@Ogisosoft, thx man.
I ve not writen for  a while now so i think i should talk about something many people might have issues with. It's on how to copy your vcd to your hard disk in linux. In windows system where u just copy the avseq0x f(x can be 1or2 , ) from the mpeg directory on the vcd disk, but mind you what your windows does is to silently convert the vcd to a format that can be stored on your system under a disguished mode of "copying, ". It's not copying,it's converting!Another windows issue!
so on your linux box, you can't copy the avseq0_what_ever to your hard drive directly, you need an encoder: This can be done in two steps;
Download and install
1.memcoder. Memcode package is writen by mplayer, so it's based on mplayer and mplayer is based on other dependencies.
2.kvideoencoder. This is a gui to memcoder.
please note: Due to english autocorrection issue's on this site, i 've problem writing .d_a_t without the underscore, so please write it in your own case without the underscore.
The issue here is now how to use the kvideoencoder to convert the favorite avseq0x.that to a format that can be stored on your hard disk. The source option in the gui should be "vcd", the video encoder should be "direct stream copy" and the output format should be "mpeg", then name the output file as "what_you_want.d_a_t"( e.g avseq01.d_a_t)Note i made my output format to be also .d_a_t, you have option for avi.Easy, huh?

This is for interested gamers in linux.  CUBE is a 3D game like ur DOOM or UT or QUAKE in linux. The package need no installation. I got it over the weekend and i was amazed by the game handling of linux. ALIEN 2006 , ELITE:Enemy Territory are also sophisticated games on linux. L8a.

Hmmn ,  I'm back to this thread!  I sincerely think that Linux rocks!  The issue may be on the "usability" and I think that is simply becuase so many peeps are used to windows and naturally may not be able to change.  Those people will probably have issues with Mac.

Sincerely, installing Linux may be a challenge to a noob but it is definitely not as complex as dealing with dependency issues when installing rpms or  source files -- that is a pain in the neck.  Windows has it right with those, I will be sincere.  Gaming is also awesome on windows.  One more thing is that there are like infinity number of developers available for windows software and I guess that's what's really keeping Microsoft.

All of that said, let's face why you want to use your computer - you need it to be productive.  I'm an engineer (well student engineer) and I've come to realise that Linux is awesome for my kind. First, it is super stable and highly secure. Second, I just get the tools I need to be very effective at work and in cases where it's not feasible, I can tweak my OS to meet my requirements.  The tools I use right now are  below:

Maxima - for symbollic computations
Octave - Numerical computations -- like matlab
Scilab - Another software for numerical computations
GNU C++ - Do I have to describe?
GNU CLisp (Common Lisp) -- if you know AI, then you should have heard of LISP

Will continue later -- NEPA has struck!
As I was saying,
MATLAB - A real winner in numerical computing (DSP, Neural Networks, Image Processing, Simulation, gosh! , )
OpenGL - Great for producing 3D animations (if you can code it well, I can't yet Smiley)
Firefox - For research.  Don't mess with tabbed browsing.  If you've used it once, you'll forever hate MS Explorer v6 downwards
kdissert - mindmap tool that help me in generating reports
OpenOffice - Awesome office suite.  I get create scientific documents with formulas on the fly.  I prefer it to the        ANNOYING equation editor on M$ Office.
Kontact - PIM software to keep me organized
GNU Cash - Keeps my finances in check

When I'm not doing school work, I get to do some media editing and encoding
Mencoder - for encoding video files (.mov,.avi,.mpeg,.flv,.mp4(with AAC support) and others) straight from tv, dvds, vcds, audiocds, etc.
MainActor - Video editing
digiKam - Used for managing my photos
GIMP - A formidable Adobe Photoshop rival
Audacity - for mixing sounds
Lame - best mp3 encoder around
k3b - 4 burning VCDs, SVCDs, MixedMode CDs, AudioCDs.

I can't remember when last I formatted my computer for anything.  I've even forgotten how to scan for viruses.  Disk checks are automatic, all my devices are supported (I even browse through my SE k700i). It's important to add that I don't have a killer computer but Linux uses it to perform great feats.

SPECS:
AMD AthlonXP 2600+ (Barton)
ASRock Mobo
256MB DDR
50Gig
NVIDIA GeForce2 64MB (with 17" LG monitor - forget the screen quality)
Liteon CDWriter
LifeView TV Card

That's just a few of the things I do with Linux, why won't I love GNU/Linux?

