I'm Scared Of Going To Nigeria

I love Nigeria with all my heart,its the best place you can have fun and feel alive, i don't support her way of composing the post but her aim of it was being scared, and insecure. What is wrong with that?? what is wrong with giving her some sisterly and brotherly advice?

In summer i'll be moving to another town in Norway, for my university right?? I'M FCUKING SCARED!! That's just a human feeling. I'm a whole lot excited, but i'm still nervous to the change of enviroment, you can't help wondering what its going to look like. On more than a 1001 occassions, i've asked friends who live there, what is it like?? how is this, how is that?? thats just life!! This is in the same country just another town not to talk of a whole different country.

Yes we know that Naija is the best, lovely and all that, but she doesn't, she had to build up thoughts on what people said

There was this thread on why our youths all want to travel out of the country(Nigeria) some will do anything humanly possible to achieve that, so tell me why?? Lets not all hide behind i love my country story!

Most of us are in europe, why the hell aren't we in Nigeria?? our dearly beloved country! Afterall there are schools in Nigeria, you can do business in Nigeria, so why aren't we?? Have we ever tried to fly bac to Nigeria and meet some air-port workers who said "no you can't travel back??

I hear some adults saying when i've made it money-wise i'll leave, some will say if not for the money, why will someone leave africa to come here and suffer?? well my dears if money wasn't all that important, why can't they just go back and live with whatever they see??

Please lets face facts here, we love our country so much, but there is still something however little it might be that we love to have been here

Many of us have various reasons for living outside the Nigeria we all proclaim to love.
- to make for ourselves and children a far better future than can be guaranteed by the Nigerian state
- just to be named among the "priviledged few" to have lived "abroad" - it is people in this class that quibble about insects, mosquitoes, starbucks and sushi.

It doesn't happen in Nigeria alone, but when you're moving to somewhere unfamiliar, life has a way of making it seem to you as if "that place" is the end of the world.
Tell me something if it wasn't Nigeria she was talking about, would we have been here making all these arguements??




Well thats just it, our fears sometimes blinds us to the realities of life, we tend to see things for what they're not.

I remember talking to my cousin last year, and i was like i prefer living in England to living in the Us, because ever since the tower incident i've been scared to death about the place. And he was like, well what about the train incident that happened in London. I now said, well i'll stay put in Norway, and then he finally said, "what makes you think Norway is anything more secured".

That was when i started thinking straight again!! FEARS OF LIFE!!


Just to prove that it goes both ways, what you're condemning someone else loves, and what you love, someone else doesn't necessarily have to love Its not a defensive attack of "my country, my country", everybody has their preferences!!

speaking about skools being in nigeria,there are nt as many schools in nigeria as there is in the US nd uk moreover not all the born americans nd those from the uk want to go to school,so if people want to study abroad and utilize the skools for them its nt because something is biting them in nigeria.it cud be for adventure/exploring or as davidlan has jst stated above.

who has time to go nd look for one little spoilt little girl to kidnapp.

may i advice choongtin to look below at the bottom of this page nd look out for "my first trip to nigeria"or somethin. breeze in go through the intro briefly then pick some courtesy from the gentle man that started the thread.

she should be lookin forward to making her stay worth while instead of complaining already.

Talking of being rude, I really agree with your parents taking you back homeHere they teach education and forget about respect. . Imagine, my 6years old cousin was going to school one morning, when they were leaving, the door was opened, so her mum told her to go and shut the door and she replied, Sorry, I can't. . . I was irritated. That was rude. . . I believe you will learn more about respect and manners in Nigeria.

If i can remember the girl's post correctly, she wrote down her fears, asked for help, advice and guidance and then asked if someone else have been in her shoes.

What's wrong in saying, what you heard about your country and mine isn't all true, give her a reason to look forward to her experience there. No matter how lovely weknow it is, she hasn't been there.

If living abroad has made her rude and non-challant, then so be it. Isn't that why she's being taken doen to Nigeria to learn some?? Her parents already told her that, so why can't we tell her something she doesn't know already??

I have been in her shoes, i was dragged down to naija at the age of 5, and even so young as i was it wasn't easy at all Being in the midst of a whole new world, you know nothing about their language, i couln't even speak English at the time, just Norwegian. I cried and cried and cried. I just my parents were just being wicked but today i couldn't thank them enough

But then i had to go, see and conquer to find that out. Lets give her a chance to do the same.

