What is iptables?
Originally, the most popular firewall/NAT package running on Linux was ipchains, but it had a number of shortcomings. To rectify this, the Netfilter organization decided to create a new product called iptables, giving it such improvements as:
1. Better integration with the Linux kernel with the capability of loading iptables-specific kernel modules designed for improved speed and reliability.
2. Stateful packet inspection. This means that the firewall keeps track of each connection passing through it and in certain cases will view the contents of data flows in an attempt to anticipate the next action of certain protocols. This is an important feature in the support of active FTP and DNS, as well as many other network services.
3. Filtering packets based on a MAC address and the values of the flags in the TCP header. This is helpful in preventing attacks using malformed packets and in restricting access from locally attached servers to other networks in spite of their IP addresses.
4. System logging that provides the option of adjusting the level of detail of the reporting.
5. Better network address translation.
6. Support for transparent integration with such Web proxy programs as Squid.
7. A rate limiting feature that helps iptables block some types of denial of service (DoS) attacks,
Considered a faster and more secure alternative to ipchains, iptables has become the default firewall package installed under RedHat and Fedora Linux.

Hey Guys, Do we need to create another Linix thread instead of adding to this one? Especially so, since folks are going to be using the unix accounts offered by sbucareer. I would think so. What do you guys thinks? Furthermore, how can i log into my account from my kubuntu install? Thanks!

anton, if you have another unix flavor i.e kubuntu, you don't need the remote unix box. If you were wondering of taking the advantage of free hosting then you'D download putty from and scroll down to putty-0.58.tar.gz. Unpack and install it, in your kubuntu and run it to remote access my Unix server. The host name is yexon.co.uk. If I have created you with an account, you will need it to login. Also, you will need some sort of ftp program i.e. http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WS_FTP/ to login. Your username and passwd for ftp is the same for remote login. If you want me to host your own domain name let me know so I can transfer your domain records to my DNS server. Note, it takes about 72hrs to propagate.

If u don't know sh*t about computers i advice u to stay away from linux - it will make you tear your hair out.
Most people i have met always look for a little blue "e" to access web pages, a start menu, "My computer", and solitaire. on any computer. And when they don't find it, hell breaks loose. Besides, i have not had really fun experience with running linux on anything less than a 256MB 1.0 GHz P3/P4 (which most people DONT have, anyway).
But i'm so hookd i sometimes type "clear", "tracert", "ifconfig eth0" and "su" in a windows command prompt.

hahahahahaaaa!!! GridLock you are so right. But a little encouragement should be given to newbies wanting to learn unix.
I get messed up my self with unix and windows command. So this is what I have done. In my fedora core 4, I have modified my .bashrc and added alias to windows command i.e.
alias cls='clear' alias cmd='/usr/bin/emacs' alias ipconfig='/sbin/ifconfig'
etc,
Remember to source your .bashrc i.e. [root@nairaland.com ~]$ source ~/.bashrc

As for me I like linux but love working with Windows. The simplicity and availability of learning materials makes windows my choice. I have installed and configure Redhat Linux before, infact I am still using squid ( proxy server) to connect my LAN to the internet but the problem is the non availabilty of someone to run to when there is a problem. I think people with very good knowledge of linux are very few and some of them tends to hide this knowledge from we starters. May be over protecting their jobs or what. For the past 12months I have not being able to enable my linux squid server to allow viewing of web cam on my LAN after many researchs and trying to get someone to assist. So how do I now appreciated linux with my problem not solve over this long period of time.

I agree with you, big time. I have installed and configure Redhat Linux before, infact I am still using squid ( proxy server) to connect my LAN to the internet but the problem is the non availabilty of someone to run to when there is a problem.
Heh heh. u ever tried the forums for the distro u are using? they may be a big help. I think people with very good knowledge of linux are very few
Do you mean in Nigeria? I am one of them and some of them tends to hide this knowledge from we starters. May be over protecting their jobs or what.
Ah. maybe. but I beleive in "you got it 4 free, you got to give it away for free" I didnt pay a dime for all i know on linux now, and i wont hide my knowledge from anybody. Speaking 4 myself, sha. For the past 12months I have not being able to enable my linux squid server to allow viewing of web cam on my LAN after many researchs and trying to get someone to assist.
Squid is a proxy server. to my knowledge webcams have problems with proxy servers. You should try an alternate arrangemment for the LAN. I may have a few suggestions. So how do I now appreciated linux with my problem not solve over this long period of time.
Linux aint that bad. seeing as u are using it for a server, u can get the most and the best out of RH9! Help is not so faraway, you know.

