Two Nigeria ex-governors arrested

Orji Kalu denies money laundering allegations
Nigeria's anti-graft agency has arrested two former governors accused of corruption and money laundering.
Mr Turaki is a sitting senator, but Mr Kalu, a former governor of Abia State lost a bid for Nigeria's presidency in last April's elections.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had invited almost all of Nigeria's 36 former governors for questioning over graft allegations.

Mr Kalu and Mr Turaki were the only two that refused to turn up, the EFCC says.

Sule Lamido, who succeeded Mr Turaki as governor in Jigawa State, had recently alleged that the former governor left him an empty treasury when he stepped down last May.

Mr Turaki denies the allegations and says his successor is merely "playing politics".

The EFCC has also accused Orji Kalu of money laundering and diverting public money into family businesses, accusations the former governor flatly denies.

Let's see what the new excuse will be. Maybe Orji and Turaki disagreed with OBJ's returning to school?

Who knows? it could be the marginalization of the Igbos,  (forget the fact that Turaki is not Igbo).

We the union of Nigerian conspiracy theorists are at work. Please give us some time. We're trying to weave this around the Niger-Delta kidnappings. At least, already, we can prove that Turaki has some Ijaw blood.

Please you guys should not rush us. Give us some time to work on it.

lol
let's bear in mind though that they were arrested because they refused to honour the invitation by EFCC for questioning. Not necessarily for fraud in office. I don't think we should celebrate just yet.

Thank God some of them have been arrested already, we must stop linking justice to ethnic bias, because when somebody talk of igbo marginalisation, how can states in igbo areas be developed if their governors are siphoning state funds, this problem must be tackled by making some people scapegoats and sending warning signals to others who want to be corrupt. I don't care about those who are arrested, as far as there are evidences against them.

OBJ involvement means another failure.

War against corruption project should only be coordinated by qualified officials; if dirty and corrupt individuals are allowed to be involved like before, the project will once again run into a brick wall.

So far so good, let's keep our fingers cross and hope for the best.

Get this straight they are been arrested for not honoring EFCC'S invitation not for corruption so we still keep our fingers cross as we wait to hear the latest update on the issue.

But you and i know they wont stay there long as you expect sorry.

50 days was not too long a time to compile dossiers on any case.

Nigerian ex-governors are charged

Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye has a month before he steps down
Three Nigerian ex-governors have appeared in court for alleged corruption and money laundering.
Joshua Dariye, who skipped UK bail three years ago, was arrested by the anti-graft agency earlier on Friday.

Saminu Turaki and Orji Kalu were arrested on Wednesday and face similar charges, which all three deny.

The three lost their immunity from prosecution when they stood down after elections in April. Nigeria's governors have considerable powers and budgets.

Mr Dariye is accused of embezzling nearly $9m in public funds during his eight-year reign as governor of central Plateau State.

The former governor had fled the country shortly after he stepped down in May, but returned when he thought the anti-graft agency had stopped looking for him.

Mr Dariye is among several ex-governors the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been investigation on corruption allegations.

On Wednesday, the EFCC arrested two of them and questioned three others, who are also expected to be charged soon, the commission says.

Under Nigerian law, sitting governors have immunity from criminal prosecution.

Honestly my man, I totally missed your point.
Please elaborate a bit for me on this posted comment of yours.

FYI: Being against the way OBJ and Ribadu handled EFCC during OBJ's era is absolutely different from being against EFCC as an organization or being against the arrest of the corrupt governors.

Get it right, my man.
It will be totally senseless for me to be against the arrest of the corrupt governors; all I ask for, is for this organization to be fair, professional and promote perfection during their operations. And this is also the only way they could be effective and efficient.

I guess, you're having trouble making yourself clear, because I truly do not know where you're going with this rubbish.

Yes, it is true, many may be against me or what I stand for; but the truth is that the bright ones clearly know the real fact.
I stand for progressiveness, effectiveness, efficiency, honesty, integrity, fairness, perfection and for the ordinary Nigerian citizens.

That is the fact, my man.

I'm very proud of my state of mind or unique mentality.

Mr McKren, the question is "what do you stand for, if there is anything"
Could it be Kissing ASS? or following others?

I've given you nothing, but love and respect; I hate not to be nice to a lady and I'll like this to stay this way.

Why do you continue to pull my leg like that? Believe me, it's not cool at-all.

NO Bragging , but if you get to know me, you wouldn't have any other choice, but to submit and give me pure love.
Hence, simmer down for a moment and give a brother a break!

@9ja4eva

you mean its not enough for them to get arrested?

Suspects are politely invited for interrogation and they refuse to show up. So you still think that is not enough to get them arrested?

I hope the courts will dispense of this matter speedily; many more corrupt monsters especially in the south south should be brought to justice.

For his own good. Tinubu( the father of all thieves::: wolf in sheeps clothing, traitor: abandoning atiku like that in the last minute all for his own selfish agenda (even though atiku sef na thief)) better stay in London. He probably anticipated the EFCC's moves.

At least both PDP and AC know the kind of person he really is now, he has shown his true colors. Kudos to atiku for resisting the call to abandon his case at the tribunal.  When thieves fight each other, the truth is revealed and they expose themselves. Atiku and Tinubus greed will be lead them to their cells eventually.

Everyone who has looted our country must pay. ITs about time. Up EFCC!!!! (yaradua entered wrongly but should be commended thus far. If he won in a free and fair election i would have no problems with him)

By the way your list is incomplete, they are now 5 that have been arrested: Turaki, Orji Kalu, Nyame, Dariye and they have finally caught Nnamani today (he had supposedly checked into some hospital)

This is really ground breaking news. I hope for the sake of the innocent nigerians who have suffered the evils of these crroks that this is not just a smoke screen.

« #223 on: July 15, 2007, 01:16 AM »

The obstacles that may turn this new development into a smoke screen:

1. OBJ is as corrupt as these folks and he's still hanging around this new administration like a saint sent from heaven.

2. It is clearly obvious and confirmed that unlawfulness and corruption got Yar'Adua the presidential position; sadly, he also admitted to it.

3. Many Corrupt folks are still hiding underneath OBJ's umbrella.

4. Many of the corrupt governors are directly linked to OBJ.

Please be ready, it will be a very long bumpy ride; while I hope for the best, I also predict "Pure Made in Nigeria Drama". Lawyers, judges, senators and more politicians will get richer during this period. At the end of the day, many of these governors will be sent back to their mansions.

I may be wrong, but let's chill and watch what happens.
