Nigerian Government To Ban Same-Sex Marriage!

Nigerian President initiated a move against same sex marriage, Minister for Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Bayo Ojo (SAN), presented the bill to the FEC seeking a five-year jail term for offenders and people who aid and support such act in any way and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday (Jan. 18, 2006) gave approval for the bill.

The minister said "same-sex relationships and marriages are un-African and an erosion of the culture of the people."

Poujadism of the worst sort. I sincerely hope that Nigeria is not going to follow the enlightened examples of Zimbabwe and Kenya in that regard.

It's worse than what you think.  They are also banning same-sex relationships.

"Section seven provides for offences. And it is an offence for anybody to contract a marriage or have a relationship with a person of the same sex. If you do, it will carry a sentence of five years imprisonment without the option of fine and similarly if you aid or support in any way for anybody of the same sex to contract a relationship or marriage, it will also attract five years imprisonment."

Don't these people have better things to do with their time, like reforming the prison system instead of cooking up more reasons to put people in prison?  Angry

there are implications that transcend the personal (health, inheritance, ...) if you were to marry your mother. This is not the case for same-sex marriages

This is exactly my point. Divert the attention from what is really important (the economy, public services, ...) and rally the people behind a useless cause. Goebbels would have been proud. Machiavelli is nodding from his grave

Why not execute them outright? Just get rid of those degenerates. And while you're at it, why don't you go and imprison all those straight couples that are into unnatural sex, such as oral or anal sex. Maybe you could ban kissing as well, after all, the mouth was meant to take in food, not for exchanging bodily fluids

They are not just banning same-sex marriage, they are banning same-sex relationships and making them punishable by five years imprisonment without the option of a fine.  In addition, anyone who merely encourages someone to enter into a same-sex relationship (by being understanding) is also going to be punished with 5 years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Is that really justified?  How come adultery and fornication are not punishable by imprisonment?  Afterall they are sins that are corrupting the moral fabric of our immoral society too, aren't they?  This is food for satire.

Isn't it funny that a society as corrupt as Nigeria is taking the "lead" in dealing with the "problem" growing "immorality" in Africa?  If we were so "moral" then why are there so many thieves among our political, religious and social leaders?  And why is nobody proposing a ban against fornication and adultery?

And while we're at it, what about lying?  2 years imprisonment for a white lie, and 10 for a black lie?

Do you know that there are so many gays and lesbians in Nigeria?  If we were to empty all the prisons in Nigeria order to accomodate all the gays and lesbians in Nigeria, the space would not be enough to contain even a small fraction of them.  So we should throw them all in prison?  That is so absurd, mate.

Instead of doing their jobs, these people are trying to confuse us by appealing to our emotions.

This is about reducing the immorality rate in nigeria.
We have enough problems already, we don't need another one adding to it.
Its bad enough that all what u've mentioned is going on. Thats exactly why we shouldnt encorage it further.
Its a huge pity u can't see that.

Yes we know folks are already corrupt and fornication and adultery is everywhere.
so for that reason, we should encourage more immorality abi? while most institutions are trying to cut down the immorality rate we should encourage same sex because people commit fornication so soon sex with animals will  be the oreder of the day

BLATANT NONSENSE!

It's a pity some Nigerians could speak in favour of same sex relationship. I believe that all those that even partake in it have twisted minds! Where have all the morals gone to? Some say it's freedom to associate. May be the next freedom bus stop they would get to is THE RIGHT TO COPULATE WITH ANY LIVING (BEAST, INSECT, BIRDS). It is this same excessive freedom that has taken the western world to the highest level of immorality and all itS associated ills! Parents can not discipline their kids, a boy can wake up one day and decide to shoot as many people as he can in his school or on the street.

I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT THE DIRTY THINGS THAT PARTAKE IN THESE DISGUSTING ACTS SHOULD BE STONED TO DEATH.  Freedom has really made some people go bananas! YAK!  I am already throwing up.

Abomination is abomination, no two ways about it. *Sodom abd Gomorah* don't we fear GOD ALMIGHTY?
Anyway, if you know how to pound do it inside mortar if not the ground is always available. God created women to be attractive yet some men (gay) did not appreaciate the work of God.They will still answer the question when the time comes. Period!!!!!!

yeah and while they're at it they should add adultery and fornication to that bill. They shouldn't stop there underage sex, masturbation, prostitution and watching pornography should also be outlawed..

You Nigerians out there, please note that a RIVER THAT FORGETS IT SOURCE WILL DEFINITELY DRY UP.
I believe we Africans were brought up with high moral standards, so why all the dirty talk?  Can you go to the market square in your village and pronounce your support for such a disgusting act? [color=#990000]NO!!!!!!!!
But you can do it in Belgium. To me it's part of what I call hypocrisy and cowardice!!!!!!

The fact that we're already immoral does not mean we should continue to be immoral. They have taken one good step, at least, for a start, and you're complaining. I'm not surprised at all.

Personally, I don't think putting them in prisons willl solve anything.  They should find better ways of banning the act instead of putting them in prisons. It just shouldn't be allowed.

OK, this is at least an attempt to present an argument.
Why do you think same-sex relationships are in any way comparable to making love to your mother?

Define morality and the source of your morality. I wonder how African these sources would be? Imported religious bigotry is likely closer to the truth
