Nigeria, U.S Sign Pact On Regional Security
Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:43 Abiodun Oluwarotimi, Washington D.C

In the bid to further strengthen the security system in the Niger Delta region, the United States of America (USA) has signed a bi-national agreement on regional security with Nigeria.

The signing which took place in Washington D.C yesterday at the chambers of the United States Council on Foreign Relations had the attendance of Nigeria's Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Professor Ade Ibidapo Adefuye and other dignitaries from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Niger Delta and Defence.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Martin Uhomoibhi signed the regional security agreement on behalf of  Nigerian government, while Johnie Carson, U.S Assistant Secretary on African Affairs signed on behalf of the United States government.

Speaking during the event, Uhomoibhi said European colonisation of Africa and its antithesis of Pan Africanism provides the historical context for understanding the evolution of Nigeria's post-independence security and foreign policies in Africa.

He further stated that Nigeria was actively involved in efforts to secure and build peace in Africa, stressing that Nigeria's Afro-centric foreign and security policies have manifested in various ways including playing leading roles in the creation of Organisation of Africa Unity, OAU, New Partnership for Africa’s Development, NEPAD and the African Union, AU.

Using the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS as a regional security vehicle, he said Nigeria has provided strong leadership in regional peace efforts in West Africa, notably in Liberia and Sierra Leone from the late 80’s to early 2000.

He noted that Nigeria has also been actively involved in various peace and conflict resolution initiatives across Africa, including Chad, Darfur, Somalia, Congo and others.

He continued that the ideological and political impetus for Nigeria's regional security policy derived from fundamental commitments in the Nigeria’s constitution  which prescribes for the country’s five key objectives to pursue on the world stage.

"Despite the evolution of Nigeria's foreign objectives over the years, the basic organising principle, deriving from constitutional obligations, has centred on the notion of the four concentric circles of national interest" he added.

In his reaction, the United States Assistant Secretary on African Affairs, Mr. Johnie Carson, said the regional Security Bi-National pact was very critical since conflict mitigation is one of the top policies for Africa.

It really is saddening this is a serious matter that i cant believe these people on this form is disregarding all in the name of wasted tribalism. Also it makes you wonder how unaware GJ is of something that Yaradua was aware of and condemned. How can "president" GJ allow this kind of deal even after the fact that it was just recent that the U.S. reguired nigeria to have U.S. Air Marshals on every flight to the U.S. What a push-over embarassed

The plan is to gain physical control of the resources of not only nigeria but africa as a whole. Watch the video and see how much oil the U.S. gets from nigeria alone. Also, thats why they havent allowed nigeria to split and come 2015 they will make nigeria slit once this Africom deployment is fully established and they have complete comtrol either way:

This could be a blessing in disguise. Look how rich Kuwait compared to the rest of the Arab World with their friendship with the U.S.

And bk.babe97y you should be bowing down to your new masters. Do the Arab princes bow down to America? No. . . That is because they have the oil!

Keep in mind I am also an American citizen. . .

Abeg make una leave matter. All these conspiracy theory loving scumbags that furiously condemn the Western world and exalt african despots like Mugabe and Ghadaffi.
I despise these people with a passion. You remain silent on the rapes in Congo, famine in Zimbabwe, genocide in Darfur and human rights abuses in Guinea, yet you fly into a paroxysm of rage and jump at any opportunity to denounce the west.

This is not in support of the West or anything like that, but if your underlying motive is rooted in love for Africa, then be consistent!

It is also amusing seeing people worry about a vague western re-colonization but fail to see anything weird in the increasing radicalization of Northern Nigeria. How many topics did @chyz open when Al Qaeda started mentioning Nigeria in his infrequent tirades?

Senseless . I lived in South Korea for 8years, their economy is booming today because of their alliance.
South Korea is a very small country, yet they have about 37,000 American soldiers thats excluding the larger American community in the country. Someone mentioned kuwait, having US military in Nigeria can turn arround a whole lot of things. And yes ofcourse, advantages goes with some disadvantages, the countries that have this kind of relationship are better off compared to where we are today.

@some of u here
Stop insulting our president ignorantly in your ignorance.

