternatively, start with the not-so well-paying jobs and garner experience while proving your mettle. You will be surprised to discover that the 2.1/2.2 stuff only exists for entry level (no other way to differentiate) and when it comes to experienced positions it is what you have done and achieved that matters.
Last word: The opportunities are vast and available, all you need to do is quit feeling bitter about others and make out a way for yourself. While going about it, make sure you excel at it because people judge you based on what you've done in the past.

please where do you classify someone that graduated with a GPA of 3.49. It happened to a close friend of mine, despite the fact that he tried to meet up with 2.1, yet he couldn't. I think we should learn to see the better side of the coin, because what you see as limitation to you, eventually becomes one. You've got to envisage where you are going, because you cannot feature in a future you cannot picture. If you see your grade as a limitation to getting to the top, good luck to you. but i bet you it's got nothing to do with your DESTINY. DREAM BIG. DELAY IS NOT DENIAL. It shall be well.

Well i think our government have not helped graduates with second class lower division, even when applying for government jobs at time you are required to have minimum of a second class upper division. Most times you realize that a student of second class upper is not even better off than that of a second class lower.
I happen to be a victim of such and i knew how i felt when all my mates graduated with a second class upper. I had 3.44 while to graduate with second class upper you must make 3.5 the difference was (0.6).
I realized that life is not about the results but about what we make out of it. I have been able to look beyond the results and move forward with my working career. I want you all to know that "there is hope for a tree that is cut down" as long as the roots are in place.
Drop the idea of looking at the past and face your tomorrow with every confidence that you would make it. I would also like you all to know that you can apply for the same job a second class upper graduate is applying for. If you out perform the other you are most guaranteed the job.
My last word of advise is "Winners Don't Quit and Quitters Don't Win", Winning is a thing of the Mind.

its really unfortunate that most company's discriminate between grades but its d reality. would advise that those with 2:2 and below should try acquiring other Qualifications to boost their CVs. Remember before ur ability is tested, its what is on ur CV that counts or provides the opportunity for the prospective employer to know what u re capable of doing. don't just stop at convincing yourself that u're worth this or that, try convincing others too. Add more value to that 2:2. All the best
