There is a strange hush about this group in this forum. Ok, I understand they are not MASSOB and as such will not incur the fury of the predictable crowd. However this group says it wants more control over the Niger Delta region's enormous oil wealth. I know little or nothing about this group. Google hasn’t enhanced my knowledge either. Any facts about this group will be appreciated.

Owo - thanks for the advice. Mariory - thanks for the links. I have found a bit more about this organisation, and they hold more of menace than any of the ones we unreservedly seem to revile or accuse of secession.

i see them as perpertrators of violence on innocent souls , fighting a good fight the wrong way. if they think they can gain resource control by using violence , they should ask the likes of osama how much he has gained by killing thousands of ppl in the S.11 attacks

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has given oil companies and their employees until midnight on Friday night to leave the region. It is the first time the military leader of the Mend movement, Major-General Godswill Tamuno, has spoken publicly of his group's aims.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/4723076.stm

Regardless of the opinion held by we armchair theoreticians, Uncle Sam is already in the Niger Delta and is actively shifting stance from observer to full-fledged participant in the shooting war there. Welcome to the global village.

I am firmly convinced that the armed men agitating in the Niger Delta are doing it for purely selfish reasons. This is not about Niger Delta ethnic pride at all. It's not at all about the common man. Does the common Niger Deltan who is not engaged in oil bunkering have access to sophisticated weapons? Can the man who is poor enough to be angry with the government go ahead to buy a rocket launcher for killing soldiers?

We all know that part of the reason the Niger Delta is so backwards in infrastructural development is because the central government - the FG, wants it so. Why? So that the people in the area will not see the light of the day and know what is happening around them.
One of my friends who's currently working in the oil comapny told me recently, how peaceful the creeks used to be in the early 80's and late 70's. He said the Ijaw women used to marvel at the way these ''offshore'' people go into the creeks. When they get back from doing some work on the wells in the creeks, it's these Ijaw women and men, poor fishermen, that will take them in and give them peppersoup to eat and warm their bodies.
These Ijaw people attended to these people as their own kith and kins - with a pure heart and a simple mind, untill the day the truth about the activities of these folks were made known.

What is fair? Large corporate multi-national oil co.s sucking the life out of the earth in under-developed countries, choking off the environment, killing indigenous wildlife, turning brother against brother for revenues never to be realized by the people most affected by the drilling. Power and greed corrupts. I'm reminded of the Nigerian hero Ken Saro-Wiwa and the ultimate sacrifice he made in the war against big oil. I pray that MEND will finally drive them out! MEMO To Royal Dutch/Shell: Clean up the mess you made in Nigeria, pack your suitcase, and GO HOME! , my .02 cents fcr

These are inflammatory comments. You will not gain anything by destroying an industry that 150 million people depend upon. Investment is what makes a town to develop (e.g. look at Lagos) and one factor that affects investment is the security of the area. Look, if Niger Delta is so peaceful that all the expatriates want to settle there do you think it will not develop? Saying, "I want to profit at the expense of someone else" doesn't lead to progress in politics. The Niger Deltans cannot say "we want to develop our community by throwing 100 million or more other people into abject suffering" and expect that to open. You have to have a vision that is profitable to all parties concerned, and you have to have leaders that can articulate that vision and get popular support for it among even those that are not Niger Deltans. We have Nigerian leaders going to the US to ask people to come and invest in Nigeria, so why don't we have Niger Deltas in Lagos asking their Igbo brothers to come and invest in their creeks?

Seun Thanx for telling them o! I wonder if the guy really understands the concept of Investment. He's far away in Washington and blaming Shell for investing in 9ja delta. Perhaps he should come home and invest here too.
Anyways, I still stand by the fact that these hoodlums called MEND are simply courting trouble. If baba Iyabo decends on them, Odi will be a mere child's play compare to what they would see.
Violence and sensless kidnapping will not resolve the problem. If MEND really wants to develop the Nigeria delta, they should stop the oil bunkering and ask their leaders and governors what they have done with the 13% derivation.
Thank God for EFCC, some governors are now trying to pave new roads where we don't need them.

