That's stupid. Ken Saro Wiwa was killed under a murderous military regime led by the late General Sani Abacha who incidentally would also have killed our current president if not for the intervention of the west. You cannot punish Obasanjo for the sins of Abacha. That would simply be stupid.

Who's punishing anybody for Saro Wiwa's death here. Who am I to punish the great baba OBJ who's following in the footstep of Abacha. Stop blowing hot air and face reality. OBJ's angling for third term now and he's not kidding about it. What makes him different from Abacha now? He's even more concerned about his third term ambition than the well being of the Niger Delta people. As far as I'm concerned, OBJ, Abacha, IBB, etc are the same set of heartless people who are milking us DRY. And we've got to deal with ALL of them as our common foes.

How is OBJ different? Well, you can abuse president Obasanjo as you are doing without being gunned to death. You can make phone calls. Investment is flowing into peaceful regions in the country. Corruption in high places is being punished. I do not support the third term bid, but I am smart enough to recognize that food that is not tasty is still better than poison. Look, there is no evil person that doesn't have reasons for actions. That doesn't make them right.

That sounds funny to me o! I want to agree with Ono that there really isn't any difference between OBJ and Abacha. Common man was not suffering this much during Abacha's regime. At least I don't have to spend up to 5000 naira to fill the tank of my jalopy car. Obj has been and is still gunning down every single soul who makes any attempt to stand against his third term bill. You talk of corruption in high places being punished: Tell me where is that high place and who's been punished? Mark my word for it, Alami will be allowed go scot free, just as Tafa only spend a few months in jail for defrauding the NPF. Most (if not all) of those who have been tainted as corrupt and punished harsly have been victims of Obj's anger. Tell me why Alami should be behind bars and Odili is walking freely in Rivers. You know why, Alami na Atiku boy but Odili na staunch Obj supporter. I wonder whatthe likes of Tony Anenih (Mr Fix it) are still doing in this government. The only side of Obj's anticorruption campaign I like is that whoever gets to his post from an opposing camp will equally unleash Ribadu on him and his cronies. Ma brother, Baba Iyabo's anticorruption campaign is all about victimization, blackmail and attempts at cowing anyone who'll want to run against him in the 2007 elections. It's all a big facade of lies and total ruse.

I wonder why Ladoja will be removed from Office and we have a former pilferer in the police force can be allowed to rule Oyo state. Yet we talk of Obj fighting corruptions in high places.
This government over the years has show lack of respect for the rule of law.
Corruption is being fought in high places yet we have Senators and Reps going home with Ghana must go bags courtesy the presidency in other for them to support Obj's selfish 3rd term bid. Some of our so called Senators went about the country canvassing for third term even when we had religio-ethinc crises in some parts of the country. Millions of naira (from oil money) must have been wasted again on the useless campaigns advocating for a 3rd term for some office holders.
Atiku's Intels was crippled by Obj, 'because he does not want him to stand against him for third term. Nna the list is endless. Abegiiii make una no talk like say Obj na saint o!
I believe baba Iyabo can do better if he stops his quest for a 3rd term and concentrates on how to resolve religious, ethnic and ND crises.

all governments are the same be it IBB, ABACHA or OBJ. why do i say so? because they commit the same mistakes of abandoning their fundamental responsibilities of providing basic infrastructure to their citizens. Orji Uzor Kalu in a statement released today said that Nigeria makes $170 million every day from sale of crude oil; with that amount he said there should be no untarred road in every part of Nigeria.

Odili has not been arrested in a foreign country. Odili did not jump bail from a foreign country Odili has not been impeached by the Rivers Assembly Odili is still govenor of rivers and so enjoys immunity, just like Dariye of Plateu (even though he too jumped bail). I think it is unfair to only mention the price of petrol. We know the price of petrol has risen because government no longer subdises it (or at lest they now subsidise to a lesser extent). But what about other things you can now do that you couldn't do in Abacha's time or the things avaliable now.

O yeah I know some, like Garri was about 3cups for 5naira when Abacha was is govermnment and it's now above 5naira per cup,
Like we had a few good roads courtesy PTDF during Abacha's period and now we have potholes all over, sometime na gullies sef. Even though Mr. Fix it squandered 300 Billion naira on road projects, maybe in his village in Edo state.
Like Abacha had Major Mustapha to deal with his perceived enermies while OBJ has Ribadu doing same now, even though it may seem a bit more humane.
Like we have ethnic and religious crises every now and then but these were quite scanty during Abacha.
I know u'll mention GSM, but come to think of it, how many 9ijans with cell phone can afford to spend 1000 naira monthly to buy recharge cards.
Nepa is by far worse now than it was 8 to 10 years ago.
The only commodity that has direct effect on every 9ijan is fuel. Whenever there is any increase on fuel price every 9ijan will feel the negative effect instantly.
Obj has been in Aso rock for 7 years and we've had fuel price increase in as many times.
Abeg please let us know what's been happening now that has greatly improved the lot of common man on the street as compared to 8 to 10 years ago.

