I am surprised that those of us who are supposed to be a little enlightened - thank to leaving the country, still go round the world with a stereotyped and tribalist mind.

@topic, should never have mentioned the a particular tribe.  It is a Nigerian problem. If you go the average cafe in the country there is a mixture of tribes involved.  The fact that Oprah,s show mentioned Ibo like names does not imply that only Ibos are involved. I am sure you all someone involved in even worse crimes that is not IBO.  How abou those that are not Ibo but yet have Ibo aliases as a cover.

Lets grow up.

Gentlemen and ladies, let us not dissipate our energies aimlessly.
What we should be concerned about now, is how would all this end? What should each of our contributions be to stop this menace? This should be a thread that we must all contribute to.

I'm so disgusted at the way you guys have turned a topic that just begs for intellectual discourse into an igbo bashing thread. Why? As someone said before, the Whit eman doesnt know igbo or Yoruba, all he cares about is that these people are Nigerians.

Some say the Government is to blame fo not providing jobs for these 419 guys. But that's a crazy line of logic. Nigeria's not the only country with rampant unemployment, and how many 419 guys are satisfied with making 2 million naira a year (which is comparable to what u make if u work in a bank)? The greed is insatiable!

if the truth be told, WE all are to blame for this 419 explosion, and i mean that. ALL OF US are culpable here. Let me explain;
I grew up in Benin City, and i can tell you that up till the late '90s (probably mid-90s if you grew up in lagos) 419 guys were shunned as social pariahs and thieves. Suddenly, these guys started being THE men, we started accepting this canker in our society. Instead of being regarded as little more than common thieves, WE turned them into our heroes, people to be admired and envied. With this stigma removed, loads more people flocked to join in. As k yourself if we haven't grown more tolerant to these guys in recent times. As i speak to you, 80%  of the girls in any Nigerian higher institution will willingly date a 419 guy just cos he's got money to spend. It's a simple matter for Banks to regularly check on accounts with over 2 million naira in them belonging to people between 18 - 21. But this just isn't done.
A new employee in a Bank is given a target of N100 million by his branch manager. where else will; he get that kind of money if not from 419 boys? and when they help him out, he becomes hopelessly compromised, he'll continue to launder money for them for years to come. I don't know where the term 'yahoo yahoo' or 'yahoo boys' come from, but that certainly isn't a derogatory term. I think we should call it as it is and call them 419 or thieves as we used to.

I don't know why some of us are blaming the victims. I see no reason why we should call them greedy for trying to get easy money. isnt that what we do when we buy Zenith Bank and Dangote shares and hope they double in value? Are we greedy? Go read most of these letters, tell me how you can call a man greedy if he's been told he won a lottery or a rich relative left him money. The victims of the Hurricane Katrina scams, are they greedy too?

Someone said other countries are corrupt too, and someone else mentioned the US. The clear difference between Nigerian corruption and American corruption is that corruption in the US is nearly non-existent in the middle and lower strata of the society. Most times you hear of corruption there, it's likely the big corporations, industry moguls and CEOs. In Nigeria, corruption permeates all strata of the society, down to the guy who makes you bribe him before he sells you fuel during fuel scarcity. WE have the more serious problem, because we're corrupt through and through!

We should thank Oprah and CNN for doing this, instead of crying about Nigeria's image being tarnished. The truth is, the only way 419 will stop is if everyone out there is savvy about this kind of thing. I'm extremely happy that this was broadcast on Oprah, a programme with such a wide viewership, because it could probably help reduce the number of such scams. When the mugus wise up and the trickle of money dries up, these 419 guys will have to seek another source of livelihood. So the more the word is spread, the better for us in the long run.

Crazy logic, but it just might be true. . .

PLease I am using this medium to tell Nigerians to give Igbos Biafra , so that they will have a country of their own, and allow we Saint from the Yoruba land to have Nigeria .

All the disciples of Lord Lugard.

In your quest to Tribalise Crimes you will fail woefully.

In your Quest to Nigerianise crime you will have enormous failure.

There different types of 419 and you must know that this game is Just as witchCraft.

That is you are first deceived and them you begin to deceive others.

In ghana they always keep trying to Nigerianise crime as though that will solve crime. You must have a scientific approach to crime solving it.

Crime is one thing that is practiced and learned.

In America today the Blacks can commit a crime and go scout free because they can PLAY THE VICTIMS OF RACIAL LABELLING.

There is online scam come from the USA. Even there is alot of scam that N.G.O'S are involved in.  The UN is involved in scams but will OPRAH talk about it no.

We know that there are Criminal that are Nigerians and they are no different from an Italian in another part of Crime.

