The 'incompetent selfish goons (according to demmy) ruling Nigeria, though culpable are not to blame. They are the products of this society and are kept in power by the same people.
I have insisted time and again that Nigeria's only problem is ethnicity (and not corruption). It is this problem that is at the root of every malaise that can be identified. Unless it is denounced, dealt with and its ashes 'cremated', nothing else can make this place to work.
Ethnicity it is that
1. determines where a university, road, hospital, factory etc is built or supported by the federal government. it is what makes port harcourt airport look like a secondary school hostel compared to minna despite being the busiest and most economically viable outside lagos.
2. Determines who is given scholarship
3. Determines whether someone is given a job or not
4. Determines whether a landlord agrees to give you his house in lagos or not
and all sort of sundry things

Its still as Saro Wiwa described it 20 years ago, like "the puke of a tuberculosis patient." It is arguably the dirtiest place on earth. You should know you are living there. And go to Sokoto to witness the 17th century right in front of your eyes. And talking of university, the highest ranking Nigerian university in Africa barely came in the top 70. Even in Africa! So stop looking up to mediocrity. The whole country is an eyesore north and south. |

Demmy is very correct. The whole country is dirty. There was recently a programme on CNN - 'Inside Africa'. A caption was on the recent religious riot in Onitsha. My wife was so alarmed! thinking that the whole city was destroyed. She did not realise much of what we were watching was the 'dirt' that forms part of the daily life there.

The last time I checked, Governors like Alamasiegha are from the Niger delta. If the oil companies are guilty of underdeveloping the Niger delta as the militants claim, how much of the underdevelopment have past governors and new governors like Alams contributed? How about kidnapping him and his entire family? Let's be fair and reasonable. The Niger delta needs attention but going about solving the problem in this manner is not the way to go. War is not an option.

@demmy, you may need to go through most of my posts on this forum like I did to yours so that you can have a holistic view and understand my drift anytime you see you see my post.
That Nigeria is an expression of mediocrity is doubted only by the dead.
That the structure, operation and workings of the Nigerian system is anti-people, dysfunctional and destined for collapse is glaring.
That the ND as part of Nigeria, currently, is the hardest hit by this unfortunate situation is acknowledged by all.
Its nauseating to note the deep level of ignorance, 'even among the enlightened', on the basic causes of this state of affairs in Nigeria. On the other hand it is also clear that for those who have not experienced life at the street/slum level in an average Nigeria town, there is certainly a disconnect with realities on ground. This disconnect creates an improper balance between theory and reality.
Take the case of Onitsha, whose market caters for the a great deal of West Africa's consumer goods (over and over again I have personally seen traders form Niger, Burkinafaso, Cameroon and Chad in that market buying bulks and containers of goods). I mean containers of goods are most times imported through Lagos port, transported to Onitsha and then the goods are brought back to Lagos by the traders. It is such an important hub.
Nigeria's film industry that is becoming a toast for many is almost 100% commercially anchored in Iweka road, Onitsha.
In other climes, it would have been made into a great trading hub replete with appropriate infrastructure. But Alas it will not happen here. It took about 15 years of begging the federal government before the road from the headbridge through to Awka was fixed.
Now it has taken seven years of an Obasanjo Administration for a genuine contract to be awarded (3 weeks ago) for the other major road going to Owerri.
Compare these roads with other more costly but 'less important' (economically) roads like the Abuja kaduna, Ife- Illesha roads for instance, then you weep for the shortsightedness of our system.
When the last minister of works for questioned in a forum sometime ago, he responded by giving out statistics, at a press conference, of the number of Ibo engineers working in the ministry. And stating that despite their number in the ministry, they have not been able to do anything about the road(s).
If ethnicity is not a factor in the distribution of a thing as basic as infrastructure in Nigeria, then I wonder what was the aim of the minister then.
My dear, space will fail us if we were to catalogue the cases. Is it the Imo airport that was built by community contribution? or the case of the Warri - Port Harcourt Road that is a deathtrap? or the case of Federal universities of technology?
Nigeria's Achilles heel is its ethnicity problem. If it is not solved, failure and disintegration will continue to stare it in the face.
It is from this mediocritic system that the Niger Delta wants to opt out. It is tired of being the cow always milked to fund this mediocritic system. That MEND (or whatever name) has surfaced today in the political / social equation and is using unheard-of tactics attests to the ever growing resistance to this system.