@seun My name is Seun too, but i have to agree with the others. OBJ is a monster. Why was there so much resistance to him in the West in 1997? He couldnt even win at the polling booth in front of his family house in Owu. A man that is know for torturing and killing pilfering farm workers. All the apparent gains that we may see during this regime are the natural consequenses of a "Democratic Dispensation" and the reciprocal effect it has on the way we are treated by the so-called Western Powers. Also OBJ has had the devils luck of making some good appointments eg Okunjo-whats -her-name, Aunty Dora, Ribadu (regardless of what u all say), Nweke Jnr etc. But let us not be decieved, OBJs rule has witnessed an unpresidented number of unsolved political murders; Bola Ige, Harry,Dikibo, Mrs Rimi, should I go on?. What of the outrightly treasonable offences that happenned in Anambra an Oyo states?Nobody has been held accountable

Much as some of you try to paint a picture of doom, it doens't fool most Nigerians. And it was just one of the many things discussed. And the US government did not even reject the request. They just placed conditions on the sale and the Federal authorities felt the situation wasn't being treated as urgently as they would like. As the british Foereign secretary said the conference was a success as lots of things were covered. You guys blame Obansanjo for everything while most Governors are busy redirecting money into their pockets.

The American administration is firing back, declining Nigeria's request to send American marines to confront the militants. The row which has been simmering for some time has blown open with Vice-President Atiku Abubakar granting a rare interview with the Financial Times, lambasted the Bush administration for "being too slow" to provide elite security personnel to protect oil facilities under insurgent attacks. "The US security plan for the region did not appear to be moving fast as the situation is unfolding", Alhaji Atiku stated. Again I Quote: http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2006/mar/01/national%20-1-03-2006-011.htmState Department and Pentagon officials attribute the reluctance of Washington to get directly involved in the delta conflict to several factors, including worldwide military commitments and high level of corruption within the Nigerian military where some American supplied arms have been allegedly used by bandits to terrorize the population. The officials said there are also concerns from high level government officials that the militants are heavily armed with arms supplied to Nigerian forces which found their way into the delta. If you can read properly Mariory, ou will learn that the shopping list "Included Boats" Not boats alone. Are you telling me they Intended to shop relife materials for the Villager along side the boats? Please lets not hide anything here we all know where this is going and they have refused to mention the full list cause they are trying to protect Nigerian Gov. already battered Image or what ever their reason were, Why the mention of previous arm incidents if there were no guns involved, I think the problem In this country is people who see glaringly and refuse to admit obvious challenges we are having, I repeat Our Government does not have our interest at heart

In as much as I don't support what MEND is doing, but I wonder the best way to get a DEAF man to hear one's plea! A friend went for his youth service in Bayelsa and when he came back, he could only exclaim: "Man mi, this people dey SUFFER!"May be Seun, the Olori oko of Nairaland should organise an excursion for us all to go and spend a week there, so that we can know for real if all these hues and cries are worth it What do you all think? I agree that they are suffering, but violence is not the answer. Read this: A Nigerian court asked oil giant Royal Dutch Shell to pay 1.5 billion US. dollars to communities as compensation for oil pollution on Friday, but Shell argued immediately against the judgment.http://english.people.com.cn/200602/25/eng20060225_245748.htmlIf spent properly, that $1.5 billion in compensatory damages can go a long way in developing the Niger Delta. But the reality on ground is that 90% of the money will be "chopped" by your community leaders. This court ruling for $1.5 billion was achieved without kidnapping or killing everybody. Civilised societies fight their battles in court, and this ruling shows that the courts are willing to help. Let us look for peaceful means of achieving our goals. So we can live long.

$1.5bn cannot go a long way in developing the ND. It is peanuts compared to 22bn$ per annum earned from the region.
In any case, the case did not start in the courts, it started in the senate. This should help you to know that the battle is on all fronts.
But be sure that those that live the longest are not necessarily those that were the best in avoiding trouble. Only cowards avoid trouble when their life is being troubled daily.

Now we are talking sense prosper. I've pointed this out in another thread on this same subject that the villains here are our collective leaders, those incompetent selfish goons ruling us but some people like owo simply refuse to see beyond their ethnic frame. They believe its tribal issue. One tribe exploiting another. Which is clearly wrong. There is nothing to gain ethnicising the Niger Delta problem or any of our myriad of problems for that matter, because they are our collective burden and we should all support the cause but not through violent or blaming some other ethnic group when its our leaders to blame.

owo (m)

The 'incompetent selfish goons (according to demmy) ruling Nigeria, though culpable are not to blame. They are the products of this society and are kept in power by the same people.
I have insisted time and again that Nigeria's only problem is ethnicity (and not corruption). It is this problem that is at the root of every malaise that can be identified. Unless it is denounced, dealt with and its ashes 'cremated', nothing else can make this place to work. Ethnicity it is that 1. determines where a university, road, hospital, factory etc is built or supported by the federal government. it is what makes port harcourt airport look like a secondary school hostel compared to minna despite being the busiest and most economically viable outside lagos. 2. Determines who is given scholarship 3. Determines whether someone is given a job or not 4. Determines whether a landlord agrees to give you his house in lagos or not and all sort of sundry things
However it is seen, Nigeria's failure and imminent collapse is a direct result of ethnic bigotry.
For the purpose of information, it is too late to share money or start building infrastructure in the Niger Delta. That should have been done ten years ago.
If advocating for the Niger Delta puts ethnic coat on me, I hereby humbly accept it. It would not be the first or second time because, in the years between 1992-1995, advocating strongly for the west and even campaigning for it, had put an ethnic coat over me , which I gladly accepted.
The issues that this thread has raised are still outstanding, and they include 1. What situations on ground have raised a group called MEND (or any other name) 2. Are they just opportunists ,bent on profiteering or working for 'selfish' reasons? 3. Are the identified problems (and the leaders peretrating them) encouraged by the larger Nigerian population? 4. What is Nigeria's future in view of these groups springing up.
These and other issues related to the ND are more important and should be answered objectively.
