honestly u guys are wastin g your time delibrating on this issue.its already passed into and theres nothing u and i can do. if u are not ok by the law, please i am begging u to violate it plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and end up in sanko. ok,since some people are irrational, why is armed robbery, stealling and exam malpractice etc bad.since in stealling its the movement of items from places of abundance to places or scarcity, exam malpractice is helping yourself to pass so that your parents money wont be a waste. so if u wnt to kick against ban on gay abeg start with these laws because some people hav been surffring because the hav that stealling blood in them, hahahahahahahahaha, yeye people

You could be one and not know it. Yours is the highest post on this thread. Your like the defense attorney. And i hear it started this way with some people. First they think they were straight but little defenses like this begins to bring out the true them. And before you know it, they realise their true identity.
I have never been attracted to men in my life. This just doesn't apply Do u know that even some married people turn out gay even after marriage. You may want to check yourself
They don't turn out to be gay, they were gay before they got married, they only didn't want to face the reality of their sexual orientation, and that is quite understandable in a hostile environment. Those people are usually also the first to condemn open homosexuals. How many preachers in the US didn't turn out to be gay, even though they held fire-and-brimstone speeches against gays before being caught. Quite a few. I am perfectly happy in my hetero-sexuality, thank you. Its also surprising that you of all people would asssociate "idocy" with being gay
The idiocy is assuming that I'm gay because I defend the basic human right of gay people.

@ CHOCHORI, please read the thread. This difference has already been discussed over and over again In short: * homosexual couples are not causing any harm on anyone. They are consenting adults. * rape, murder, stealing, etc cause immense harm to people

Nigerian, we always talk out of both sides of our mouths. You are talking and voting. Your talk at this point, burn the witches, your vote leave them alone. At this moment your vote says 46% for a jail sentence and 53 against a jail sentence. Yet look at the ratio of your talk 90% for jail sentence and 10% against jail sentence.
I guess rhetoric is good until you face reality.
I agree with Nferyn, too many people are walking around with repressed attitudes and doing the bandwagon effect. Until you are honest with yourself, you will not live an honest life.
On the earlier subject of Freewilly who was gay, I showed her all the reasons why it was wrong but I do not think she deserves to go to jail because of her beliefs. Like earlier said next it will be Moslems/Christians, then alcoholics, then people with a different point of view. Good luck folks…..

Hi Y'all, Same sex marriage should not be a chip on the shoulder of the president considering whether to give it conventional morality or not; even if it is unafrican, it should not be the president's business. I am not trying to say am in support of it but, provisional counselling should be given to proponents of such serprine philosophy not brute compliance. The president, should have a re-think of this excess and act appropriately with laid down acts of the country. Praises given to him should not intoxicate him to a flaw. Your only, Kingsley.

What do you know about God. Seun, i think everyone should leave God out of this thread because some people don't believeon Him. So its needless trying to tell an atheist that being gay is not god like or biblical etc [When exactly did your power expand to god-like proportions to meet out sentences to the lesser of us?/quote]

I don't support the gay idea like i said b/4but
5 years jail 4 what? IF OBASANJO THINKS THE BIBLE IS AGAINST IT, Y DOES HE STILL HAVE MANY WIVES, Y IS HE STILL STEALING MONEY.
Besides most of the gay people are already in prison so i don't see how a nigerian prison would reform them.
and y is this the problem of the govt anyway?
Africans stupidly believe that banning gay relationships = eradication of gay tendencies. I wonder how africans think
Please deliver africans 4rom poverty first

Hey how about 5 years for Adultery, It must be pretty depressing for women to work hard with their husbands and when he succeeds he goes out and has children with every woman he sees. Or better still give a five year jail sentence to prostitutes and their patrons and you will send a good share of men and women to jail too and maybe in the process maybe combat prostitution.
Let me see you tree legged President (sturdy as a stool) stand on the moral high ground on any of the two above. There must people around him quivering in their boots with his five year sentence for gays, yet they will suffer in silence like the rest of you people that think that gays, lesbians, alcoholics, religious people, smokers etc. have no rights, aah don’t forget those that do abortions (very important)
Also for the record let me share with you where I stand. I am against same sex marriage, nothing to be gained from it except temporal pleasure. (Please lookup the word, for those moral folks out there). I am also for letting human beings exercise basic rights like freedom and liberty. Prosecuting someone from their sexual behavior will only lead to one course of action; they will flee from sight and maybe line up at the embassies like the millions already fleeing from poverty.