Those of you who are happy with this development are clueless. Those of you who say Nigeria will benefit because other countries that harbour USA troops have benefited are simply ignorant. South Korea did not benefit from usa because they have a base there but because they have good leaders ,good inovators and a strong will to be the best.

The US Government does not give a damn about our country and this move has probably ensured that our economy is under their control for a long time to come. It is unfortunate that we have clowns as leaders. Our leaders did not sit down and think about the long time consequence of this agreement.

Last year the USA made a similar offer to the South African Government citing the upcoming world cup as a reason for SA to allow them in but the South Africans cleverly declined the offer stating that they are more than capable to defend their turf.

I just hope that this agreement does not give them too much power because if it does we are in for a lot of trouble and it won’t be long before young Nigerians become terrorists. We have had enough with BOKO HARAM already ,we don't want the Niger Delta to become like iraq.

Chyz the one mistake you have made is to assume that the likes of Jonathan and his cronies are not in on this AFRICOM deal. The truth is nigerian politicians do not really have any real power when it comes to the foreign multinationals, take it from me when i say that nigeria is now being run by shell, exxon mobil and chevron - the nigerian govt is merely an agent for these multinational organisations. If you look at the way multinationals operate you will understand that by virtue of their financial might as well as the military backing that they receive from their countries of origin - (in this instance the US and Britain), they control the economy as well as the internal politics of of any nation that they are intrested in controlling.

Its not just in nigeria that you find this type of situation - it is all over the world. Look at the US govt and its relationship with multinational organisations, banks and other major corporations, these powerful organisations control congress by way of lobby groups who spend billions of dollars bribing and co-opting congress to pass bills that protect and safeguard their interests.

Therefore if these foreign multinationals can control their own govt, is it the nigerian govt that they won't be able to control and co-opt? Jonathan is very much aware of the implications of this so called regional security pact, you should ask yourself why the americans went out of their way to facilitate his rise to power. The bitter truth is that he agreed to do what Yaradua would not do - accelerate the sale of our public services to foreign owned companies for chicken change.

Now the americans have selected their preferred candidate for the presidency - IBB, everything has been predetermined as far as nigeria's presidency is concerned - the americans want someone who will allow them to continue to loot and plunder our natural resources and that person is IBB. The Africom deal has sealed nigeria's fate because we will soon officially become a continent occupied by foreign troops. No country which is occupied by foreign troops ever regains its sovereignty without going to war.

Some people are not following trends in the world.

1. US subtly occupied S.Korea after putting in them fear of the north an offered to protect them against the north.  Though much of the fear was founded because the north already adopted communism which many people were against.  Most S.Koreans are not happy being separated from their kith and kin in the north.

2. recently the prime minister of japan resigned because in his electioneering campaign he promised to remove the US. after winning he couldn't do it and he resigned after being on the seat for less than a year. admitting he couldn't deliver on his promises.

3. Long before the Iraqi's occupation of Kuwait their has been threats (same as what is happening between china and taiwan) and the Kuwaitis knowing fully well they cant withstand the Iraqi military decided to romance with the Americans to keep the Iraqis at bay.

4. Also recently in order to finally clip the wings of the Russians the Americans wanted to set up base in Georgia or any of the former Soviet republics.  The Russians (dem no dull at all) used the little misunderstanding to show they are still ready.

Nigeria that claims to be the giant of Africa, now needs the US
Who is a threat to Nigeria that we need the might of the US to keep at bay?
After all the peace keeping operations and big brother claims, so we now need the US military to survive?
What is "notion of four concentric circles? Useless big grammar  angry

The industrialization and progress you are seeing in Korea started after the war which the US supported people with like minds to be together (agreed) that is, the capitalist, people who were against communism.  Please can you tell me the people we need to be liberated from to enable us progress?

Secondly the prime minister of japan is not my friend, i was only pointing out that people who have been romancing with the US militarily are trying to get out while Nigeria is going in. It's called "bowing out honourably." Not like our sit tight politicians who can't deliver on their promises but want to remain in the seat forever.

If you don't have any sensible contribution, you are free to continue dreaming.  At least i know that is one freedom people don't need to fight for.