I tested suse10 sometimes and never liked it.Too simple for my liking. I like distros that make me learn and use the command line. With Yakuake the distance between me and the CL is just the F12 key. Core 5 rocks and it's stable. It has supports and moreover it's based on the ever leading Redhat. The repos are just fantastic with good updates and kernel patches. Like it with passion!

Wow!  I have always hated Fedora since the Red hat days, that's why I went for mandrake. The fact that I had to type /sbin/fdisk instead of fdisk (like my mandrake) was very annoying.  At that time, I was not bothered about updating my .profile file Smiley. The GUI was so annoying! I started to bone mandrake when I started to use Suse and after they changed the name to Mandriva Smiley

Seriously, the reason I use Suse is because of it's awesome support for my device off the box and Novell's participation.  It is also a developer's haven.  So many things came off the box with it. It is simple and yet can outperform Fed Core X in many ways.  I won't deny that Fed is a power horse (many of my friends are Fed boys) but I guess Suse 9.3 (I may not upgrade until forever) suits me perfectly.  Thank God for improved GUI from Fed 4 upwards.  I also didn't like Suse 10.

I still use mandrake on my second machine (P233, 96MB, 2gig) for testing stuff especially network related things.

About CLI, I love it.  I think I can do faster things.  Infact when I want to capture videos, it's best that I do it without X running. It's clean to configure network services, bluetooth profile, etc through CLI.  Believe me, you'll get to a stage where you won't want to keep tinkling with command line except when necessary esp if you have GUI interface that are robust enough like what Suse YAST or the Drake tools for Mandrake.  Sincerely, I think that there should be a balance.  Although my brother keeps accusing me of using CLI too much, I think I gradually attaining that balance.

Sorry if my thread doesn't make complete sense

i'm actually not a game person but since i got my Celeron 2.6Ghz 512MB with the lastest VIA Unichrome p4m800 VGA chipset, i decide to explore the world of linux games. Cube, Alienarena 2006, ppracer and foobillard were my target. These are heavy 3D games i hope to enjoy but an issue came up. The games drags. This wz pretty painful and i had to spend almost a week getting my 3D feature enbled in my kernel in order to enjoy these game. This is wht led to this tutorial. i decide to discuss Direct Rendering Management. This is for interested games.
your p4 2.6 GHz can be as slow as a p1 233 if you don't have DRI (direct rendering Infrastructure) installed and enabled on your box. This might be restricted to FC5, that's what i use.
For anything 3D on your linux you need OpenGL, and the free version implemented linux is called Mesa3d (www.mesa3d.org). Aside this you need the DRM package. With this two things your games are ready to fly. So we will be talking about "glx" and "dri". This two must be loaded by the kernel and this can be checked in you xorg.conf file. you will see lines that reads load "glx" load "dri".
But this does't still mean your dri is enabled, so to check do
glxinfo | less
you would get a line that reads Direct Rendering = yes
if no you have to find a way of installing drm and it's kernel modification rpm package or source code compilation. i wz lucky to get the rpm for drm for FC5 from ATrpm.org ( you can google for the correct link).
Another test is the
glxgears

this command should start the 3d rolling gears where you can measure your system FPS ( frame per second). If you FPS is  less than 100 you can't play any 3d game. They will drag. This i experience before. After enabling dri my FPS shoot up to 600fps. This is good. now i enjoy any 3d game without fuss. if you have powerful 3d graphic adapters you FPS should be well above 3000fps. wow that sounds good!
Who says linux don't hav games? Try cube, alienarena2006. Foobillard is for snookers lover. This is absolutely 3D and fantastic.

What can I say?  You've said it all Niggy! If you're using an NVIDIA card on your machine, it is much easier to configure it for 3d apps.  NVIDIA installation is pretty straightforward but you may need to modify the xorg.conf file (in you're not using Suse).  Funny enough, you've gotta ensure that those 2 lines are there:
    load glx
    load dri

Up till now, I never understood what DRI was.

It think that with a good graphics card, you can get a lot of FPS for your video.  I got an average of 5500fps on my own machine (NVIDIA GeForce 2 -- 32MB with Windowmaker Window Manager) after running glxgears.  I bet very serious gamers will have far better cards!

I also agree with you on CUBE, it's somehow like quake.  FooBillard is a winner.  BZFlag aint bad too.  There are a lot of games on my box by default, I don't get to play them Smiley

Re: Linux or Windows Operating System?
« #401 on: August 23, 2006, 01:16 PM »

@ scribe,
thx man, i ll do somethin about that soonnest.

