If you once had hope that the state of African universities was ok, or that it was improving or better still, if you have been priding yourself that you are in a great university because your father said UI was good or ABU was great or such other statements like great Ife and so on, then u need to read this research finding and make up your mind.
Truth is currently, African Universities lack the wherewithal and facilities to lift the poorest continent (Africa) out of its present comatose position. And it is a known fact that higher education, the type provided by universities is the surest way to lift a country out of poverty. The poverty alleviation (or is it eradication) programs are supposed to be designed in universities as evidences of research would suggest. Here, the case is different. Furthermore, the world universities ranking of 2006 (
http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2006/ARWU2006_Top100.htm) shows that no university in Africa is ranked among the first 1000!
