THE wreckage of a private helicopter carrying a wealthy supporter of Chelsea Football Club and three other people has been found. Police have confirmed four bodies were found in the felled helicopter but they have not yet been formally identified. The helicopter left John Lennon Airport in Liverpool following last night's Champions League clash between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield. The twin engine Squirrel helicopter was heading to a private landing site near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, when it disappeared at about 12.30am. One of the passengers was thought to be businessman Phillip Carter, 44. He is the founder of fast-growing training company Carter & Carter and an honorary vice president of Chelsea Football Club. The pilot is thought to be Stephen Holdich, co-owner of operating company Atlas Helicopters, of Hampshire. Chelsea officials were initially reported to be on board but the football club has said all their club officials are accounted for. After a huge hunt, the wreckage has been found in woodland near Wansford, Cambridgeshire, by passing aircraft. Det Supt John Raine said the helicopter was 'largely in tact' with 'no obvious sign' of the cause of the crash. Four bodies were found inside which will be moved later today. Det Supt Raine said family liaison officers have been sent to visit the families who have reported people missing. The incident stirs memories of the October 1996 crash which killed Chelsea’s vice-chairman Matthew Harding and four other men as they returned from a Bolton Wanderers match. An awful tragedy. Unfortunately, helicopters are so small and vulnerable that when they crash, it is a miracle if anybody survives. May they rest in peace.
