I work as a Geologist in a Chinese company with headquarter in Kaduna and branches in many states. Our department is involved in water supply services: geotechnical investigation, geophysical survey to locate ground water, borehole drilling, construction of reservoir, pipeline etc. Also, I have my own firm. If you are in need of any of the following services: geophysical survey for groundwater, borehole drilling, pump testing, pump installation, construction of steel tanks, dont hesitate to contact me on 08035995819

@dikwons, It is true that higher degrees are needed in Geo-related jobs, however, there are many entry-level geo jobs like the recent ExxonMobil, Chevron, Haliburton vacancies. The best thing to do now is to upgrade yourself in terms of training, MSC , PhD ,if you have the resources(money). The software training would also be helpful. Softwares like Petrel, Geographix, Geoframe, etc. are very important in the oil industries today. I am sure that if you have these software trainings, companies will need you to work with them. Good luck

@aeon. yes you have moved but you are a trained geoscientist. That is the reason you identified with us by posting your comment. Remember you should not neglect your little beginning. There are areas of your present job in business development that will still need your knowledge of geoscience, except you are not working in a geoscience-related company.Geoscience is a sweet profession!

@Dikwons

Geologists should know how to use a graphic software like Canvas, Illustrator or Xara Xtreme. It does help if you can get someone to teach you how to use oil industry standard software like petrel BUT your reports and presentations would not be greatly appreciated if you do not produce nice drawings to buttress your points.

Whilst you are waiting for that nice job or still a student learn how to use MS PowerPoint very well. You would be amazed how little a lot of people know about this software. These are simple things that let you stand out and is relevant in any industry (Oil, Solid Minerals or Academics).

Oh yes, an MSc is becoming standard these days as well. . . Good luck in your search!

@ aduhube, My school has the Petrel License and i was able to use it effectively when i represnented my school for the AAPG Imperial Barrel Award. there are some NIgerian Universities that also register for the AAPG/IBA competition. I was trained to use GeoGrapix when i did my internship with one of the oil companies. The professors in most of the schools in the states has license for all these Geologic/Geophysics softwares so you have direct access to it if you work under any of them for your thesis
Getting to do your Masters in the states just involves doing the GRE and applying. though the first semester might be expensive but after the first semester you can be given a teaching associate which makes you teach while you are in school and you get paid for it and you also have reduction in tuition (you start to pay the same tuition the US citizens are paying after you are given the teaching associate position. You can also be lucky that your advisor might decide to pay your tuition, so you dont have to pay for anything than to study and do your thesis but you will work with your advisor in all his research which is a good one for your resume. One other thing is that you dont pay for your thesis like is been done in Nigeria, your advisor pays for everything. Finally in order to boost your profile, you will need to present your research in alot of conferences (this will open alot of doors for you, especially in the oil companies)

I hope i have been ableto tell you all what you need.
All the best. Cheers

Re: Geologists And Mining Engrs: Let's Talk Here by sanchymike: 12:21pm On Oct 01, 2010
@aduhube, it all depends on the school, you can pay bewteen $5,000-$10,000 as the first semester tuition,

@ow11. Thanks for the inspiring advice. God is working with you.

Anytime brother. . A Software is just a tool to do a job. If you are lacking in principles, you won't impress in an interview. Anyone can become conversant with Petrel or Geographix after 2 or 3 days. It is not a big deal. Focus on understanding the general principles behind predictions and learn to present your argument in a smart manner and you are set to go.

thank you ,this issue is long overdue cos we geoscientists are segregated in the sense that we are not giving any consideration when we try to look for alternative employment in other sector.in our sector self we are overlooked so where do we belong. i'm a geophysics graduate
Re: Geologists And Mining Engrs: Let's Talk Here by aduhube: 4:05am On Oct 10, 2010
@Akandea remember that the future energy rests with the geoscientists. We are still very relevant. The recent local content act, if fully implemented would offer us great opportunity. Live up, do not give up.Goodluck
