Enough about what we feel about this advert. Why don't we hear from the horse's mouth? Can somebody please help us drag Professor Jewwy Gana into this forum so that we can know how his wife responds to the MTN advert?. Afterall...he was minister of (mis)information...

Actually I am indifferent to the advert.

At the same time, I think it is imaginative, at least for the guy to know that the sunshine is actually out there waiting for the girl. Nature is a gift.

Anyone noticed the chick on the Ad looked pregnant?  Not to mention the funny tune that seem to "Nigeriafy" the Ad eventually. I bet you never Imagined a home video soundtrack on a Jerry Springer show
Nevertheless, The Ad is cool in some other areas.

The ad is fake!! QED
Mamba, I think you just have a natural biff for this ad.  Either fake or not fake, ain't you happy that a company based in Nigeria can do such an ad?

I think the reason why you don't like this ad is just because you can send such a gift to your girlfriend. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I agree with you, Ra.  When we say Nigerians are not romantic, they start to yarn.  For the romantic ones like the four of us (Ra, femi & tilly & Pinky) let's keep it up.

I fell in love with the advert from Day 1.  It came out & I have not stopped loving it because of unromantic people on this board like ... well you are so many; I dare not start to mention your usernames LOL

Nature is indeed a gift and I think the advert is so romantic, albeit unrealistic. Watching the sun rise or go down is going a million steps closer to nature. It obviously gives the guy pleasure and him sharing what gives him joy with his girl is the issue. He didn't say for her to reach out and take it now, did he? My point exactly!

phew Ra Na you biko. Exactly my thinkin. Sunshine is a gift, its rising marks the beginning of a new day, every day has its splendid oppurtunities, so its a great gift to see the sun rise to give our lives a lift from the oblivion we all went int through the night. Jerry compared his girl to this gift and shared the view with her very romantic very creative. Lets forget that in this part of the world we are so accustomed to nature that we rarely treasure it  ( which may be why some say its unrealistic), but it makes a point. Way to go MTN.............!!!!!

All I can tell you guys is that the above advert is the fakest s**t advert I've ever seen on Nigerian TV.
No Nigerian chick is going to ever accept sunshine as a gift and be so happy like that.

All I'm trying to say is that the ad is ... well, WTF.

Why? The advert looks un-Nigerian. I want to agree with Mamba and others that no Nigerian girl is ever going to accept sunshine as a gift and be happy about it.  We all know why.

What makes an advert is portraying a situation within human reason but above daily occurencies. Just like movies, a movie show the life of an average human will be boring, but the hypes in the highs and the lows gives it a rythm same thing with advert, why not talk about the royco advert, the Delta soap advert, where a navy guy send soaps to "refurbish" his babes face a few days before their date. So lets give to MTN, no advert is actually ever Nigerian or Briton or American. Besides some Nigerian folks are that romantic.

Thanks a lot WesleyanA,.... let's show these guys there remain a few romantic Nigerian women. Not that they'll recognise romance if it bit them on the lips really, but we can always try!

I've never seen the ad but it looks and sounds pretty irritating to me. And I'd be pretty darned annoyed if my boyfriend rang and woke me up from sleep! Just to show me the sunrise and make sure his voice is the first I heard in the day! How self centred is that? Why not just marry the girl if you want your voice to be the first thing she hears? Angry
There is one word that can be used to describe that ad. And that is cheesy.

Well I read all the comments posted on the MTN sunshine ad and I was very surprised that there are some Nigerians out there that don't really appreciate the creativity and uniqueness of this classic Nigerian Ad.
I am a final year student of Communication Art, University of Ibadan and I am majoring in advertising and marketing communications. I have observed that over the years MTN has always produced mind thrilling and highly imaginative adverts that leaves everyone looking out for their next adverts!
Besides, I don't expect the ad to appeal to every Nigerian because it has a target audience which is depicted by the age range of the characters used in the ad.
In addition,  it is outrageously fallacious to conclude that the ad is fake or bad based on  the premise that such situations can't occur in a real life setting or that Nigerian ladies won't appreciate such a gift of nature! The reason is that in advertising, you either employ the emotional or the rational appeal!
It is not all adverts that employs the rational appeal. Most often, the emotional appeal is employed if the creative department finds it most effective in actualising the goals and objective of their clients.
I must add as an opinion that MTN is really doing a great job in terms of their advert concept. Their ability to create suspense coupled with their ability to project into the minds of their target audience and creatively bring into life their aspirations and dreams is such that would hold one spellbound and make you wish to have such a life!
I am currently writing my final year project on the use of emotional appeal in selected MTN adverts and this sunshine ad happens to be one of my favourite!
On a final note, Nature can only be appreciated by those who understands the value and uniqueness of finding true love!
Get hooked up! Cheesy
