You people are right, but I earnestly believe that Nigerian (African) Youths are better off acquiring and applying the freely available knowledge about technology than wasting their time lamenting over the bad things that may have happened to their forefathers.
Let's just pick up our bootstraps and strive to prosper with what we have now. Like the Jews. They don't sit around lamenting about the bad things that happened to their ancestors. They simply use what they have now to get what they want. I like that.

These things still do have their effects today, or do you think it is just a fluke of nature that e.g. Shell happens to be an Anglo-Dutch company and not a Nigerian one. interesting thread. thought i should drop this: just last night, on my way back from a nigerian party with my chinese housemate, she confessed in the past she had been terribly afraid of black people. when she sees them, she moves the other way. but since she's been living with me and another black girl, she's changed her believe about them. and yeah Seun is geek  . geeks don't care about history. |

Are blacks inferior?
Let's define the word first of all before we go on.
1. Poor or poorer in quality
2. Low or lower in value, rank or status
Since God created all man in his image, I deduce that we are not inferior in terms of quality. We have blacks competing in all spheres of life all over the world and they are excelling. But in terms of Value, Rank and Status we are INFERIOR. Take or leave it. Our orientation in life are not the same. Whose fault is it? We just have to accept the fact and think of how to improve but unfortunately, our leaders are busy stealing our millions and stashing them in the white man country. Just ask an average Nigerian graduate of computer science how many times he was opportuned to handle a computer in his school lab (that's if his school has computers). We shouldn't live under any illusion! It doesn't mean we shouldn't be proud. I lift my shoulders high anywhere I travel to 'because I am a proud black African doing legit business back in Naija. I believe in giving honour to whom it is due.

really interesting thread you have here. i am noticing a certain trend even in the united states, over 40-50 years ago we were up in arms against segregation according to race. today we may not be facing that issue but why is it that most white people tend to be "extremely" nice to you when they notice you are black to the point of being patronizing? are they being sorry for the ignorant actions of their forefathers or is it just another form of racism?
my cousin just got a high profile job in the US simply because she was one black of over 80 individuals who took the interview!
My girlfriend is white, all of a sudden her friends are "concerned" about her safety! Where were they when she was dating white geeks? she's yet to give me a cogent answer.
I never took racism seriously until i came to this nation and realised that it is still very much alive and kicking, 90% of jail inmates in my town are black, 9 out of 10 violent crimes on the news is by black people, while violent white crimes are glorified through CSI, NCIS, black crimes are vilified as gang or drug-related crimes on tv.
This has only reinforced my belief that I am proud of who i am and where i come from, if africa is poor and underdeveloped today it is because of the colonial pig heads who came and ruined our beautiful culture and raped our land. We are the only continent on earth who do not have the priviledge of having naturally evolved it's own nations states (berlin 1886, partitioning of africa!).
what we have today in the name of "nations" is the eiquivalent of having germans and french people in the same nation or jews, germans and arabs as "ethnic tribes" in the same geographical enclave!
Why does anyone then wonder why africa is a continent perenially at war?

they can say what they like, it's like water off a duck's back for me. the most important thing is going back home to develop our continent, thousands of black people in the states here are making us proud daily. we have proved beyond reasonable doubt that we do not have a low IQ, let us go back home join hands together to build a stronger africa that we can all be proud of. so long as we keep depending on other races to think for us and settle our problems, they will always think of themselves as superior. I think some blacks today living in places predominantly populated by other races are the cause of what is happening to them. In one of my under graduate political science claas. I was the only black guy there and the professor has to open mouth to say that blacks commit the highest rate of crime in the united states. I was personally touched even though this could be true. Infact i ended up writing a term paper in defense of the blacks. The teacher was aware that i was writting it to infuriate him. He replied to me to ginger his ealier stance but this really got to my nerves. I can still see racial bias in places like america against the blacks but this notion can be changed especially in nigeria. If nigerians are provided with the same oppurtunity with their counter parts abroad. I bet there are many people like emegwali dying in nigeria. people like chinua achebe and wole soyinka. One thing with america is that when u r powerful, they want you to belong to them. But our people don't see life this way. Look at emegwali, achebe and other powerful nigerian men. They all live in america and helping this greedy nation. What else would u do? For nigeria to change, it needs me and you. It needs to start from little things like this. Nigeria is bad and corrupt and don't be surprise that if achebe and emegwali is in nigeria, some people might have attempted to kill them. Who knows countless number of murder attempt against wole soyinka? ? He lives in nigeria and I love this man to the last drop of my blood. For nigeria to be powerful we really need to look at this from a global and marginalized view like this...  |