You must know that If a Nigerian is seen and confirmed a criminal and it is generalized it then set a precedence in any competent court that If a Nigerian guilty or not guilty could be freed if the counsel can proof the state is Biased.

That is why not until a conviction is giving we can not call all Nigerians 419

@texazzpete

You make me Laugh here Who told you that there are no fraud in USA. You will soon tell me that the US citizen are Angels.

Crime differs from region to region in the way it is executed. You must be on planet pluto when american soldier were torturing Iraqs in Abu Ghriab Prison!

Humans are wicked but there are some that stand out.  We cannot TRIBALIZE OR NATIONALISE CRIME IT DOESNOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

IF A NIGERIAN IS CAUGHT IN A CRIME AND HE IS SENTENCED THE MATTER ENDS THERE. ALL WE CAN DO IS TO MAKE SURE WE PREVENT HIM FROM CONTINUING IN THE CRIME AGAIN. WHERE HE COMES FROM SHOULD BE FOR DESCRIPTIVE PURPOSES WE ARE ON TRIAL HERE WE AND OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN AND WE ALL COULD BE SENTENCED TO PRISON CRIMINAL PROPENSITY.

STOP THIS LABELLING STOP I SAY THERE ARE HONEST NIGERIANS THAT WILL NOT TOUCH 419 WITH A 10 FOOT POLE.

this some of the transcript of the programme

To get to the bottom of these scams, Brian travels halfway around the world to Nigeria, home to more than 13 million people who earn an average of $1 a week.

There he learns that scammers are known as "419 men," which refers to the section of Nigerian criminal code that makes it illegal to obtain money under false pretenses. "Until very recently, it was a law that was almost never enforced," Brian says. "Police here say at any given time, there are thousands of 419 men online at small Internet cafes trying to scam Americans."

Local investigators help Brian infiltrate a cafe, where they catch con men in the act. One of the men they arrest is in the middle of trying to cheat an American woman who had just sent him her photo and bank account number. Brian says Americans are the primary targets of these scams because scammers see them as "mugus"—which means "big, gullible fools."

Brian says one of the reasons Nigeria is a source of so many scams is because a large number of citizens are living below the poverty level. "This is a desperately poor country with wonderful people who are very intelligent, a good school system [but] no jobs," Brian says. "It's [also] a corrupt country where the leaders have been corrupt for years. They've doomed their people to a life of poverty, and the lesson has been taught that you can get away with crimes and nothing happens."

For years, Nigerian con men got away with their crimes and made small fortunes…but not anymore. Pressure from the United States and Great Britain has prompted the government to start cracking down. The men caught during Brian's investigation are facing criminal charges.

And this was Oprah conclusions:

I know we're going to get a letter from somebody saying that Nigeria has a lot of wonderful people. You don't have to send the letter," Oprah says. "We already know that. We're just talking about this particular scam that's going on. We're not talking about the entire country and everybody in the country.

My own conclusions:
1}i think Oprah as done us a good job, why? cos its takes two or more people to do scam. Its like THE FIRE TRIANGLE,for a fire to occur three things need to come together:OXYGEN,FUEL AND HEAT,if we remove one of the ingredients needed to start a fire then the  fire will go out.Meaning take out the "MUGU" and there will be PEACE.except for those that knowingly taken the risk,we shouldnt be naive about this, some westeners thinks we AFRICAN are some dummies they can take for a ride and that leads to my second conclusion.
2}"This is a desperately poor country with wonderful people who are very intelligent, a good school system [but] no jobs,".Miss Oprah as manage to educate her people, "poor country" maybe but nigerian are wonderful and intelligent people but some decided to use their skills to do crime just like in every country and race, and also that Nigerian are not dummies like they think the rest of African are.
3}For years, Nigerian con men got away with their crimes and made small fortunes…but not anymore. Pressure from the United States and Great Britain has prompted the government to start cracking down. The men caught during Brian's investigation are facing criminal charges. At least we are now taking back our destiny and image from this so called "bad eggs".
we dont have to be swearing at each other we are a people of 130 million and less than 1 percent are bad eggs that wont make us a bad country no matter how bad it might be,and i think the person that posted the thread might not realise how sensitive it might be,sadly but true EVERY tribe is involved.

Happy Election to all of ya.
ONE NATION,ONE DESTINY,ONE PEOPLE.REP NIJJA ALWAYS.
PEACE.

its a pity we have shifted away from real issue. what mattered was that they nigerians arrested for fraud abroad, what are its causes, what can we do to stop or bring it to bear?

this is as a result of POVERTY, JOBLESSNESS, BAD INFLUENCE, BAD LEADERSHIP AND POOR ORIENTATION. by the way this crimes are more perpetrated by guys abroad and most of them come here to dupe.

