It won't hurt 2 use good English but slangs n other unconventional usages r more convenient 4 d fun of it n well 4 people like me typin ease because i use a mobile. What actually is funny about this thread is dt right from d 1 who started it almost everyone keep makin mistakes in lexis, grammar, punctuation, deliberately or not. This goes 2 show d good English thing go hard small.

Personally, I use slang in my posts but I do so with a difference.
I either enclose the slangs in quote -- like "bad-belle" or I put an asterisk after it and make a translation footnote at the bottom -- for example
e don spoil*
Translation: It is spoilt.

Totally wrong to make it compulsory to use good english on this site, if i may ask if this was a chinese, spanish or italian site we dey be using english talkless of a good english? if you think about the kids what about all the nigerian languages, the fishermen, market women, our elderlyones, even pidgin enlgish is more better than good english for this site. This is a nigerian site we are all proud of and we should be thinking of developing it into most nigeria languages and not good english.

It is interesting that this thread has taken the rather circuitous route from where the well-intentioned originator began it to where it is at this point.
Many good points have been brought up along the way. The thrust of the thread is that proper English should be used to reinforce its being learned. Certainly, English is the official language of Nigeria, and it is one of the more commonly spoken languages in the world. That so many people speak any common tongue gives that language a strength to not only communicate to many people but to express a wealth of ideas in multitude of ways.
It must be considered that, while colloquial, dialectical and slang usages surely have their places in the language--indeed, one can safely say that it is these infusions that give a language its vibrancy and life (for no language is static)--it is the proper basis of the language that is the most binding and uniting of all. It is for this reason that we must use a language in its most advantageous manner.
Proper English is not dry, stilted or boring. Far from it. Rather, it's the source of all the richness that comes from it in all of its variegated manifestations. More to the point, as the most common source of the language, it's also the most stable. Not unchanging, mind you, but stable. As such, whatever is expressed in it will be understood by the most possible number of people who use that language, no matter where they are (geographically) and no matter what their status or circumstance (socially, economically or politically). Since we all have something to say, it is imperative that the things we do say are available to be understood by as many people as possible.
That is why we should use the most proper, unadulterated form of whatever language we use, in our case, English.
I apologize if the length of this post has proved to be compromising to some, but I feel its length is justified by the nature of the topic.

I completely agree with Lotuken and drrionelli. We are all native speakers of English language and should be proud of it. Speak it correctly and slang it (Pidgin) when circumstances call for it. By speaking good English, we not only show the rest of the none English speaking countries that we have a good grasp as native speakers but also to feel completely and absolutely at ease speaking it among other native speakers; in other words citizens of other English speaking countries.

You're absolutely right, Blackcat! Quite simply, proper use of the language is the most efficient mode we have to convey and exchange our ideas within it.

The English language is a foreign language! I've been to almost all european countries. Its quite rare u find someone that understands English let alone speak. Even Asian countries speak their native respective languages. Why shouldn't we be proud of ours.
Poland: Polish Germany: German France: French Spain: Spanish Italy: Italianish Czech: Czechish Holland: Netherlang, a little German and English last Denmark: Danish China: Chinese (No English) Japan: Japanese India: Indian lang first then English
NIGERIA: Why the f**k English? This b**tch is a foreign lang and i wonder why a black man should carry this on his head as is if his great grand father started speaking it first.

All these people talking so much shit about "english being the most widely understood language," THIS IS NAIRALAND,
a place where basically nigerians meet. More people in nigeria understand and can communicate better in pidgen english
than english. It is the preferred language in Nigeria for gisting, yabing etc.
Good english sounds too formal and boring and should be left for official business and schools.
Kids or anyone whosoever that wants to learn english should go to the library and pick up some english literature.
Leave nairaland for real Nigerians!!!

dude,i think you should check and re check your first post as there are some mistakes as well, between this site is a hangout spot so if i decide to speak pidgin english, yoruba, hausa or ibo doesnt matter as long as im understood, lets get off the whole colonial hangover and speak what we r comfortable with, the francophone parts of africa don't speak a word of english yet they r sucessful with whaeva they do,the indians only speak english when they have to,same as the orientals so whats the big deal, in a work place its always the nigerian that will wear a three piece suit and tie when the head of the company is on a simple shirt and trousers, lol