That was funny (now i understand why my parents dragged me there at the age of 5 ) I do get you though but everybody might adapt differently

In as much as i believe in the saying "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he'll not depart from it" and i have some friends too that have gone and come back the same

lets not forget the few that have changed some deal, even though i'm disciplined, respectful and all that (things i apparently learnt in naija) I came back to Norway at the age of 15+ but there are still some attitudes from naija that i've switched with some here

What i'm trying to say is that it might not be too late, atimes its all about choices, we can chosse to drop the bad attitudes and go for the better ones though we aren't used to them.

Her parents might have been a bit late, but better late than never, right??

Only thing I can hope for you is that you don't go to boarding school. That's pretty much it.

as for everything else, you'll get over it and adapt. Although AGAIN I don't know what took your parents so long. The whole "sending away to become a better person" usually works for younger children. Nigeria and the way of life is changing rapidly so i wouldnt be surprised if you came back worse.

don't worry, you'll be fine in Nigeria. Just leave all your prejudices behind in the UK and try to think with some empathy and you'll have a great time. Don't go with the mind of comparing evryhting in Nigeria to those in the UK unless your parents are very wealthy and as such you can afford anyhting you want. Truth is, there's nothing in the UK you can't have in Nigeria, it might just cost some more. It's best though to adapt to the country and the people.

I really don't know where to start with you. Look, I've tasted both sides and now know the differences. Before I came into the UK for my M.Sc last October, I used to think the place was all that. Right now, my eye don clear. I can't wait for September to run back to Nigeria. The place no just make am at all. Where did you hear that intelligent people don't get jobs? You've been listening to too many stories my dear. I'm tired of trying to make this clarification on nairaland. For me, for standard of living, the money I have in my pocket at the end of the month, the investments I can make with my money, the nice houses I can buy outright in 5 years and not 25 years etc makes Nigeria the place of choice. I think a lot of you guys abroad still look at Nigeria with  1990's eyes. My dear, I have a lot of friends who were average in the university who are very gainfully employed. And let me say they didn't have any connections before you start spitting that. In fact, I have a hard time trying to think of ONE out of my numerous friends in the university who is not doing very well. The guys that you visit their sites regularly (Deolu Akinyemi, Dipo Tepede, Emma Oluwatosin etc) were  and are still my good friends and and these were intelligent guys you can't say they are not doing well for themselves.
And you said no beaches!! What about Lekki, Alpha, Eleko, Bar beach, Badagry beach and a lot of smaller private beaches? Where are the good beaches in this UK sef? Seems it's a long time since you've been in Lagos for you to say that there's no variety in shopping. Dear, naija people are moving forward faster than you think. It's just a pity that the govt is not moving as fast as the people.
please don't come for NYSC o, with your attitude you'll only be miserable and make others around you miserable too. There are enough people who can do it in Nigeria ok?

Last word: I think it will be better for you if you let go of your prejudices about Nigeria because no matter what you say, it's obvious from your postings that you're prejudiced.

Skin color has nothing to do with this. I didnt even know if she was pink or purple until much much later. I doesnt cross my mind that she may think she's better than me, i know she isnt!
When you criticise Nigeria, don't mention things like insects, sushi, mosquitoes and crime as reasons for disliking Nigeria! I still saw a black ant in my pad last night and last ii checked even some Americans don't like sushi!

My uncle, read Chemical Engineering in Ife, since Ife being the useless stupid school that it is known for it';s constant strikes, he was there for 7 and a half years, he now works in a bank.

who studies all that for so much time to work in a damn bank? and the people who read garbage take all these jobs from those who actually read something good. You have people who studied Communication working in Oil Companies while those who spent more than 5 years slavcng away are in lower positions, it's not fair

Not saying it happens to everyone but it happens and I'm not going to be an idiot and deny that all in the name of trying to make us look good. I love Nigeria and unless I tell a person they never really know that i've spent 16 years in The States and only 7 in Nigeria but Nigeria will always be the country I mention but like i said, i don't ignore the problems.

I thought I was having an exchange with someone who is worth my time but based on that last post, I'm sorry to say, I doubt it. It's so sad that even after having left Nigeria, you can still be so ignorant to make that post. If you don't know, you exposed yourself with it and a lot of people will now know what you actually carry upstairs.