Mr, Self Acclaimed Issac Boro. I'm not in here to exchange words However I'm sorry to burst your bubble I am a full blood Niger Deltan Born and raised in Delta State as well. If you also mind my origins are evenly spread across delta. My mom is from the delta Ibo, My Dad Is an Isoko man, My grand parents also have their roots across the Isoko land. I was born I Kwale and raised among the Urobos in warri. I was a witness to several communal crisis in the Okumagba area as a kid, have been denied scholarship that was rightfully awarded me as an undergraduate due to my origin. and have suffered seeing my uncle, friends loose their homes to crisis.
I have had sleepless nights in my fathers house for the sake of sounds of machine guns and have faced near death situations as a kid in school due to riots and student violence.
I watched the pain in my dads eyes when he was talking to me about the foundation stone in our state university that has been left that way for year with promisses un kept,

You also implied that a road like Ife-Ilesh is not important because they are "yoruba roads" even though the bulk of the food produce from the western hinterland passes along these roads. Ono I feel you ohh, but do you really think it will take us going o war to solve things like these, I'm aware of the outsider handiwork but We lost because we were violent. And not reasonable. Now Mr boro is suggesting desame misttake, Thats why i got angry. We need some dosages of the Boros of this world. Without them in the Japanese army, there would have been no Pearl-Harbour and maybe WW2 would still be with us. Negotiation has not always been the shortest route to peace.
But what is peace and what is violence?
Sentencing a generation of children, women and men to slow but painful death due to pollution is certainly worse than instant violence.
Denying your people of a future because your resources must be used to feed, clothe, educate, house, transport and maintain all your neighbours is worse than murder. Even at that the neighbours are claiming that the resources are not yours in addition to the daily insults.
Insisting on 'negotiating', with the very people that deprive your people of basic health and social infrastructures all in the name of peace while they die daily due to oppresion should be described with a better word -cowardice- instead of peace.
For your information, everyday, the Nigeria's society by virtue of its policies (land use act, educational deprivation, centralization of all ND resources, corruption and lately a total militarization of the whole region including bombings and rapes) is committing grave acts of violence against a defenseless people - the Niger Deltans.
Please think again before you label a self -defense action as violence. Those that are violent are using our money to buy gunships and come after us in our backyard.
Every society (including ours in the ND) goes through its own in-fighting. That is what happened in the last Warri Crises.
This time, all parties are gathered together against a common foe that has been identified as the sole perpetrator / instigator of all the violence /injustice/hate/inhuman-treatment that we have been having before. It is therefore very different and you can bet it that having identified the common foe, in-fighting has become a thing of the past.
So, please, allow Boro to vent out his anger and frustration, the greater the diversity of opinions amongst us, the wider will be the scope of focus/ methods used in accomplishing the goal and ensure that the homeland is on the path of growth and development which is the bane 'Nigeria'

And to lend credence to what Owo has said, you must have noticed that Warri has remained calm even in the face of all the wahala that has befallen the Creeks in the Warri axis in the last few months - MEND and all.
In the past, perpetrators of evil would have taken advantage of the crises in the creeks (MEND) to cause ethnic groups in Warri (Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobos) to start another round of war! You'd hear such things as the Ijaws are attacking the Itsekiris somewhere and so, lets start burning Ijaw people's building, or it's the Urhobos who are formenting troubles, so we should go and exterminate them. But all that has died down now. Did you see any infighting amongst them again? NO. That's because they now know their common foe. They've been able to unmask their common enemy. The enemy of their progress who feed fat daily on the resources from their area.
We have dialogued with those tormenting us for the past 50 years. They did not budge one bit. And that's because the resources from our areas in the ND are still being used to fuel their own economic growth, their educational well being, stocking up their armoury, selfish interests in other lands etc etc. If we can just stop the flow of these resources of ours for a few months, and suffer the consequences together, we will definitely reach a compromise on this matter.
Until then, let MEND people chase out all the thieves in the creeks.