A quick reminder, the happenings in the recent past (due to violence amongst the host communities in Warri saw most foreign and local companies relocating away from the town, thus causing mass migration of people and commercial activities. Warri leaders are now pracctically begging compnaies and pple to return. But guess what, no one is will to return back there.
This should make the MEND hoodlums to realize that their aims cannot be achieved through violent attacks and kidnappings. I just pray the they don't end up being Movement for the Extinction of the Niger Delta.
Port Harcourt is almost 5 times more expensive to reside in compared to Warri, yet oil companies and oil workers prefer PH to warri. The simple reason is that PH is by far relatively more peaceful.
So my Niger Delta brothers, make una take to those MEND boys o! Baba Iyabo can be deadly!!

silly comments from three folks in here. A yoruba bloke, an Igboman and a possible Aboki. Please, you guys go back to your cocoa, coal and groundnut boards respectively. Those of us from the Chicoco republic (niger Delta) are better off without you guys. In as much I dont support the kidnap of foreigners,I will strongly recommend the kidnap, trial and summary execution of all yorubas and hausa/fulanis found in the Niger Delta. You guys are the real culprits.

Mingiix, I really think you shouldn't have been taken off that medication. You are ranting again, buddy, and your blood pressure is getting dangerously high. Look in the mirror at those bulging, bloodshot eyes. Can't you see you are hurting yourself and upsetting other patients ?
Not to worry, that polite nurse is on the way to your ward with a nice warm strait jacket, some sedatives and a team of muscle-men in white coats to help you get dressed, so quickly put back your dentures or you might offend them. This is all for your own good Mingiix, and rest assured you really will be grateful some day.

And to think miingix, gosh! Miingix, are those guys in your profile your friends? they look deadly. Jakumo, you'd better run for your dear life. All these your medications and prescriptions for Miingix will not work at all. A quick reminder, the happenings in the recent past (due to violence amongst the host communities in Warri saw most foreign and local companies relocating away from the town, thus causing mass migration of people and commercial activities. 9ijaman, I'm cock sure you're not from the Niger Delta. So, I will take your comments about Warri and PH with a pinch of salt. No one's setting Warri against PortHarcourt here. You should have compared PortHarcourt to Abuja and Lagos or Kano.I'm glad you remembered that all that happened to Warri was in the recent past. FYI, never again will Warri people allow foreigners and thieves from other dry and arid regions of Nigeria to sow seeds of discord amongst them I'm tired of repeating myself on this Niger Delta issues again and again.

MingiixI guess I now understand the what sort of Medication the MEND guys are taking, OnoYou better stop deceiving youself. The fact that I may not be from the 9ja delta doe not mean that I'm not aware of what is happening there. Take a look at your warri, are u not worried that it's fast becoming a ghost town, ? Warri is about the only major town in Nigeria where you have heavily armed Police and Soldiers guarding the entrance to and exit from the town. My friend u beta wise up o!

9ijaman, When was the last time you visit Warri? Must have been eons for all I care. I've been in Warri for sometime. The governor of Delta State is doing so much to restore Warri to its glorious past. And goodness! he's doing a fantastic job. Surely, you've been away for too long. You need to see what's on ground.
You see, I have relations in PH, and they have been complaining big time about the horrible things going on in there. OBJ and his boy (Odili) have turned PH to a city without electricity. No good road, no security. I vist PH every weekend and I'm completely pissed at what OBJ and his boy has turned that place to.
And FYI, some oil companies have established laison offices in Warri. The deeds of the past has indeed dealth a big blow on the town, but the place is waxing strong again.
Now, all these does not have anything to do with the total picture The real problem at hand is dealing with ingrates from other dry and arid regions of the country who are sojourners and thieves in our lands. By the time MEND finishes with you people, you'll regret ever coming to the Niger Delta to pilfer and reap from where you did not sow.

Ono, Hmmm, I can understand the fact that you Guv is try his best. But my dear, PH is lighyears ahead of Warri. At least I can sleep with both eyes closed in PH. If I try am for warri, u can make your own conclusions. I know Warri perhaps much more than u can ever imagine.
Travelling from PH all the way to Benin, u will always have the greatest headache as soon as you cross the border from Bayelsa to Delta state, Headache starts to subside once you cros the delta Edo border, Have you ever asked urself why, ? Nna don't blame it on the police alone o! your MEND hoodloms constitute the greatest havoc and nuisance on the roads,

Inflammatory indeed! The 100 million that are so 'brilliant' that they cannot create their own sources of revenue but have to rely on killing others (Niger deltans) for their own daily food are not worth protecting or dying for. Nigeria has sown wild oats of trouble, it will reap them one after the other. Let it be clear to all concerned that those that sow military occpation will reap the whirl wind in their backyard