I quickly want to explain the reason why linux does not need defragmentation.
As we all know windows file system is VFAT while linux is Ext3. FAT file system stores files sequencially and each time the string of data been store encounter another bit streams which are already stored, windows create a linker as the last bit of the file been store to the free block where the stored data will continue. That's why you have bits of same file flying all over the hdd. So each time windows want to access a file it has to first search for the complete file bits all around the hdd hence windows slows down with time. Thus frequent crashes set-in. Due unprompted power down, data are lost and difficult to recover. This explain the frequent boot up problem due to missing file. Hence defragmentation is necessary to bring the file bits together.
But in linux, this is not an issue.
Linux creats what is call a superblock in every partition on the system when you create an ext3 file system. this is similar to the master boot sector on the first partition. linux stores what is called the an inode table in each superblock. An inode table is the address of each file stored on the hdd. This gives it the address of the location of the full file size stored. When a file is requested, instead of search like windows, it just chech the inode table and get the full address of the requested file. Brilliant. The inode table also store the information about each bit store so data recovery is very efficent in linux. the inode table also store security and permission info about each file store. Wow! so linux doesnot do defragmentation.
Files can be checked by their inode numbers with this command,
ls -i

i wll soon talk about multitasking in windows and linux.

Re: Linux or Windows Operating System?
« #402 on: August 23, 2006, 01:36 PM »

Again, mult-user and multi-tasking is a know capability of linux. Windows don't do  multi-user but a different form of multi-tasking called task switching. It is a standalone system. it is designed for just one user. When windows created user accounts, its only giving you the option of customizing each users desktop theme.
Mult-user explains when different users can login into a machine at the same time and work without jeopardy in performance. This linux does effectively. This is a function of the type of network or terminal connection available to your system. Meaning userA can be working locally while userB login into his/her account through the network and work conveniently also.
Multi-tasking is when an operation system can perform more than one thing at the same time. It can be divided into two task switching and task slicing.
Task switch is similar to queuing up tasks. when you open an application and then open another, window queue them up and open them after the other. so if the first on is not responding it affects the execution of another. That's when windows freezes up after performing an illegal operation or becomes unstable.
Linux do task slicing. Tasks are executed in a form of slice. When different apps are launched, linux slices them up and execute them in a form of slice. So no apps disturb the other. The more apps your try to launch at the same time , the longer the time it takes them to open. Tha's why linux rarely(doesn't ) freeze up. Linux is also able to detect an apps  not responding before you even notice. Tha'ts why KDE quickly tells u about the termination of an unresponding task.

Contributions are welcome please. L8a.

I got a Debian Sarge CD. After installing as directed by the accompanying manual. I only landed in a DOS like environment. Any idea on how I can move from there to the graphic style desktop? I was expecting to have some kind of desktop like you posted above. Am not an IT guru. So I can't imagine myself working with command line codes.  Huh

Try startx or init 5 at the command line. If this doesn't work then you have to fine a way of installing the KDE, Enlightenmet or GNOME GUI from the debian Cd rom. Enjoy!

I tried that, but I get stuck when it starts loading x-window-system. Brings out an error message about my mouse. The whole things looks so complex and confusing. Its a battle that will go on for ever.
I use Windows at work and its great and all but its just too expensive.
I have been playing around with linux for about 5 years now and the bottom line is, it works
Linux is so much more stable and less expensive (Its free)
Plus it comes with tons of quality applications that if you used windows will cost you an arm and a leg.
I have a system here at work configured as a router and get this, its been up and running for close to 3 months now i haven't even had to reboot it.

Glad you approve niggy,if you are only running linux as you say you are then you spec is too tight. I had to beef mine up so that i could run all my test machines off it. I used to have quite a number of computers in my garage, and set them all up into a couple of domains but now with the aid of virtualization i run fedora core 5, windows server 2003, 2000, XP off one machine and the cool part is i get to run most of them simulteaneously . meaning i have my entire test lab running of just one monster of a box( if i must say so myself)

Am an IT administrator and i have to dabble between technologies so i won't ever go all out and say linux is much better than windows is or vice versa, the truth is that linux rocks!!!! big time. The thing just works period, end of story. I got a couple of servers running off linux boxes back at the office and u would be amazed at the spec of the machines all my users serve off, nothing fancy.

I love my windows, don't get me wrong, i love my group polices, systems restore, sus, asr and a host of other cool advanced features but when it comes to stability and uptime, no contest linux rules. Let me rephrase that fedora core 5 rules.