Only God can reshape Nigeria.

please fellows, dont blame any tribe or yourself for this.

To those looking at the problem solely from a tribal angle, why not drive all Igbo people to the sea and Nigeria will become the Garden of Eden. Mental derangement sure comes in different forms and some people don't even have the faintest idea of their delirium.

This silliness will never end.  Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

NIGERIA is a country of many corrupt people from different tribes.

The corruption is of many kinds - stealing government money, kidnapping and demanding ransomes, credit card fraud, yahoo fraud, 419, bank fraud, child slavery & trafficking, intellectual property fraud, trafficking in human parts, etc.

For every name of one ethnic group you associate with one type of crime, there is another from a different ethnic group committing a different kind of crime.

If bashing one tribe for Nigeria's negative image makes y'all feel good, please go ahead, knowing that all this will not make an iota of difference to your own image as a Nigerian.

 Cool
There is nothing wrong stereotyping igbos as 419, the name must have started  in igbo land. All the people back home that I know that have done this kind of activities are all igbos. So, that doesn't make me feel bad. In a way it's actually interesting how some people get tricked into **** like that.

It's good that Oprah brought it up. Before I don't watch Oprah, because I thought she was white, until she started helping Blacks out. Maybe now white people and other dumb ******* out there will learn that Africa is a continent with many nations and Nigeria happens to have one of the smartest people ever.

I don't see anything wrong with 419, as long as they are not hurting any one physically. Most Igbo guys are smart and like to make it happen. I read on one the posts about the guy that was arrested in Houston that had $500,000 cold cash. He must  be some smart guy. The only thing I think he did wrong was allowing him self to get caught. I need to meet with people like that, of curse I will leave my wallet and money at home when meeting with those kind of people. I guess he is one of those guys that drive expensive cars with fat rims.

Most people I know in Portland think that education is everything. They end up living from pay check to pay check. Thats ****  ****. Nigerians in Portland, U.S. and other places need to grow up and learn some things from Black Americans. Most Nigerians are self centered that they focus on their personal wealth while their bro. next door is living in poverty.

I would advise anyone who thinks one tribe is wholly responsible for Nigeria's corrupt image to take the following link to EFCC's website and check the 'Most Wanted' list, which is compiled in partnership with international organistions.

http://www.efccnigeria.org

Of the 7 most wanted, 5 have Yoruba names, one has an Ibo name (and amusingly is the only one identified by Tribe), and one is from the North.

Would we then use this to draw a conclusion that the yoruba are the most involved in financial crimes? Probably not, because this would not be true.

one of the major tragedies of this our human experience is that its so hard to be objective. most especially when issues strike us close to where we live.

i know a lot of people are going to hit me hard for this but the truth is that even within this country all the big criminal ventures are undertaken by igbo men.

The onitsha drug market, who are the people behind it??? igbo people.  a significant proportion of the fake products we have in circulation in this country were either produced in the igbo industrial axis down in the southeast or imported from southeast asia by crooked igbo businessmen.

Okija shrine, na dem dey dere. if we are talking of armed robbery in lagos, its  desperate young igbo neverdowells that are usually paraded anytime the police decide to do their work.

All of you who haev actually lived in this country at any point in time, be honest with yourselves and dredge up memories of the lalst time you were duped, an iboman is most likely the one who sold you a dummy for the real thing.

The igbo tribe are itinerant by nature and will usually travel thousands of miles from their places of birth to make a living for themselves. this our technologically challenged african society is predicated on trust, we are supposed to do business by referrals since we dont have credit-databases/ social security numbers, etc. If i do business with you and i dont know your uncle or your big sister, you would probably be tempted to take all our dealings in bad faith and run away with my money, with the state of the economy and all.

The truth is that the average igboman leaves his father's village to go and cause trouble in far-off places, and he will do just about anything to get quick money.

@jockey112
nice one! I loved your 'fire triangle' analogy. removing the mugus from the equation will definitely help!

@peace4ever
you're addy clear example of people who encourage the spread of thievery, all in d name of 419. you claim u see nothing wrng with 419 as long as no one gets physically hurt. so what about the trauma of losing your entire life savings? a bricklayer in the UK hung himself some years back after being swindled of his life savings of £50000 by nigerians. or what about the old couple who got swindled by Nigerians and didn't have money to pay for heating bills during winter? they froze to death (saw dis in readers digest). what about the thousands that die in africa just because churchs and aid groups in the west are now wary of sending down money to african charities for fear of 419? what about the foreigners that are beaten and killed in lagos when they come aound to see what's up with their 'investments'?

@Backslider
when did I say there's no fraud in the US? please read my post again. it's not as if it's so hard to understand.