Am sure you will agre with me that one of the best points of Linux is that it flies on old computers on which windows would groan. I have run Mepis, Suse, Knoppix, Kanotix, Ubuntu,Kubuntu etc on various hardware ranging from a 233 MHZ Dell Cp. I am currently running Mepis/Suse/(K)ubuntu on a 366 MHZ IBM thinkpad and it just flies. Try running Win 98 on any of this hardware not to talk of win XP. Having said that, I just got an Imac a couple of weeks back and boy oh boy is the Mac OS to die for. A lot of the stuff in Gnome are actually copied from there. It is just sublime. By the way Seun could you enable .tiff in the attachment list? I would like to post my Mac's desktop but seems I can only save it in .tiff which nairaland does not accept.

@ Niggy are using the preview of Opera 9? It has an inbuilt Bittorrent client. Open source is so great, I use the same software on my Mac and on my linux laptop. Wonderful. Openoffice works wonderfully on Mac OS X but you will need to install X11 before you can run it.
Talking about installing and removing programs, Linux has to go the way of Mac. So easy. Windows will never get to this level. Its all about making life easier for the user.
In mac you just drag the programs icon to a folder and to delete it, drag the icon to the trashcan as easy as that.

I'm around guys! When i started this thread what i discussed mostly was distros and server configuration. i know i left some topics uncompleted:pardon me. But i did like to progress to desktop appreciation for the sake of newbie. Here i ll list lots of windows alternative programs and discuss how to use them. I'm an Engineering student so the engineers will enjoy this better. To start with i use KDE desktop-my recent desktop theming is shown earlier. I love KDE. That aside, bt not forgetting that some packages works fine and better on KDE than GNOME(don't like it). Don't mind my sentiment. Further more, many of the packages are source code, so dear newbie, get ready to upgrade your gcc compiler, compile codes and solve dependencies issues. Don't worry, i'm make the dependencies 'wahala' easy. Be rite back.

Firstly, let me start with the multimedia playback.hmm , okay audio i use amarok and xmms. why? They look real and have good font ends. only that? Of course not! I ve a gstreamer-mp3 pluggin installed on my amarok and it can now play mp3. Bt wma, hell no for now. That's where my xmms comes in. my xmms has a wma pluggin and i can play wma. The major difference between xmms and amarok is that, amarok has a library manager, bt xmms doesn't. Got to answer this phone call. brb.

Oh, just to make you green with envy, I can download a full 700MB .iso file in less than an hour on my 2MB broadband connection. I try out so much distros that way. Last weekend ,I went through Ubuntu Dapper drake, Mepis 3.4.3, PC linux OS, Kanotix 2005-04 to name but a few. Now if only postage was not so terrible to Naija, I woulda burnt whatever you want and popped it into the post for you. Anyhow, let me know what you want, I might see someone coming over to Naija and give the person the Cds

I made too great discovery on linux desktop theming i wish to share; firstly, i downloaded the source package for the crystal (0.99) dekorator theme and compiled it. wow! i was tripped. It 's the best theme i've ever used. try it out. i ll paste my screen shot tomorrow. Again, to windows love, you can enjoy your favorite windows fonts on linux, by importing them to linux. How? it's easy. Go to your KDE control panel, system adminsration, font intaller. Then specify the directory of the windows fonts. the linux font installer automatically import your windows fonts into linux and make them usable on the fly! I ve mstruefont, georgia fonts imported to my fedora this way. L8a guys!

THe thinkpad 600e has a history of not reporting the proper sound card to the Linux kernel. As such, it is always a very big headache getting sound to work with the Cirrus logic soundcard which comes with this laptop. I have tried Mepis, Kanotix, Suse, Ubuntu,Knoppix and various other distros on it and the result is always the same. No sound.
I just reinstalled Ubuntu Dapper drake flight 5 on it and the steps below are how I got the sound working.
Step 1 is to add the modules reported to the blacklist so that it will not be loaded when the system starts up. To do this, add the modules
snd-cs46xx cs46xx
to the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist. Open this file by running a terminal and typing "sudo gedit /etc/hotplug/blacklist"
Step 2 is to add some lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Open a terminal and type "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base". once the file is open, add the following lines to the bottom.Make sure it is saved just as the lines are below.
alias char-major-116 snd alias char-major-14 soundcore alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236 options snd-cs4236 isapnp=0 cport=0x538 port=0x530 sb_port=0x220 fm_port=0x388 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=0 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
options snd cards_limit=1
Step 3, open the /etc/modules file and add the line
snd-cs4236
Close all the text files and reboot your system. Sound should work now.
As a follow up, it seems if I do not pass "acpi=off pnpbios=off" to the kernel when starting, my wireless card does not work. In some cases, this also affects the sound. If after the steps above sound does not work, ou might try passing this command to the kernel when booting. If sound works, you need to make this change to the /boot/grub/menu.lst
