Nigeria raked up a 1-0 win over Kenya in an international friendly at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Akabueze Chukwuema gave the Super Eagles an undeserved lead and winning goal when he drilled home from the edge of the box after the Kenyan defence failed to deal with a spilled ball.

It was Harambee Stars who took the early initiative when Victor Mugabe got past Watford defender Danni Shittu on the left before delivering a cross that Oscar Kadenge headed wide after four minutes.

Nigeria then forced the first corner but Onyekachi Okonkwo’s cross was headed to safety.

Andrew Oyombe forced a fine save from Nigeria goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba after ten minutes when the Enyimba goalkeeper parried the looped header for a fruitless corner. Kenya got another quick corner but this time it was sniffed out. Nigeria then forced another corner but Kenya’s goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng dealt with it.

And the Kenyans were relieved as Isiaka Olawole’s sizzler went wide.

Both teams were using the match to prepare for their Nations Cup qualifying matches. Nigeria play away to Uganda while Kenya travel to Swaziland.

Mugabe was on the ascendancy as he controlled a neat Mohammed Jamal high ball but Ifeanyi Onwuatu cut out his first time shot. Harambee Stars could have easily taken the lead but Jamal’s choice to go for the near post when played in by a Mugabe clever pass denied Stars a chance as Dele went down to make a decent save.

Nigeria went straight for the attack but Rotterdam midfielder Sani Kaita wasted a clever back-heel from Chukweuma as he sliced wide his attempted cross. The goal arrived seven minutes from half time as Chukweuma buried the winner after Oyombe’s tackle on Yakubu Aiyegbeni played him through.

Jacob Mulee introduced Patrick Oboya for Mike Mururi on restart and the Siad Most lad almost made an instant impact turning around Asec Abidjan defender Mutiu Adegoke but Shittu cut out his final ball.

The imposing Shittu surged forward in the 49th minute and Okonkwo headed over his return header.

Aiyegbeni, who until the second half was quiet, finally made his contribution but Ochieng effortlessly gathered his shot. The Middlesbrough forward then raced clear on 53 minutes but was adjudged offside as he shaped up to shoot. Victor Ali came in for Kadenge on 62 minutes but Stars fortune s did not change. Berti Vogts then made a double substitution bringing on Nwankwo Kanu and Paul Obiefule for Aiyegbeni and Nwaneri Obina after 65 minutes.

I just hope that they will win because it will be a big disgrace if they draw or lose after all the yapping (by the eagles) after their slim win at Abeokuta.

i like the idea of bringing in new players to make the team a lot more competitative
glad Shittu is back  Wink , loved his game in the unity cup.

someone needs to show the 'known pros' that others can also take their place at any time!

i hope we play well sha

You can't walk in and out of the national team like that.

Ha na so we see am oh.Its good though.Dts what u get when u depend so much on some players.See Mikel wey jst start to play ball yesterday dey form.It wldnt be bad if Uganda beat us well.Den we would no we are no more "SUPER" like Vogts said.I have always believed in having home based players involved because dey r reliable. We better learn our lessons fast like South Africa is before we become history.

We need a camp of home based Eagles asap.this our foreign stars don tire me well well. They nt only need disciplinary action dey need to be banned from playing in the nation cup.Den dey would honour team call ups.

In a way i dnt really blame the players because when they get injured the nfa does not remember them, which av cost sum of this players there shirts in there clubs. It is this same attitude of the nfa that makes players shy away