I'm currently in lagos, enjoying a much needed rest. i've been to about 5 cafes so far, and all of them are packed full with scammers yammer on and one about 'magas' and 'mailers', pausing only long enough to cast distrustful and suspicious looks in my direction. in the whole café with like 15 ppl, i'm the only non-scammer there. and that happens in all d cafés I've been since I got to afican lagos. some of these guys  are still in secondary school!

so much for the 'government not pproviding jobs' argument. . .

Really i dont know where to start, kudos to whoever started this thread by letting us here in 9ja know about how our image was maligned on the oprah show yesterday?I pray i get to watch that particular episode cause dstv subscribers here would have to wait a while to catch it on mnet! The issue of yahoo-yahoo and scams in 9ja has become a persistent occurrence and a matter of national cognisance, its true that at a time 419/scammers were not welcome in the society(they were seen as outcast THIEVES without arms!)but these days the Nigerian society has accepted them or what do you call the song by Nkem owoh:OYINBO MAN I GO CHOP YOUR DOLLAR?,and theres a yahoo song now singing the praises of yahoo boiz and even a yahoozee dance?!The situation is so appalling,I have a friend that his mum knows hes a scam artist(yahoo boy)he changed his car twice in a year(am talking flashy cars)he moved out and rented his own apartment somewhere on the outskirt of lagos and he harldy goes to college(paying people off to write exams and test for him) Huh Huh ???You see these young chaps everywhere and by their ways u shall know them?the society has accepted them because of the money they throw about, the incidence of poverty I still maintain is a major reason for 419 in 9ja,some quoted rightly in this thread that its young bright guys in a corrupt country!everyone one in one way or the other is corrupt and adding to 9ja's shame out there from the people at the helms of affairs in aso rock to the shanty peeps in the slums of ajegunle we are all corrupt!
My prayer is that with this democracy 9ja would oneday come of age amongst the older democratic nations of the world ,the situation would be turned around for good and we will come to see corruption and corrupt practice as a societal vice, proper law enforcement, improoved standard of education, provision of amenities&infrastructures, quality healthcare, even development in all regions of 9ja, am black and proud am Nigerian and proud too!In my own little way I have been and will still continue to contribute and do my best to remedy the situation and do things that make me proud to be Nigerian and want others irrespective of their nationality want to be associated with Nigeria, cause the truth of the matter is wether Oprah, fox,CNN or whatever news agency?they cannot do with out Nigerians,we make the news we make the world tick(the most populous african nation)we are blessed with natural and human resources?we are everywhere so LET THEM SAY cause we are truly a special race Cool

@ ziddy, your attempt to be 'objective', as you call it, demonstrates how narrow minded one can get in his small world.

1. Okay, accepting that the importation of fake goods is an 'igbo' crime (can bet you there are customs people of all tribes that are involved with this crime ring), what of other financial crimes committed in the UK (predominantly by another Nigerian tribe).

2. In the list of 'pen' thieves in Nigeria, are there only Igbo people?

3. The trafficking in children and human parts is not an Igbo crime.

4. Illegal prostitution in Italy and most of Europe is not an igbo crime.

5. Kidnapping and demanding ransome is clearly not carried out by your Igbo brothers.

6. Electoral fraud is not perpetrated by only the igbo man.

7. Terrorism and genocide are not igbo crimes.

8. 419 is not a crime perpetrated by Igbos alone.

I could go on and on and on,

All these crimes are a great disservice to our country and, together, are what give us the negative image we have. Grow out of your narrow mindedness and wake up to the reality of the Nigerian situation - we all work together to redeem an image all tribes have been involved in sullying.

Does everyone agree that this is probably the fastest moving thread on Nairaland to date? Just posted yesterday and we have about 8 pages of replies in less than 24hrs!! However, I guess its best to leave that statistic to Seun.

To the topic at hand, as Nigerians, we are all affected by this negative but actual reality. Though we all know who the masters of the trade are, to the Americans and indeed the rest of the world, we are all Nigerians and as such, possible fraudsters. Oprahs show on Nigeria surely will be a bitter pill to swallow but its a positve move towards ridding the world of of these miscreants. When the world becomes aware, it will get much more difficult for the yahoo yahoo boys to ply their trade and in time (hopefuly), look for other ways of earning an honest living. I might be aiming high here but unless something as drastic as Oprah has done, we will not see an end to this.

1 million Oprah shows will never solve this, don't get it twisted, its like saying showing 'crime fighters' on NTA will stop armed robbery, preposterous. The solution is zero tolerance in naija, by nigerians, and a clamp down on them by the police, as well as a true change of heart coupled with improved economic conditions as well as value system renewal in our dear country.

when all these will happen? like John Legend said 'Heaven Only Knows'  Sad