May I ask those who are in support of same sex marriage whether we can find it our culture or traditional believe? We are claiming that Christianity and Islam are foreign religions, but do they encourage that as well? Even if we want to copy western culture, I think is high time Nigeria begin to copy what is good from the western culture, believe and not what is against the moral ethics. I am in support of jail term.

I think that there is rarely anyone here advocating same sex marriage, the issue is the sentence offered for it? People (God’s own creation) were given the liberty to choose a course of action of their own and answer to him at the end. If the goal is to discourage same sex marriage all the government has to do is say that they will not grant a license. Then the individuals in question will be subject to the community in which they live.
Did you know that in some parts of Nigeria, people give their wives to their friend for sex as a sign of great love and friendship? I would not consider such an option but who am I to question their own, let alone send them to jail for it.
Did you know that in some part of Nigeria, people marry their cousins, would you marry your cousin?
In some parts of Nigeria people have more than one wife? In some places it is illegal like the US, yet you can come to the US with two or more wifes, how about the US jailing you upon arrival? How about adultery, how about smoking or drinking?
Civilized people say keep it in your house. So don’t drink and drive, don’t smoke in public places. No sex on the street. What does that mean, keep your private business private. Unless we develop such attitudes, radicals will turn society into a place where women cannot wear trousers, or do you not remember the schools banning mini skirts. They should have applied a 5 year jail sentence as well

@pendelite why bother, when our good men in uniform start harassing people anyhow and using this law as a pretext to collect egunje then people will understand the implications. Half of the people posting here are only talking about a certain aspect of the law, people seem to be unaware of the fact that certain parts of the law can also be used against heterosexuals.

@nferyn and all those the support or promote same sex getting marriade if your first child the male in particular tell you that he would love to marry his same sex (gay) would you go ahead and bless the marriage? If your answer is yes. I prayed that all members in Nairaland that go against the ban of same sex should pray that your wishes should come to pass. Amen

I will propably say that am impress at the various points made by us on this topic but the truth is 1. Same Sex Marriage is immoral 2. Africa is Africa and is bound by high level of personal Integrity for doing what is right from wrong 3. If we say we have no sin let he/she strike the first stone 4. Gay act is BAD BAD AND BAD 5. Tolerance is the key, awareness campaign is also a key 6. Appreciate your neighbor, teach him the way that is right 7. Love is the ultimate way 8. Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child 9. Keep your private life private 10. Bring no shame to your Society
5 years Ban for same Sex marriages I support, 5 years prison sentence for same sex relationship I disapprove.
This is Nigeria when Laws like this are made Heads will roll. I say Heads will roll. Mostly innocent ones and Heterosexual Ones will suffer from this laws through extorsion and intimidation.
Dear All Tolerate one another, learn to live in mutual Harmony for Better Tomorrow.
Have a great Day

The word Marriage in a gay relationship is definitely what am against. But to put a prison term for any violators is like inventing a new form of Sharia Law . Being gay is not a choice, but what they were sometimes born with, and who are we to judge people because a sexuality that is preferable to them. Am against Marriage for Gay couples because Marriage is an institution between one man, one woman, and God. But a Union of some sort should be established, and outrightly banning it is a mistake. If they are serious about banning stuff, why don't they ban first a person man or woman, getting married to more than one partner, and then we would see were we can go from them. Just because the Government passed this lousy Law will not stop, i mean will definitely not stop me fro having Gay Friends. Nigeria is a democratic country, and the government should please realize it when they are stepping out of line.

The proposed law is illogical and fascistic to say the least. And just when I thought Bayo Ojo is an enlightened individual (he proposed freeing half nigerian prisoners) then he comes up as a bible quoting demagogue minister of justice in a supposed secular nation. Obasanjo's law is not just taking gays' right away (to be gay) he is also taking their right to protest against the taking of such right. What business does govt have with telling people their sexual orientation? Its fine and good if govt decide not to recognise same sex marriage but its a fascist society that criminalise being gay, calling it unafrican then went on about the "holy books". How african are those same "holy books"? Were they written in some African hut I don't know of?
The point is being gay is a personal issue not one govt can decree on without infringing on our individual human right. Because majority of us will not be affected by that law, or because of our personal distaste for gays does not mean we should accept such laws. We are in a democracy and for good or worse tolerance of the other is its hallmark. We should hold it as self evident.
