Rangers, Kwara open Globacom league
Published: Friday, 20 Jul 2007
Rangers will host Kwara United in the opening match of the new Globacom Premier League season on August 18 in Enugu.
Akwa United will engage Enyimba in Aba.The encounter will be closely monitored by the Nigeria Football League following the violence that marred their two encounters last season.

In the first game in Aba, an Akwa United fan was stabbed to death, and a retaliatory attack in the return leg in Uyo left three fans dead and led to widespread violence.

At the draw, conducted on Wednesday in Abuja, the Nigeria Football League Chairman, Oyuki Obaseki, assured Nigerians of a new, improved and hitch-free season, adding that the NFL had increased the indem- nities of match officials to ensure improved officiating

“Adequate arrangements and other incentives have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free season which hopefully will commence on August 18,” he said.

“We have decided to take this burden off clubs because we want the clubs to develop and grow.”

He confirmed that the board had suspended the abridged league format in deciding the winner of the League.

“This time around we are running a full league, that means the 2007/2008 league will run for 38 weeks.”

The National Division One league was also collapsed from four groups to two, based on geographical spread with 16 teams in both groups and the season is expected to run for 30 weeks.

Nigeria: NFA, NFL On Collision Course

http://allafrica.com/stories/200707231532.html

Indications have emerged that the cold war raging between the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and Nigeria Football League (NFL) may not abate soon. Investigations by THISDAYsports reveal that rather than seek practical ways of resolving the crisis rocking both bodies, officials of both football bodies have continued to fan the embers of discord and acrimony which has left the groups sharply divided to the detriment of the development of the game in the country.

THISDAY Sports learnt during the week that matters got to a head when officials of the FA who returned from Canada after a failed attempt at the World Youth Championship, (WYC), turned down overtures from the leadership of NFL to attend the draw for the 2007/2008 Globacom Premier League season. Though, it was gathered that senior officials of the FA including the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Sani Lulu and Amanze Uchegbulam were available but refused to turn up at the Shehu Musa Yardua Centre where the event took place last Thursday. Sources close to the football house in Abuja who craved anonymity for obvious reasons, predicted that the cold war may continue unabated except urgent steps are taken to address it. He told our correspondent that the leadership of the FA was bitter with NFL officials whom he said prosecute activities of the league body unilaterally.

THISDAY Sports learnt that the FA insisted on not attending the draw because NFL which is part of the FA, ought to have waited till it conducts its Congress which will be used to round off the last season and at the same time herald a new football season.

However, the leadership of NFL is not taking the embarrassment lightly as it has vowed not to be part of the FA's proposed trip to London where it is scheduled to meet with the English Premiership officials and other Corporate bodies on a sponsorship drive. A source at the Asokoro Headquarters of the League body, revealed that since the FA will be meeting with English Premiership team, it remains to be seen how feasible the trip will be without officials of NFL.

However, our correspondent learnt that the main bone of contention is the 2006/2007 Globacom PremierLeague windfall which officials of the FA claim was not managed properly. But, when contacted, NFL's Head of Media, Isaac Ibafidon dismissed the allegation urging any Nigerian who have any doubts about activities of the football league body to carry out independent investigations especially with the clubs to determine the truth.

However, our correspondent also gathered that one of the leading communication companies in the country has concluded arrangements to kick start a parallel league next season. The company we learnt will dole out N10m, N5m and N3m to Premier, Professional and Amateur league clubs in the country. We further learnt that the leadership of the FA had already given its blessing to the arrangement.

The new Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barrister Chris. Green has told KICK OFF that nothing untoward will happen when Sharks and Dolphins come against each other in the second semifinal of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Sharks and Dolphins are sponsored by the Rivers State government and issues have been raised in the media on the possibility of the match being decided in the board room and not on the pitch but Green insist there will be no such thing.

"This is a football competition and not a friendly game and every team must put in everything to make sure they win and both sides will want to come out and win," Green told KICK OFF.

"It will all be to the credit of football and to the credit of the Rivers State governor that Rivers State is the haven of football in the country when the record books show that one state has two clubs in the FA Cup semifinals.

"We expect an atmosphere where the players of both side exhibit their skill and give fans the best of football that no one will regret going to Owerri to watch the match."

In 2005 Sharks and Dolphins met in the FA Cup final with the final result leading observers to believe there was an accord in place.

In the two legged affair, Dolphins, then playing in the CAF Confederation Cup lost home and away to Sharks; 1-0 at their Liberation Stadium home ground and 2-0 at the Sharks Stadium.

No side admitted there was a sell out in place but rumours abound then that there was an executive order from the Rivers State government to Dolphins to lose to Sharks in that quarterfinal match.

Sharks went on to lose their semi final tie against Enyimba and then the third place match against Iwuanyanwu Nationale.

I WONDER WHICH STADIUM THEM GO USE AFTER THEM BAN E'THING.

JUST THE WAY WORLD BANK SUPERVISES THE"LOANS" GIVEN 2 SOME AFRICAN AGENCIES, THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A KINDA COMMISSION TO SUPERVISE HOW THE NFL-ALLOCATED MONEY 2 CLUBS IS SPENT ON STADIA MAINTENANCES