With the establishment of AFRICOM, the Pentagon attempts to increase access to Nigeria's oil and to wage a new front in the Global War on Terror without regard for the needs or desires of Nigerian people. Enabled by oil companies and private military contractors, AFRICOM serves as the latest frontier in military expansionism, violating the human rights and civil liberties of Nigerians who have voiced a strong "no" to U.S. military presence. We should reject this militarization of foreign engagement.

Thanks chyz, the information is out there but its up to us as a people to educate ourselves and understand what we are up against , time is fast running out and the oyibo man is intent on consolidating his position of power in the world, many of us need a complete overhaul in terms of our way of thinking, first of all we need to get rid of this fallacy that the west is our friend, they have never been and never will be our friends, america and britain are imperialists nations their main objective is to consolidate their economic, political and ideological supremacy in  the world.  many black people do not understand that we are at war with them albeit a covert war whcih is being fought on so many different fronts - economic, political and ideological.  They control us economically through their imperialist financial institutions such as the world bank and the imf, they control us politically by using saboteur agents like IBB, Obasanjo and others  to implement economic policies which impoverish the vast majority of ordinary nigerians and enrich a select few who choose to sell out their own people,  they control us ideologically through our educational system which teaches us that everything western is superior and everything african is inferior, they control us through religion which teaches us to be docile, passive and hope for a better life after we die, whereas the white man knows that if you can't live a decent life on earth now, you might as well be dead.
If you sit down and analyse our situation you will find out that we are an enslaved people.

The only way AFRICOM can be prevented from establishing on the african continent is through concerted organised resistance by african people, if you look at what has happened AFRICOM has been let in through the back door by useless saboteurs who do not care about the implications of this very serious action.  How can you call yourself a sovereign nation when you have foreign troops in huge numbers located permanently in your territory.  commonsense should tell you that if the country that sent those foreign troops so desire they can overthrow any govt on that continent that does not go along with their economic policies.  Its not as if america does not have a track record of doing such things in the past.  Its just that our people do not like to read and know what is going on in the world,if we were a curious people we would understand the true motive behind africom - RECOLONISATION OF AFRICA AND ITS NATURAL RESOURCES.
Its time to wake  up and stop reasoning like simpletons, we are at war with these people.

This is a serious probably and if you really knew how serious im taking this you wouldn't believe it. I wish we Africans weren't so quick to call anything proving the conniving scheme of white imperialist countries a conspiracy theory. For the average civilian in Africa I can blame them so much as I blame those African politicians and political conscious students who know of such a threat but don't care to do anything about it. The problem is as Africans we as a people only worry about now and couldnt careless of thinking about later or the next person. I praised yaradua for his out right rejection of it but we all see what happened to him because of it. I guess its time to go to these embassies(African) and start making noise but i doubt that will work. I applaud the arabs to an extent, on their bravery in physically fighting to end US occupation in their countries although alot of them were too late and its hard to get them out once they are already in. Now we Africans know of it before it lands(well nigeria is doomed now) but our leaders are too greedy and selfish to care.

Could we not have seeked security help from the African Union(AU) or ECOWAS? If not then what is the need of them? SMH.

I recommend that you and everybody here, if you haven't already, read this book: How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney. A very powerful man and revealed so much truth that he was assassinated to stop African nations from strengthening and having Uniting.

How many of us know that the US government is planing to take over Africa's wealth and remove by any means all who appose or don't appose to get at what ever they think they should have? While every one is glad to see a person of color in the white house, this is a great deception as part of the plan to continue to go under cover of so-called help to Africa by U.S. military forces to take oil and any thing else with out the people of the land receiving any thing but death for their land. The code name is "Africom"  This should be our major concern, there is nothing more pressing at this point in time of our collective history. Don't let yourself and other family members be hoodwinked into continuing to fight a War that is not ours as we have been doing for the past 500 years, helping a enemy destroy what is our own.  In 2005 the European Union met secretly in Geneva and decided that they must kill off 300 Million souls or people.  Just who do you think they are talking about?  Many will perish opposing Africom and other diabolical plans that have been made in secret.
